Piner's Lendon Hicks, mechanic, church trustee, loving family man

Lendon Hicks supported himself and his family in a variety of ways, including as a mechanic, service-station owner, pest exterminator and manager of an automobile body shop.

He balanced his work with a devotion to his family and church, Demossville Baptist, where he was a trustee.

"He loved his kids and his wife, and he loved the Lord," said a son, Daril Hicks of Alexandria.

Mr. Hicks died Monday at his Piner home. He was 63.

He was born in Jackson, Ky., and moved to the Piner area as a young child. He went to school in Pendleton County.

He married his wife, Wilma Hicks, in 1962. His children were raised mostly in the Piner area, although he also moved the family to Texas and Florida because he just "liked to go," his son said.

"Dad was a free spirit," he said. "He found jobs wherever we moved."

In the mid-1950s, Mr. Hicks purchased a service station in Norwood, Ohio, which he owned until 1972. He also managed an auto-body shop in Norwood.

One of his favorite pastimes was drag racing. He owned his own cars, including a yellow Mustang and a newer, 27-foot-long car, both of which he named "Quarter Horse." A driver raced the cars on tracks around Kentucky and Ohio.

Singing for the church, leading revivals and playing the guitar were among Mr. Hicks' other interests.
