St. James Boy Dies in Italy

Mrs. Meda Mahon Smith of St. James has received word from the War department that her youngest son, Pfc. Ronald W. Mahon, was killed in action in Italy on Feb. 12.
Private Mahon was born at St. James, Oct. 14, 1918. His father, Rollin W. Mahon, is deceased.
Ronald attended school in St. James and graduated from St. Elmo high school in 1937. He worked as a truck driver in the Loudon oilfield before he entered service Feb. 14, 1942. He received his training at Camp Blanding, Fla., and Camp Edwards, Mass.
Private Mahon arrived in Africa April 13, 1943, being among the first men to land in Algeria, and was in his first battle action in the invasion of Salerno About Sept 12. 1943.
He has two brothers in the service, Cpl. Dennis V. Mahan, in an engineers unit, location unknown. and Capt. Herschel D. Mahon, in the army air corps at Biggs Field, Texas.

Roy Mahon
Roy Mahon of Dodge City, Kan., son of the late Mrs. Hattie Mahon of Vandalia, died Tuesday afternoon, August l0, l976 in Trinity Hospital in Dodge City.
He was born in Brownstown and moved to Dodge City in 1941. Mr. Mahon was a retired owner of Mahon Boot Hill Flying Service, Inc. and Mahon Aerial Spraying in Dodge City.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine; son, Roy, Jr. in Garden City, Kan.; daughter, Mary Ann in Lawrence, Kan.; brothers/Jim of Effingham and Percy of Decatur; sister. Bertha Gillespie of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Hulpieu-Swain Funeral Home with burial in Greencrest cemetery in Dodge City.

Virginia R. Miller, 84, of Brownstown died at 7 p.m. Sunday. Jan.22, 1995 in her home.
Services will be held at 11 p.m. Wednesday at Claggett Funeral Home, Brownstown with Kendall Bopp officiating.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Clageett Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Pilcher Cemetery.
Memorials: First Christian Church Brownstown.
Mrs. Miller was born July 3, 1910 in rural Brownstown, daughter of John and Pearl Rine Mahon.
She was a retired teacher in the Brownstown School District and had served as Brownstown Village Clerk for several years. She was a member of First Christian Church of Brownstown and also of the national, Illinois and Fayette County Retired Teachers Association.
She married
Charles Hoy in 1940; he died in 1947.
she married
Leonard Miller in 1960; he died in 1989.
Surviving are her son, Charles Hoy of Kalkaska, Mich.; daughter, Doris and her husband Terry Martin of Hamel; brothers, Hubert Mahon and Jesse Mahon, both of Brownstown; sister, Alda Watts of Branson, Mo., four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

John Mahon, Native of Vandalia, Dies at 92 (1860)
Funeral services for John W. C. Mahon who was a active for many years in boys' work in North St. Louis, were held Thursday, Jan. 28 at John Stygar & Son Funeral Home, 5541 Riverview Boulevard St. Louis.
Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Mahon, 92 years old, died Sunday, Jan. 24 at Missouri Baptist Hospital of a heart ailment.
Born in Vandalia, Ill. he left home as a youth and worked as a cowboy and sheep rancher. His tales of life in the West included an account of serving as a hunting guide for former President Theodore Roosevelt. He married
and made his home in St. Louis since 1889. As a Sunday School teacher at Northwest Christian Church, he organized boys' groups and subseqently became Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 147.
His activities in Scouting included woodsman demonstrations at the annual Scout circus. In 1933 he received the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to boys. Following the death of his wife
10 years ago Mr. Mahon made his home with his sister-in-law and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Voss in St. Louis 3930 Thrush Avenue, St. Louis. He formerly worked in lumber yards in St. Louis, and later operated a vegatable peddler's truck.

Dr. Wilson H. MAHON died this morning in Cooksville.
He was born near Vandalia, son of Jeduhen and Ruth HOOVER MAHON, both deceased, and married
Miss Cecil BEHR.
There were no children from this marriage, but an adopted son, Edwin MAHON, preceded his father in death by 10 years. Besides his wife, he is survived by brothers and sisters: Mrs. Henry HARPSTER of near St. Peter; Mrs. Addie HAROLD of Cleveland, Ohio; George MAHON of Visalia, Cal.; and Eber E. MAHON of Chicago.

RITES FOR MRS. RINE TO BE HELD TODAY
Mrs Harriet Catherine Rine, 76, formerly of Vandalia died at 7:50 p.m.Monday, March 28, in the home of a daughter, Mrs Laura A Paslay, 1246 North Calhoun St. Decatur, following five years of failing health.
Daughter of Culpepper Matheny and Mary Bunyard Matheny, she was born June 12, 1878 and had been a lifelong resident of Fayette county.
She first married
Frank Benefiel Feb. 14, 1896. He preceded her in death April 15, 1929.
Second marriage was with Sam Rine in September 1932. His death occured July 4, 1950.
In addition to Mrs. Paslay, she leaves daughters, Mrs Marybell Roberts of Ramsey, rural route; Mrs Minola Freeman of Canton and Mrs.Pearl Philpot of Vandalia; sons, Herman Benefiel of Brownstown; Ray Benefiel of Castalia, Ohio, and Roy Benefiel of Hammond Ind. There are 22 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren, also sister Sarah A. Jeffers of Roodhouse, and a half sister, Mrs Leona Adams of Oklahoma city.
Mrs Rine was a member of the Pentecostal church in whose house of worship final tributes of respect to her memory will occur at 2 p.m.today, Thursday, March 31, with the pastor, Rev J. H. Reeter, Officiating. Casket bearers will be grandsons. Grandaughters will be incharge of floral tributes.
Burial will be made in McInturff cemetery.

Veda McCormick, 84, Brownstown
Veda C. McCormick, 84, of Brownslown died at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1993. at Fayette County Hospital Long Term Care, Vandalia.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Claggett Funeral Home, Vandalia, with the Rev. Lee Drayton and the Rev. Charlotte Gurtner officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery. Vandalia. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Memorials: First United Methodist Church, Brownstown.
Miss. McCormick was born May 22, 1909. in Brownstown. daughter of Samuel and Bessie Crawford McCormick. She was a retired clerk from Gene's Red Fox in Brownstown and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Brownstown.
Surviving is her sister, Mila McCormick of Brownstown; sister-in-law, Elizabeth McCormick of Vandalia; niece, Julia Smith; great-nieces, Joyce Smith and Patty Claussen; and great-nephews, Joshua Smith and Glenn Hopkins. One brother preceded her in death.

Arthur McMillan dies at 81 in Brownstown
Nov. 22, 1973
Arthur McMillan, age 81 of Brownstown died at 9:50 p.m. Thursday in the Fayette County hospital.
Mr. McMillan was born In Brownstown and married
Frances Womack on Feb. 4. 1946.
He was a member of the Four Mile Christian church near Brownstown.
Surviving are his wife: five sons. Bob of Arthur; Clyde of Keysport; Richard of Bunker Hill: Roy of Decatur; and Paul of St. Elmo; two daughters, Edythe Becker of Morrisonville; Mrs. Audrey Pummlll of LeRoy; two step-daughters, Mrs. Margie Pyle of Vandalia; Mrs. Doris Knotts of Decatur; two brothers, Tom of Vandalia and jesse of Owaneco; one sister, Mrs. Eva Radliff of Vandalia: 35 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday in the Claggett Funeral home In Brownstown with burial in the Pilcher cemetery near Brownstown
