Catherine Alig: Volunteering became her life in later years

Catherine Alig raised a family, helped out in her husband's butcher and grocery stores, and worked as a clerk in a dairy.

After she retired and her husband, Arthur Alig, died in 1976, Mrs. Alig decided to find another way to be involved.

She was in her 60s when she began volunteering as a receptionist at Ludlow Senior Citizens - service she did until about six months ago.

'She helped pack up the Meals on Wheels there for the people in Ludlow,' said her daughter, Charleen Fangman of Park Hills.

'After my dad died, she got involved in that. It was almost her life.

'I think she liked being with people and all the activity.'

Mrs. Alig, formerly of Ludlow, died Friday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington. She was 83 years old.

Mrs. Alig lived most of her life in Ludlow. She was a homemaker and helped her husband at his butcher store in Bromley and then his butcher and grocery store in Ludlow.

She retired as a clerk at Feldman's Dairy in Ludlow.

Mrs. Alig was a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church in Ludlow, where she also was a member of the Ladies Altar Society. She also belonged to the Bromley Veterans Auxiliary.

Mrs. Alig's family members can't help smiling as they remember how much she loved playing cards and bingo.

Even at the end, when she could not talk or eat, sons Richard Alig of Hebron and Michael Alig of Park Hills were able to coax her into a game.

One would get her attention by loudly shuffling a deck of cards, and the other would hold her cards for her while she pointed instructions.

Mrs. Alig had 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sts. Boniface and James Church in Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home in Ludlow.
