Covington's Bruce Brownfield, church elder

E. Bruce Brownfield, a life-long member of Madison Avenue Christian Church in Covington, considered his active involvement in the church his way of serving God and his community.

He was a church elder, past chairman of the general board, trustee and Sunday school teacher.

'His grandma started taking him to the church when he was a little boy,' said his wife, Debbie Brownfield. 'He spent his life serving others and serving God.'

Mr. Brownfield, of Crestview Hills, died at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 65.

He grew up in Covington and graduated from Holmes High School in 1951. He then served in the Navy during the Korean War.

Upon his return from the war, Mr. Brownfield worked at his stepfather's auto-body shop. He became co-owner of Walther Auto Body Service in Covington after his stepfather died, and operated it for 45 years.

Mr. Brownfield had three sons by a previous marriage. He married his wife, Debbie, in 1997.

He was previously involved with the Northern Kentucky Swim League. He also was a member of Independent Garage Owners and Auto Service Consultants groups.

Other survivors include sons, Bradley Dale Brownfield of Fort Worth, Texas, and David Bruce Brownfield and Douglas Allen Brownfield, both of Erlanger; stepsons, Joe Douglas and Nick Douglas, both of Crestview Hills; a stepdaughter, Becky Douglas of Crestview Hills; six grandchildren and two step-grandsons.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Madison Avenue Christian Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the church. Cremation will be at Cincinnati Cremation Co. Memorials are suggested to Madison Avenue Christian Church Book of Rememberance, 1530 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, is handling arrangements.

Maxima Regaspi Abuan, 81, of Dayton, died Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Felicidad Andrews of Dayton; sons, Federico Abuan, Cipriano Abuan and Alfredo Abuan, all of the Philippines, and Jaime Abuan of Bellevue; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services and visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Cincinnati.

Cremation will be at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home and Crematory, Cincinnati.

Herbert R. 'Tag' Beach, 80, of Florence, died of cancer at 5:43 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired welder and machine operator with Metalcraft Co., Boone County, a member of Greenview Baptist Church in Florence, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Cimino Beach; sons, Donald L. Beach of Warsaw, Herb R. Beach Jr. and Larry D. Beach, both of Florence, and Darl H. Beach of Independence; daughters, Shirley Blanton and Jo Ann Luster, both of Florence, and Judy Hager of Crittenden; 12 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Vine Run Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042; or Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Richard D. Benken, 59, of Newport, died Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a binder with Wendling Printing Co., Newport, and a member of the Campbell County Game and Fish Association.

Survivors include his mother, Matilda Benken of Covington; and a sister, Kathy Barrett of Cold Spring.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Campbell Lodge Boys Home, 150 Skyline Drive, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076; or American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45069.

Wanda Fern Winkle Blaine, 60, of Crittenden, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a head cook with Newport High School and a member of St. William Church, Williamstown.

Sons, Jimmy Winkle and Bean Winkle, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, James Ralph Blaine; a son, Lindsey Winkle Jr. of Newport; a daughter, Roseline Winkle of West Palm Beach, Fla.; sisters, Ollie Cole of Cincinnati, Edna V. J. Crail of Cold Spring, Bertha Taylor and Katherine Senders, both of Covington; brothers, George Baughan of Newport, James Baughan of Bellevue and Bert Baughan of Crittenden; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Harrison County. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Helen Calsbeck, 70, of Dayton, died Sunday at her home. She was an assembler with the Wadsworth Watch Co. in Dayton, and a member of Dayton Eagles.

Survivors include sons, Bruce Calsbeck of Dry Ridge and Fred Calsbeck of Clearwater, Fla.; daughters, Carmen Davis and Lucy Shears, both of Dayton, Wanda Feiler of Dry Ridge, Constance Haggard of Clearwater, Fla., and Beale, Calif.; a brother, Sam Carr of Augusta; a sister, Juanita Dunaway of Dayton; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

James Edward Carvolth, 55, of Fort Thomas, died at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a self-employed real estate investor, a member of Real Estate Investors Association, and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Fort Thomas.

Survivors include his mother, Marion Carvolth of Fort Thomas.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Evergreen Mausoleum, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke Hospital East, 85 N. Elmer Clifton, 58, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown.

Stella Mae Collinsworth, 79, of Harlan, died Monday at Harlan Hospital.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at IOOF Cemetery, Corinth. Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth, is handling arrangements.

Myrtle Damron, 70, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at her home. Arrangements are pending at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.

Bobby Daugherty, 53, of Independence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a salesman with Marshall Dodge, Covington, and the former owner of Plaza Auto Sales in Latonia.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Daugherty; sons, Christopher Daugherty and Robert Daugherty, both of Independence; daughters, Traci Daugherty of Independence and Denise Roth of Hebron; his mother, Glenna Turner of Taylor Mill; stepbrothers, Ed Howard of Florence, William Robinson of Independence, Tommy Howard, John Turner and Roger Turner, all of Latonia; stepsisters, Faye Ard of Latonia, Rhonda Bialik of Unon, Janet Denny of Covington, Pat Landsiedle of Dayton, Ohio, Karen Howell of Taylor Mill and Alice Stacey of Erlanger; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. John Detzel, 86, of Bellevue, died Tuesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. Arrangements are pending at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue.

