Denis Schrand, was treasurer, firefighter for city of Fort Mitchell
Denis Schrand spent much of his life helping to protect Fort Mitchell - as a firefighter since his teen years and more recently looking out for the city's money.
Mr. Schrand, 60, of Fort Mitchell, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood after apparently suffering a heart attack at his home.
Along with 42 years service on the fire department, Mr. Schrand was Fort Mitchell's city treasurer.
'I have personally known Denny for over 40 years. He has always been committed to any task that he undertook, whether it be as treasurer, as a member of the fire department, for his church or for his family,' Fort Mitchell City Coordinator Bill Goetz said.
Mr. Schrand retired from Western and Southern Life Insurance Co. more than a decade ago, and in July 1987 he was appointed Fort Mitchell treasurer. He also handled personnel, safety and insurance matters for the city.
'Denny was a very detail oriented and meticulous person,' Goetz said.
'Because of his knowledge and the quality of his work, the city of Fort Mitchell has always received an excellent report from its auditors over the years. His knowledge of investments and his attention to the stock market have also been chiefly responsible for the city realizing the maximum return on its investments. The city will certainly miss him,' he added.
Mr. Schrand's service on the fire department began in 1956. Over the years he was a lieutenant, a captain and an assistant chief. 'The fire department was a big part of his life,' said Mr. Schrand's son, Tim Schrand of Fort Mitchell.
Fires at the White Horse Restaurant and Beverly Hills Supper Club were among the large blazes he helped to battle, said his son.
'He was a very dependable guy, and a very nice guy. I served with him almost 30 years,' said Tom Schneider, another fire department veteran.
Mr. Schrand was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell.
Other survivors include his wife, Jan; a daughter, Nancy Collins of Villa Hills; and four grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Homes.
Mary Joan Arlinghaus, 46, of Edgewood, died of cancer at 5:45 p.m. Friday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. She was an accountant with Arlinghaus Builders in Edgewood and a member of St. Pius X Church, Edgewood.
Survivors include her husband, Ted Robert Arlinghaus; sons, Benjamin J. Arlinghaus, Ralph J. Arlinghaus, Ted R. Arlinghaus, Raymond R. Arlinghaus, Bruce N. Arlinghaus and Jerry D. Arlinghaus, all of Edgewood; daughters, Rachel J. Arlinghaus, Tricia M. Arlinghaus, Roseann E. Arlinghaus and Cecelia A. Arlinghaus, all of Edgewood; her father and stepmother, Raymond L. and Joanne M. Barth of Erlanger; brothers, Bob Barth and Don Barth, both of Edgewood, Dan Barth of Cincinnati and Tom Barth of Erlanger; and sisters, Linda Rogers of Independence, Barb Barth of Wilder, and Janet Hermes and Patti Dixon, both of Edgewood.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 tonight at St. Pius X Church. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Pauline Parker Baker, 88, of Taylor Mill, died at 9:15 p.m. Friday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Kenton Baptist Church. Her husband, Henry Clay Baker, died in 1977.
Survivors include a son, Dennis Joe Baker of Walton; daughters, Carol Truitt of Fort Wright and Judith Scalf of Erlanger; a brother, Nick Trapp of Tiffin, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Rebecca Beckett, 25, of Norwood, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died at 8:29 p.m. Thursday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Kandice Banks of Norwood; her father and stepmother, Richard and Terry Beckett of Norwood; her mother, Ruth Beckett of Cincinnati; brothers, Wayne Smith of Ghent, David Beckett of Erlanger, Richard Beckett of Covington and Larry Smith of Norwood; and sisters, Kelley McCown of Covington, Kathleen Beckett of West Alexander, Pa., and Amanda Smith of Norwood.

Leslie T. Carter, 79, of Florence, died at 7:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired assembly line worker with General Motors, Cincinnati, a former coal miner and a member of United Auto Workers union.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie Widener Carter; daughters, Betty Hill of Williamsburg, Sue Wynn of Erlanger, Linda Gaines of Pineville and Cathy Faulkner of Rockhold; sons, Leslie T. Carter Jr. of Cincinnati and Johnny Carter of Florence; a brother, Bill Carter of Corbin; 20 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Arlie Caudill, 71, of Burlington, died at 10:20 a.m. Sunday at his home. He was a retired operations manager with the franchise division of Chem-Lawn, a member of East Bend Baptist Church and the National Rifle Association and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Scott Caudill; sons, Arlie Caudill III of Mount Sterling, Robert Caudill of Warner Robins, Ga., and Andrew Caudill of Owensville; a daughter, Hope Newkirk of Mount Sterling; a stepson, Jeff Lustenberg of Corinth; a stepdaughter, Kimberly Mallory of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; sisters, Jerry Lou Dempsey of Mount Sterling and Becky Stull of Lexington; and 12 grandchildren.

