Eugene Bowling, owned Bowling's Enterprises

Eugene R. Bowling spent a good portion of his life learning how to rebuild generators, alternators and starters.

And it wasn't just cars that Mr. Bowling could repair. He also fixed tractors, boats and just about anything that had a motor, said his wife of 50 years, Rose H. Carney Bowling.

"One of his clients told him, 'Treat people well, and you will be a success.' He lived by that," she said. "He was always gentle, especially with older people."

Mr. Bowling, 71, of Fort Mitchell, died at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

He was the retired owner of Bowling's Enterprises in Fort Wright, a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Bowling grew up in Independence and dreamed of owning his own business. He worked for a generator company in Covington after World War II and saved money while he learned his craft.

He opened Bowling's Enterprises in the 1960s. His son, James M. Bowling of Fort Mitchell, now runs the business.

Mrs. Bowling said their children had inherited their father's patience and kindness when dealing with people.

"We have two wonderful children, and they are like him," Mrs. Bowling said. "My husband had many, many friends."

Other survivors include a daughter, Beverly A. Zurborg of Independence; a brother, James E. Bowling of Taylor Mill; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial was this morning at Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to American Lung Association, 11113 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242; or in the form of Masses. Connley Bros. Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Glenn Edward Ball, 63, of Cincinnati, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at his home. He was a retired boiler engineer with the Carew Tower building in Cincinnati.

Survivors include sons, Donald Ball of Fort Thomas, John Baker and Ronald Ball, both of Cincinnati; a daughter, Sandy Lester of Highpoint, N.C.; a brother, Frank Ball of Richlands, Va.; sisters, Dorothy Lester of Doran, Va., Ruby Davis of Richlands, Va., and Geraldine Maglolthine of Red Ash, Va.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Hobart "Hobe" J. Ball, 66, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at his home. He was a former sales manager with Western Auto Association, Falmouth, and a member of Falmouth Methodist Church. He was quartermaster of the Falmouth VFW Post and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Martie Ball; sons, Jeff Ball of Lexington and Mike Ball of Butler; daughters, Robyn Gilbert of Falmouth and Katie Manning of Paris; brothers, Richard Ball of Freemont, Calif., and William Ball of Yakima, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to Falmouth VFW, in care of Clay Clifford, 600 W. Shelby St., Falmouth, Ky. 41040.

Joseph Carl, 87, of Villa Hills, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow.

William L. Griffin, 83, of Latonia, died April 22 at Salem Park Care Center, Cincinnati. He was a retired mechanic with Ford Motor Co. in Cincinnati and a member of Golden Rule Lodge No. 345 and Indra Consistory, both in Covington. He was a World War II veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Dicey Manning Griffin; a son, William Griffin Jr. of Covington; daughters, Patricia Yelton of Franklin, Ohio, Darlene Boldt of Cincinnati and Ruth Lee Brockman of Covington; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., Suite 102, West Chester, Ohio 45069.

Betty M. Kruse Gross, 40, of Dayton, died at 3:26 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a disabled truck driver with Celadon Trucking Co., Indianapolis, and a member of New Christian Hope Center, Newport.

Survivors include her husband, Grover W. Gross; a son, Carl Kruse of Newport; a daughter, Angie Kruse of Newport; her mother, Betty Mae Kruse of Newport; brothers, Charles Kruse of Newport, John Kruse of Florida, Richard Kruse of Grant County, Joseph Kruse of Covington and William Kruse of Norwood, Ohio; sisters, Deborah Patridge and Katherine Paynor, both of Covington, and Aloah Hamilton of Louisville; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.

David Lee Johnson, 22, of Burnside, formerly of Owenton, died Sunday in Burnside. He was a carpenter.

Survivors include a son, Dakota Johnson of Burnside; and his mother, Linda Johnson of California.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Rogers Funeral Home, Owenton. Burial will be in Mussell Shoals Cemetery, Owen County.

William Thompson Kelsch, 51, of Augusta, died Tuesday at his home. He was a retired employee of CSX Railroad and a former restaurant owner. He was a former Augusta city councilman, a member of the Augusta Board of Education and a member of VFW Post No. 9535, Augusta.

Survivors include sons, Robert William Kelsch II and Patrick Thompson Kelsch, both of Augusta; a daughter, Marlene Kelsch Barrett of Augusta; a stepdaughter, Brenda Hancock of Covington; a brother, Robert Hudson Kelsch of Augusta; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Augustine Church, Augusta. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Augusta. Memorials are suggested to Augusta Independent Schools Scholarship Fund, Augusta, Ky. 41002.

Dorothy Hinton Lewis, 89, of Sardis, died at 5:43 a.m. Wednesday at Maysville Extended Care Center. She was a member of Sardis Assembly of God Church, where she was the Sunday school superintendent, and was a member of Mount Olivet Senior Citizens. Her husband, John D. Lewis, died in 1995. Sons Charles Lewis and Herman Lewis preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Dewey Lewis of Sardis; daughters, Fidella Tuel and Callie Maynard, both of Ripley, Ohio, Bercha Thacker of Felicity, Ohio, and Louann Harber of Maysville; sisters, Alin Gulley of Flemingsburg, Lorene Goodwin of Fleming County and Goldie Newsome of Maysville; brothers, Ford Hinton of Fleming Co. and Ivan Hinton of Roanoke, Va.; 23 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Morehead. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick.

Rosa K. Lowry, 86, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at Franciscan Hospital Western Hills, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Othella McHugh, 84, of Crestview Hills, died at 4:41 p.m. Tuesday at Manor Care Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a retired rate clerk with CNA Insurance and a member of St. Mary Ladies Society and the senior citizens group at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. Joseph New Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Leo Gerald Murnane, 67, of Columbus, Ohio, died Wednesday at Manor Care Nursing Home, Westerville, Ohio. He was a former employee of the State of Ohio Public Works Department, a real estate agent, a member of St. Elizabeth Church, Columbus, and an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret Murnane; sons, Mathew Murnane of Edgewood, and Stephen Murnane and Kevin Murnane, both of Columbus; a sister, Mary Frances Vogel; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. James the Less Church, Columbus. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Long Funeral Home, Columbus. Memorials are suggested to Knights of Columbus, 4611 Glenmawr Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43224.

Helen Klug Porter, 93, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center, Fort Wright. She was a saleswoman with J. C. Penney Co. Her husband, Harold Porter, died in 1965.

Survivors include a sister, Lorraine Drummey of Fort Wright; and a brother, Eugene Klug of the state of California.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Charles Care Center. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Cincinnati. Middendorf- Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.

Janice L. Smith, 62, of Crestview, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a maintenance worker with the Newport Board of Education.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Catherine Black of Silver Grove; a son, Ronald Smith of Erlanger; a sister, Juanita Steinhauer of Silver Grove; her fiancee, Jack Tate of Fort Thomas; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
