Falmouth's Edith Woodhead, ran funeral homes, served family, town

Edith Roberts Woodhead, who owned and directed funeral homes in Falmouth and Berry, died Monday at her Falmouth home. She was 84.

Mrs. Woodhead helped run Woodhead Funeral Homes for about 50 years. She and her husband, Joseph, took over the business after his father's death in 1964.

When her husband died in 1966, Mrs. Woodhead was a partner in the business with her son, John Daniel Woodhead of Falmouth.

Mrs. Woodhead brought compassion and understanding to the business, said a daughter, Julia Kaye Lawson of Falmouth. She understood grief, having lost two sons to accidents.

"Mother loved people, and she loved them to be satisfied and as comfortable as they could be in those circumstances," Ms. Lawson said.

"It just seemed like she could relate to whoever, whatever they needed."

Mrs. Woodhead grew up in Harrison County. She and her family moved to Falmouth when she was 9. After graduating from Falmouth High School, she worked as a secretary in the Pendleton County Extension Service office.

In 1937, she married Joseph Woodhead, and began working for his parents' funeral homes. She received her funeral director's license in 1960.

Mrs. Woodhead was chairwoman of the public housing authority in Falmouth for more than 20 years, and she was an active volunteer in the local schools. Each year, she dressed as Santa Claus for trips to area nursing homes.

She was a former member of Falmouth Chapter No. 481 Order of the Eastern Star, and a former president and member of the Falmouth Women's Club. She was a former secretary with the Falmouth PTA, past president of the Democratic Women's Club and a charter member of the Pendleton County Country Club and Downtown Falmouth, Inc.

"She just loved to see our community strive. If there was a need there, and she could do anything about it, she would help," her daughter said.

The church was a rock to Mrs. Woodhead. She served Falmouth United Methodist Church as a trustee and communion steward.

She also was a devoted mother, grandmother, wife and neighbor. She always attended her grandchildren's activities, and she helped neighbors with everything from canning vegetables to treating their illnesses.

"She was a very strong woman, very independent," Ms. Lawson said. "She got her strength from the Lord. Her church was very important to her, and her religion was, too."

On March 10, the Falmouth City Council officially recognized Mrs. Woodhead for her many years of public service and care.

"There wasn't too much that Mother wouldn't do," Ms. Lawson said. "She was a woman who cared."

In addition to her daughter and son, other survivors include sisters, Lola B. Courtney of Carrollton and Juanita Craig of Falmouth; four granddaughters; and six great-grandsons.
