Reese Lloyd, riverboat captain

Even when it unleashed its full fury, the river remained a source of inspiration and tranquility for Reese Lloyd.

"His father had a shoe company in Ripley, Ohio, and it flooded in 1937. My dad was just out of college," said Mr. Lloyd's daughter, Carol Winkler of Fort Thomas.

"He often sat on the riverbank and watched the river. He just loved it and wanted to make it his life."

A riverboat captain for more than 50 years, Mr. Lloyd died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

The Fort Thomas man was 88.

He took a course to become a riverboat captain in the mid-1930s, and he received licenses to navigate the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.

He started working as a captain for the Ohio River Co., then went to Union Barge Co., which later became Union Mechling. His tow boats hauled barges filled with everything from chocolate to grain and livestock.

As a captain, Mr. Lloyd lived on the river for a month, then would be off for a month to spend time with his first wife, Dorothy Lykins, whom he married in 1950. They had one daughter, whom they raised in Fort Thomas.

He retired after about 50 years.

"He's been on the river basically all his life," his daughter said.

"He was a very quiet man, but if you gave him a minute, he loved to tell river stories."

Mr. Lloyd was actively involved with his church, First Presbyterian in Fort Thomas. He also was a long-time member of the Cincinnati Propeller Club, a group of people whose lives all revolved around the river and who kept up on issues involving shipping and towing.

After retirement, Mr. Lloyd enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and playing with his "gadgets," his daughter said.

He also was a loving husband to his second wife, Daisy Lloyd, whom he married in 1994.

"He liked people, he loved gadgets, and he enjoyed his grandkids," Ms. Winkler said. "He was the first one I know who had a remote-controlled TV."