Charles Fredrick Frank Jr., 77, of Cincinnati, died Sunday at Jewish Hospital Kenwood in Cincinnati. He was a retired dispatcher with Pharo Trucking Co., and a member of Bellevue Vets and Disabled American Veterans. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

His wife, Betty Mae Frank, died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, David Charles Frank of Fort Thomas; daughters, Beverly Ann Frank of Cedar Grove, Ind., Linda Mills of Newport and Donna Jean Yates of Bellevue; a brother, Jack Frank of Lake City, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Friday.

Hal Harlow, 77, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.

Myra Hendrickson, 70, of Independence, died at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.

Sheila May Hon, 42, of Elliston, died at 3:30 p.m. Monday at her home after suffering a seizure.

Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Rose Hon, at home; her stepfather, Lowell Kendall of Dry Ridge; brothers, Charles Hon of Independence, Ronnie Hon of Newport, Emmett Wayne Hon, Danny Lee Hon and Tony Hon, all of Sparta.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.

Brigette J. Hyden, 52, of Independence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Everett R. Hyden; sons, Marcus E. Hyden and Thomas R. Hyden, both of Independence; daughters, Verena M. Hyden of Erlanger and Maria T. Ascher of Independence; her father, Joseph Ascher of Bavaria, Germany; brothers, Gerhardt Ascher and Manfred Ascher, both of Bavaria; and a sister, Heidi Ascher of Bavaria.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials: to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Leonard Shelton Jefferson Sr., 92, of Germantown, died Monday at his home. He was a farmer and a member of Germantown Baptist Church. His first wife, Louise Robinson Jefferson, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Earleen McCarthy Jefferson; sons, Leonard Shelton Jefferson Jr. of Hummelstown, Pa., and Noel Roger Jefferson of Germantown; brothers, Woodrow Jefferson and Reuben Jefferson, both of Germantown; a sister, Anna Gay Burton of Hillsboro, Ohio; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown.

Bernard 'Spike' Kendall, 55, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired truck driver with Queen City Egg Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Kendall; daughters, Tyla Kendall of Newport and Donda Kendall of Miami, Fla.; sons, Anthony Kendall and Ricky Wayne Kendall, both of Newport; sisters, Joyce Thompson of Cold Spring and Donna Kendall of Butler; a brother, Michael Rohrer of Frankfort; and three grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Lula Esther Melching, 97, of Highland Heights, died at 10:53 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a cousin, Alma Christopher.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Carl Eugene 'Gene' Norris, 76, of Cincinnati, formerly of Butler, died Monday at Mount Healthy Christian Home in Cincinnati. He was a bricklayer and a World War II veteran.

Survivors include his wife, June L. Jellison Norris; daughters, Margaret Jo Holland and Terri N. Burck, both of Cincinnati; a son, Randy Gene Norris of Kentucky; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bridgetown Church of Christ, Cincinnati. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Cincinnati. Art D. Papierski, 71, of Lexington, died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital East in Lexington. He was a retired employee of Al-Tech Steel Corp. in Dunkirk, N.Y., and a member of Dunkirk VFW Post No. 1017. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Hallie Hammond Audas Papierski; a son, John Papierski of Dunkirk, N.Y.; stepsons, Alan Audas of Independence, Ted Schierkart, John Schierkart III and Tom Schierkart, all of Eldred, Pa.; a daughter, Gloria Lawson of Mount Washington; a brother, Stanley Papierski of Dunkirk; three grandchildren, numerous step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Shirlie L. Phillips, 77, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

John W. Roberts, 78, of Florence, died at 5:24 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a superintendent with Kirk & Blum Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Florence United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Cole Roberts; a daughter, Colleen Roberts Pellman of Clinton, N.Y.; a sister, Nannie Lee Sickman of Hebron; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Richwood Cemetery.

Roy S. Robertson, 89, of Covington, died Monday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. He was a retired maintenance welder with General Motors, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Robertson; sons, James Robertson of Highland Heights and Edward Robertson of Florence; daughters, Sannie Kidd of Fort Mitchell, Ora June Bowen of Crittenden, Christine Wilkinson and Willa Coakley, both of Burlington; 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Maggie Smith, 87, of Melbourne, died Tuesday at River Valley Nursing Home, Butler.

She was a homemaker. Her husband, Leroy Smith; a son, Delbert Hyden; and a daughter, Della Philpot, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, John Hyden of Clay County; daughters, Hazel Powell of Lilly, Addie Davidson of Warsaw and Joyce Reed of Florence; a sister, Cleo Allen of London; 25 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

Local services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, with visitation from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Other services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Hensley Holiness Church in Hensley, with visitation starting at 4 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Hensley Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hensley Holiness Church, Hensley, Ky. 40962.

Michael E. Staggs, 20, of Edgewood, died Tuesday at University Hospital, Louisville. He was a senior technician with Valvoline Oil, Edgewood.

Survivors include his parents, Michael J. and Debbie L. Staggs of Edgewood; brothers, Justin Staggs and Nathan Staggs, both at home; and grandparents, Ronald and Helen Staggs of Burlington and Charles Ficke of Cincinnati.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Elsmere Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Elsmere Baptist Church, 250 Garvey Ave., Elsmere, Ky. 41018.
