James Kreyling, auto shop foreman, avid gardener, devoted family man

James A. Kreyling was equally adept at inspiring respect among the auto mechanices he supervised as he was coaxing a colorful array of vegetables and fruit from a large garden at his home in Wilder.

Mr. Kreyling worked about 30 years for Queen City Chevrolet in Cincinnati, where he was an auto mechanic, shop foreman and service adviser. He worked another 10 years for Campbell County Auto Body in Cold Spring, retiring in 1991.

"He was very easygoing," said Alice Kreyling, his wife of 48 years. "He was a very congenial person, and easy to get along with."

Mr. Kreyling routinely gave relatives and friends food he grew, said his daughter, Peggy A. Lehman of Highland Heights.

"Everybody said he always had a smile on his face, and an open heart," she said.

Mr. Kreyling died Wednesday afternoon at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 68 years old.

Mr. Kreyling was born in Mentor. He liked to hunt, fish and bowl. His garden featured everything from okra to onions. "There was not a vegetable that he did not try his hand at raising," Mrs. Lehman said. "The garden was like his second life to him, after his children."

Alice Kreyling said her husband was proud to be a charter member of Father DeJaco Knights of Columbus Council No. 5220 and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Bishop Flaget.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Kreyling is survived by sons, James J. Kreyling of Smithfield, Va., Thomas A. Kreyling of Cincinnati, Michael B. Kreyling of Wilder, Stephen R.
