Gene Daly, Covington firefighter, jailer

After Gene Daly retired as a firefighter with the Covington Fire Department in 1986, he took a job as deputy jailer for Kenton County. But even then, when a big fire broke out in the city, the Covington man could be found at the scene, eager to lend his help.

'Even after he was retired, I know a couple of times when they had a big fire, he'd be right down there with them,' said Mr. Daly's wife, Pauline Daly.

'He'd do anything he could to help.'

Mr. Daly, a 20-year veteran of the fire department, died at 8:35 a.m. Monday at his home. He was 64.

The Holmes High School graduate was working at an automobile manufacturing plant in Norwood, helping support his first wife and five children, when a friend who was a firefighter encouraged him to take a job at the Covington fire department.

He loved the work, Mrs. Daly said. At the time, he also worked part-time at Lazarus, loading and unloading merchandise.

After his children were grown, he met his second wife, Pauline Daly, whom he married in 1985. He retired from the fire department about a year later.

He soon found a job as a deputy jailer.

He worked for about seven more years, and retired from the jail two years ago. After that, he enjoyed spending his free time hunting, fishing, and being with his friends and family.

'He was a very active guy,' Mrs. Daly said. 'He liked people, he liked to go out, hunting, fishing - fishing, mostly, was his love.'

'He had a lot of friends who he met through work, school and throughout his life.'

Mr. Daly was an Army veteran. He also was a member of Covington Moose Lodge No. 1469.

Other survivors include sons, Mike Daly of Walton, Steve Daly, Dave Daly and Dale Daly, all of Covington; a daughter, Tricia Winterman of Independence; a sister, Donna DeMoss of Covington; stepsons, Barry Parnell and Troy Parnell, both of Covington; stepdaughters, Andrea Staggs of Independence, Toni Martin of California and Paula Parnell of Covington; eight grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, with Covington Moose Lodge services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Lyman V. Ginger, leader in education, UK dean

LEXINGTON - Lyman V. Ginger, a former state education superintendent and one of Kentucky's most distinguished educational leaders, has died. He was 91.

Ginger, who also served as dean of the University of Kentucky College of Education and president of the National Education Association, died Monday night at Hospice Care Center in Lexington. He had undergone colon surgery several weeks ago.

'I don't think there's been a finer public servant in Kentucky than Dr. Lyman Ginger,' said former Lexington Mayor and Congressman Scotty Baesler, whom Ginger worked for as an aide when Baesler was mayor. 'He had a great career that's a notch above everybody else that I know. Above all, he was a fine human being.'

Ginger was state education superintendent from 1972 to 1976. He was UK education dean from 1956 to 1966. In 1957, he became the first Kentuckian to be elected president of the National Education Association.

Ginger also served as president of the Kentucky Education Association in the 1950s.

In the 1980s, Ginger served on the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council and the Fayette County school board.

Ginger is survived by twin sons, Leslie Thomas Ginger of Frankfort and William Wesley Ginger of Lexington; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

William L. Bradford, 71, of Lexington, formerly of Butler, died Monday at his home. He founded three Lexington businesses, Thermal Equipment Sales, Thermal Balance and MBH Equipment Sales and was a consultant with Preferred Balance Co. in Lexington. He was the first president of the Central Kentucky Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers and was a founding member of the Midwest Agents Council.

Mr. Bradford was a member of the Searcher Sunday School Class at Southland Christian Church in Lexington. He was a member of the church board of elders. The church recently awarded him its first ever commendation for exemplary service.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Bowen Bradford; sons, Jeffrey Bradford and Scott Bradford, both of Lexington; a daughter, Sheila Staggs of Lexington; a brother, John M. Bradford; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Southland Christian Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at W. R. Milward Funeral Home Southland, Lexington. Burial will be in Lexington Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Southland Christian Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 23338, Lexington, Ky. 40523.

Lillian Sue Hobday Cahill, 64, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Jack Daly, 85, of Covington, died Monday at his home. He was a retired switchman with the L&N Railroad. His wife, Mabel Sally Smith Daly, died in 1992.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth L. Daly of Covington; a daughter, Wanda J. Daly of Covington; a sister, Francis Murphy of Lancaster; brothers, Sam Daly of Lancaster and Jim Daly of Cynthiana; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 6 to 10 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011.

