Herschel Pratt, served others

Herschel Pratt of Newport was always helping others - family members, friends, even perfect strangers.

'He just had a real servant heart,' said one of his sons, Thom Pratt of Cincinnati. 'He just consistently ministered to others.'

Mr. Pratt, 64, a U.S. Air Force veteran, died Monday at his home. He was a retired service manager with Campbell County Chevrolet, Newport.

Mr. Pratt was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Newport, where he served as chairman of the board of trustees and the deacon board and superintendent of the Sunday school. He was a volunteer with Christian Counseling Association and Fairhaven Rescue Mission, Covington. He also was a member of the Northern Kentucky Baptist Association.

'He put God and his Christian faith in front of everything he did,' his son said. 'He encouraged others to get involved in community and in church.'

Mr. Pratt loved golf and was a University of Kentucky basketball fan. He was a proud father who adored his grandchildren.

'He was just a wonderful man,' Thom Pratt said. 'We were very blessed to have him as a father.'

Other survivors include his wife, Mary Pratt; a daughter, Tracey Iles of Newport; a son, Gregory Pratt of Fort Thomas; sisters, Elizabeth Dunn of Amherst, Ohio, and Maxine Walker of Newport; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be in Johns Hill Cemetery, Highland Heights.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Baptist Church Building Together for Christ Fund, 510 Park Ave., Newport, Ky. 41071. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Betty J. Adams, 69, of Williamstown, died at 2:13 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.

Jerry Bittner, 70, of Newport, died at 5:25 a.m. Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was an engraver with AK Steel, a Campbell County deputy sheriff and a charter member of the Saddle Club. Mr. Bittner served as president of the Saddle Club for seven consecutive terms and was a champion western rider. He was a member of the Riverside 4 Yacht Club.

Survivors include daughters, Susan Muench of Morning View and Carol Bittner of Fort Wright; brothers, Raymond Bittner of Florence, Howard Bittner of Southgate, Leo Bittner of Alexandria, Thomas Bittner of Cincinnati and James Bittner of Newport; and one granddaughter.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Mausoleum, Fort Thomas.

Mary Elizabeth Nickerson Estep, 96, of Mount Olivet, died Sunday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Clarence Estep; a son, Bernie Estep; and daughters, Dorothy Estep, Edna Louise Daniel and Mary Lucy Pollard, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Harley Estep and Clarence 'Lucky' Estep, both of Robertson County; a daughter, Temple Hesler of Maysville; 23 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mount Olivet. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Belmont Cemetery, Bracken County.

Joseph Frances Flynn, 80, of Fort Wright, died at 2:04 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was owner of Flynn Sunoco in Fort Mitchell and a board member of the Northern Kentucky Vocational School. He also was a member of Fort Wright Civic Club and the Kentucky Gasoline Dealers Association. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Hazel Flynn, died in 1995.

Survivors include daughters, Sister Mary Jolene Flynn, S.N.D., of Park Hills, Landra Szekeres of Burlington and Beth Ulrich of Somerset; a sister, Margaret Kessler of Owenton; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Entomb ment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011; or American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042. Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.

Arietta Britton Hall, 87, of Covington, died at 2:05 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Highland Avenue Wesleyan Church, Covington. Her husband, Ernest Leonard Hall, died in 1989.

Survivors include a son, Donald E. Hall of Independence; daughters, Zelma Allen of Covington and Arneta Biddle of Fort Wright; a brother, Keith Britton of Williamsburg; three grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Avenue Wesleyan Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Highland Avenue Wesleyan Church, 729 Highland Ave., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Edward Mitchell Hall, 75, formerly of Ludlow, died Thursday at the Drake Center in Cincinnati. He was a retired factory worker and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Sheila West of Demossville; sons, Larry Hall, Jerry Hall and Dale Hall, all of Ludlow, and Mitchell Hall of Erlanger; and several grandchildren.

No services are planned. Mr. Hall donated his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Stephen Wayne Hildreth, 30, of Cincinnati, died Saturday in a dirt bike accident in Boone County. He was a construction worker with PDQ Pole Buildings, Cincinnati.

