Florence's Joseph Massengale, helped found VFW post, parade

Patriotism and love of country meant a lot to Joseph H. Massengale.

"He was an American, and he was proud to have served his country. He couldn't understood others who didn't," said Mr. Massengale's daughter, Nancy Jo Dallas.

In fact, her father had joined the Army before he was old enough, and when found out, was sent home, Mrs. Dallas said. When he reached the proper age, he joined again, she said.

Mr. Massengale, 76, of Florence, died Saturday night in St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Mr. Massengale served as a paratrooper in World War II, and wounds and injuries suffered during the war largely disabled him throughout the remainder of his life, his daughter said.

The disability didn't stop him from working with other veterans and the families of veterans, in advising them and helping them to acquire pensions and other benefits, Mrs. Dallas said.

Mr. Massengale was a charter member and twice commander of the Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423 in Elsmere. "He spent a lot of time at the post, helping others," said Mrs. Dallas.

"He was a good member and good ol' boy. He belonged to the post for about 52 years," said Ben Sears, the post quartermaster.

Her father was also an organizer and founder of the Erlanger-Elsmere Memorial Day Parade, his daughter said. The parade began nearly 50 years ago, and is an annual event.

Mr. Massengale also worked as a clerk and assistant manager in the hotel and motel industry, including the former Gateway Motel in Covington, Mrs. Dallas said.