Susan L. Dean, 92, of Dayton, died Tuesday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. She was a retired nurse's aide with Speers Hospital, Dayton, and a member of Bellevue Baptist Church. Her husband, Jesse B. Dean, died in 1984. A daughter, Josephine Burchett, died in 1994. A son, Ronnie Lee Dean, died in 1949.

Survivors include daughters, Lillie May Potter of Naples, Fla., and Margaret Price of Pendleton County; sons, Jesse Dean Jr. of Falmouth, Alfred Dean of Bethel, Ohio, Frank Dean of Tampa, Fla., Paul Dean of Ruskin, Fla., and Herman Dean and John Henry Dean, both of Dayton; 38 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Charles Eades, 50, of Ludlow, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a self-employed cab driver.

Survivors include his parents, John and Etta Merrell of Ludlow; a son, Mark Merrell of Newport; a daughter, Barbara Rayschulte of Covington; a brother, Doug Merrell of Elsmere; and one grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m.

Thursday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the Charles Eades Memorial Trust Fund, in care of Home Savings Building, 202 Elm St., Ludlow, Ky. 41016.

Ruth Butler Gibson, 87, of Walton, died at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday at friend's home in Walton. She was a former hairdresser and owner of Butler Beauty Shop, Covington, and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Covington. Her husband, Atwood Gibson, died in 1993.

Survivors include a son, Robert Gibson of Walton; a daughter, Carol Brown of Walton; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Benny Horn, 76, of Leitchfield, died Monday in Leitchfield.

Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden.

Carlos Veldon 'C. V.' Joyce, 88, of Cynthiana, died Monday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. He was a retired employee of the L&N Railroad.

Survivors include his wife, Doshie Mary Andrews Joyce; a daughter, Lois Pardon of Cynthiana; a son, Don Joyce of Bloomington, Ill.; a sister, Sylvia Sherrill of Fredonia; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Melton Funeral Home, Providence. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday. Burial will be in Shady Grove Cemetery. Forest C. Kindoll, 83, of Sanders, died Monday at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind. He was a retired farmer and a member of Cove Hill Baptist Church in Carrollton. He was a deacon and a Sunday school teacher at the church.

Survivors include his wife, Alene Darnold Kindoll; sons, Joe Kindoll of Sanders and Robert Kindoll of Carrollton; a brother, Mervin Kindoll of Carrollton; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton. Helen Knox, 87, of Florence, died Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Immanuel Methodist Church, Lakeside Park. Her husband, Ralph W. Knox, died in 1992.

Survivors include a son, Ralph E. Knox of Cincinnati; a brother, Ralph Smith of Norfolk, Va.; and a sister, Margaret Bolling of Cincinnati.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Entombment will be in Highland Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Charles Robert Maxwell Sr., 70, of Richwood, died Sunday in Appomattox, Va. He was a retired carpenter and an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Roseann Clark Maxwell; daughters, Patricia Maxwell of Erlanger, Katherine Canfield of Florence and Amy Sloan of Covington; sons, Charles Robert Maxwell Jr. of Florence and Robby Maxwell of Richwood; a brother, James O. Maxwell of Burlington; sisters, Juanita Scudder of Florence and Elizabeth 'Betty' Noell of Walton; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Robinson Funeral Home, Appomattox. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery, Appomattox. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling local arrangements.

Janice Riley, 60, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Sadie W. Scott, 93, of Butler, died Monday at Mount Washington Care Center, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Timothy Episcopal Church, Cincinnati. Her husband, Clare B. Scott, died in 1987.

Survivors include a son, Allan Scott of Butler; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John Episcopal Church, East Hartford. Burial will be in East Hartford Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home, Butler, is handling arrangements.

Bertie Delores Coombs Smith, 87, of Carrollton, died Tuesday at Masonic Home Infirmary, Shelbyville. She was a retired sales clerk and manager of the Bea-Leah Dress Shop and Bryant's Dress Shop in Carrollton, and a member of Carrollton Christian Church. Her husband, John Beckham Smith, died in 1964.