Survivors include sons, Jacob Hildreth, Justin Hildreth and Alexander Hildreth, all of Cincinnati; his mother and stepfather, Serena and Gene Craig of Falmouth; brothers, Shane Nichelson of Belleview and Billy Nichelson of Glencoe; and stepbrothers, Delbert Craig and Jason Craig, both of Falmouth.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Kathryn M. Kaeff, 79, of Bellevue, died Sunday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Randy Grosch of Highland Heights; a stepson, Nicholas Kaeff of Covington; sisters, Betty Bauer and Georgia Weber, both of Newport; and a brother, Charles Gossett of Fort Thomas.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Lung Association, 11113 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.

Edward Anthony Landwehr Jr., 53, of Burlington, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a sales clerk with Lowe's and a former assistant manager with Hebron Hardware.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy J. Landwehr; daughters, Michelle Landwehr of Burlington and Debra Landwehr of Hebron; a son, Edward A. Landwehr of Hebron; his father, Ed ward J. Landwehr of Edgewood; brothers, Paul J. Landwehr of Fort Wright and Tom Landwehr of Villa Hills; sisters, Julia Frey of Cedar Grove, Ind., Judy Eilers of Beavercreek, Ohio, Susan Bailey of Summerville, S.C., and Patty Landwehr of Wilder; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Burlington. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, is handling arrangements.

Anna Jean Lyons, 73, of Berry, died Sunday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. She as a retired teacher and member of Harrison County Retired Teachers, United Methodist Women and Benson United Methodist Church in Cynthiana.

Survivors include her stepmother, Mavis Lyons of Georgetown; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Benson United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Memorials are suggested to Benson United Methodist Church, Cynthiana, Ky. 41031; or Benson Cemetery, Cynthiana, Ky. 41031. Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry, is handling arrangements.

Birdie L. Meiners, 79, of Florence, died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired waitress with Olsner and Caintuckee Restaurant, Florence. Her husband, Clifford W. Meiners, died in 1990.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Meiners of Paris; a brother, Walter Napier of Elsmere; and a sister, Linda Moore of Elsmere.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Geneva Midgett, 73, of Florence, died at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons, Robert Midgett of Florence, David Midgett of Covington and Thom as Midgett of Latonia; daughters, Sharon Horton of Florence and Janice Leffer of Independence; a sister, Stella Hephenstine of Flemingsburg; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Flossie B. Robertson, 96, of Newport, died at 4:20 p.m. Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker, a former factory worker with Selby Shoe Factory and Williams Shoe Factory, both in Portsmouth, Ohio, and a member of Women's Auxiliary of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662, Newport. Her husband, James Harold Robertson, died in 1972.

Survivors include a son, Eugene Robertson of Milwaukee; one granddaughter, six great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at noon Wednesday at Arlington Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011; or American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042. Henrietta 'Ann' B. Simon, 72, of Wichita, Kan., died at 2:39 p.m. Saturday at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She was a retired nurse and was formerly known as Sister Luke of the St. Benedict Order.

Survivors include sisters, Flo Goetz of Newport and Loretta Flesch of Edgewood; and a brother, Roy Simpson of Hamilton, Ohio.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Corpus Christi Church, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Madonna Manor, 2344 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills, Ky. 41017. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Fred A. 'Ted' Ulrich, 82, of Covington, died at 3:06 a.m. Monday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired inspector with Cincinnati Milacron, a member of St. John Church in Covington and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include sons, David Ulrich of Fairfield, Ohio, and Kenneth Ulrich of Covington; daughters, Marilyn S. Stephens of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Elaine J. Feldhaus of Cincinnati and Jan K. Power of Kendall Park, N.J.: a sister, Rose Bellinger of Lake, Mich.; a brother, Joseph Ulrich of Millington, Mich.; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Charles R. Whitten, 82, of Latonia, died at 6:05 p.m. Sunday at Deupree Community nursing home in Cincinnati. He was a retired baker. His wife, Florine Case Whitten, died in 1984.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Waters of Jacksonville, Ill.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Deupree Community, 4001 Rosslyn Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45209.
