Henrietta Bieger, PTA president

Henrietta Elizabeth Bieger had an abiding interest in the education of her sons, no matter where it took her.

Mrs. Bieger, 92, of Covington, died Friday in St. Charles Care Center, Fort Wright.

When her sons were students at St. Benedict Elementary School in Covington, Mrs. Bieger was the president of the Parent-Teacher Association. When they moved on to St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, she became president of the Mothers' Club.

"It made me real proud of her. We came from way over in Covington, and we didn't have money or anything. But she was a leader. She did a good job. There weren't many things she was involved in that she didn't become a leader," said one of Mrs. Bieger's sons, W. G. "Bill" Bieger of Fort Mitchell.

Mrs. Bieger's sons ended up as a physician/attorney, an engineer and an accountant, Bieger noted.

A homemaker and member of St. Benedict Church, his mother remained good friends with the clergy, faculty and other alumni parents at St. Xavier, and was invited back to events over the years, Bieger said.

During World War II, Mrs. Bieger was involved in the formation of a Block Rosary endeavor at St. Benedict to pray for men fighting overseas. The group met in members' homes and remained in existence until just a few years ago, Bill Bieger said.

"The kids went along some times, and she told us, 'We're here to pray, not socialize,' " Bieger said.

Mrs. Bieger and her late husband, R. Cyril Bieger, liked to travel with friends and to garden. His mother also liked to cook, and Christmas cookies were a specialty. "She would hide the cookies but we would find them, and when Christmas came there weren't any cookies," Bieger recalled.

His mother was also a great baseball fan and a very religious person, who attended 6 a.m. Mass at St. Benedict every day. She made many friends throughout her lifetime, through the church, education and her other activities, Bill Bieger said. In her final days at St. Charles many old friends, including former employees of the nursing home, came back to visit her, he said.

Mrs. Bieger's husband, R. Cyril, died in 1984.