Survivors include nieces, Marilyn Lamb of Fisherville, Janet Essig of Louisville and Carol Elliott of Loveland, Ohio.

Services were this morning at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.

Chase Smith, 1 week, of Fort Mitchell, died at 1:10 p.m. Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his parents, Travis and Christine Smith of Fort Mitchell; a brother, Cody Smith of Fort Mitchell; a sister, Caytlyn Smith of Fort Mitchell; grandparents, Robert and Sharon Steinfort of Crescent Springs; and a great-grandmother, Katie Kitchen of Bellevue.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.

Raymond 'Jack' Smith, 81, of Falmouth, died at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday at his residence.

Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Ritsel Sparks, 32, of Florence, died at 6:58 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Judith Marie Carr Stegner, 58, of Covington, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a clerk with Dubois Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include a son, Barry S. Stegner of Hebron; a brother, James R. Carr of Norcass, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Walton Cemetery. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Juanita Case Weaver, 72, of Maysville, died Tuesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. She was a machine operator with Brownings Division of Emerson Electric, Maysville, and a member of Calvary Temple in Maysville. A son, Phillip 'Bear' Howard Weaver, died in 1995.

Survivors include a daughter, Laura Turner of Carlisle; a son, Gene Weaver of Maysville; brothers, Ferdinand Case of Waverly, Ohio, and Omar Case of Maysville; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Brell & Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.

Margie A. Souther Wolnitzek, 98, of Cincinnati, formerly of Latonia and Boone County, died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at Meadowbrook Care Center in Cincinnati. She was a retired candy department supervisor with Kroger Co. Manufacturing Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Latonia Christian Church.

Survivors include daughters, Jeananne W. Goldberg of Cincinnati and Ruth Manchester of Lake Port, Calif.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Mary Gay Wright, 43, of Alexandria, died at 2:30 a.m. Monday in an auto accident in Alexandria. She was a nurse and a homemaker. Her mother, Katherine Toner Kuntz, died in 1997.

Survivors include her husband, Randy Wright; daughters, Sarah Jenkins and Katie Jenkins, both at home; a son, Joey Jenkins of Alexandria; her father, Earl A. Kuntz of Crestview; sisters, Karen Markus and Shady Orth, both of Alexandria; brothers, Bob Kuntz of Independence, Tony Kuntz and Mark Kuntz, both of Alexandria; and one granddaughter.

Wilma L. Wright, 71, of Covington, died at 6:01 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a retired waitress with Mayers Restaurant, Cincinnati.

Survivors include daughters, Virginia Cook of Cincinnati and Rose Couch of Elsmere; sons, Harold Wright of Fayetteville, Ohio, and Wayne Wright of Covington; stepdaughters, Aline Chambers of Mason, Ohio, Doris James of Winston, Ore., and Carolyn Grass of El Paso, Texas; a stepson, Norman Pittinger of El Paso; a sister, Wanda Rodgers of Cincinnati; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Grovelawn Cemetery, Pendleton, Ind.

Stella M. Howard Wurth, 78, of Taylor Mill, died at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday at her home. She retired as an assistant vice president of the loan department at Old Peoples Liberty Bank and Trust Co. in Covington after 45 years of service, and was a mem-

ber of the National Association of Banking Women.

Survivors include a son, Daniel Wurth; a daughter, Debbie Behle of Taylor Mill; a brother, Richard G. Howard of Taylor Mill; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Roy Wynn, 66, of Elgin, Ill., formerly of Ludlow, died Sunday at Maplewood Care Nursing Home in Elgin. He was a retired employee of Illinois Tool Works, Shakeproof Division in Elgin, a youth football coach and an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include sons, David Wynn of Glendale, Wis., Robert Wynn of Hampshire, Ill., Richard Wynn of Bartlett, Ill., and Brian Wynn of Bakersfield, Calif.; brothers, Clifford Wynn and William Wynn, both of Ludlow; and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ the Lord Lutheran Church, Elgin. Memorials are suggested to Christ the Lord Lutheran Church, 12N462 Tina Trail, Elgin, Ill. 60123; or the Albert J. Simon Cardiac Care Unit, 934 Center St., Elgin, Ill. 60120.