Henrietta Drake, 80, of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. She was a homemaker.

Lester A. Edwards, 77, of Latonia, died at 10:55 a.m. Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. He was a retired clerk with Phelps Townhouse, Cincinnati, and attended Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Sturgeon Edwards; a daughter, Marsha Sue Clayton of Bowling Green; a half-brother, Marshall Edwards of Cincinnati; and one granddaughter.

Louella Jane Ennis, 78, of Sanders, died Saturday at her home. She was a retired homemaker and farmer and a member of Whites Run Baptist Church and the Women's Missionary Union. Her husband, Wallace Lee Ennis, died in 1987.
Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Lewellyn of Sanders; a son, Garry Ennis of Carrollton; a sister, Helen Turner of Carrollton; and three grandchildren.

James Hammond, 80, formerly of Ludlow, died at 2:35 a.m. today at Madonna Manor in Villa Hills.

Anna Rita Jackson, 73, of Florence, died at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Erlanger.
Survivors include her husband, Russell D. Jackson; a daughter, Triny Anne Purdy of Florence; a son, John Russell Jackson of North Bend, Wash.; a stepson, Russell D. Jackson Jr. of Verona; sisters, Rose Marie Wolfzorn of Highland Heights and Enda Mae Howard of Fort Thomas; a brother, Leo Terhaar of Silver Grove; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Phyllis I. Kelly, 67, of Newport, died Saturday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a buyer with Van Leunens and a volunteer with the Women's Crisis Center and Echo Inter- Church Organization of Newport. She was a member of the Saturday Nighters Club at First Christian Church of Fort Thomas.
Survivors include her husband, C. C. Kelly; a son, Richard Hesch Jr. of Fort Thomas; daughters, Connie Dorgan of Grants Lick, Dianne Dotson of Cold Spring and Sandra Schwiekert of Erlanger; a sister, Imogene Harris of Woodlawn; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

John E. Kennedy Jr., 82, of Ludlow, died at 2:35 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles Care Center, Fort Wright. He was a former business manager with Plumbers and Gas Fitter Union Local No. 59 in Cincinnati and a member of St. Anne Church in West Covington, Kehoe Council Knights of Columbus in Ludlow and Prime Time Senior Citizens of Erlanger.
Survivors include his wife, Mae Yelton Kennedy; sons, John E. Gilbert G. Laake, 73, of Bellevue, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He as a truck driver with H. H. Meyer Packing Co. and a Navy veteran. Mr. Laake was awarded the President's Volunteer Action Award by President Ronald Reagan in 1986 for his work with the Red Cross Disaster Team.
Survivors include his wife, Madeline Laake; daughters, Theresa Craig of Dayton, Barbara Cropper of Pisgah, Ohio, and Rosemary Duffy of Bellevue; sons, Gilbert Laake of Riverside, Calif., Mark Laake and Thomas Laake, both of Bellevue; a brother, Joseph Laake of Cincinnati; sisters, Corrine Kuhn and Margie Stabb, both of Cincinnati, and Clara McBride of Lake Placid, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Leslie Vernon Lockard, 72, of Florence, died at 8:50 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired security guard with Western-Southern Insurance Co. and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his father, Everett Lockard of Florence; and a sister, Ila Lockard of Florence.

Sister Marian Oldendick, O.S.B., 88, of Villa Hills, died at 6:55 p.m. Saturday at St. Walburg Monastery Infirmary in Villa Hills. She was an elementary school teacher at Holy Cross, St. Henry and St. Benedict Commercial until 1944, when she became a lab and X-ray technician. She retired in 1979, then served the internal needs of the monastery and visited needy families.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at St. Walburg Monastery. A vigil service will be at 7:30 tonight at the monastery. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. James A. Price, 64, of Cynthiana, died Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. He was a retired tool and die maker and owner of Cynthiana Tool and Die. He was a former state president, district deputy and exalted ruler of Cynthiana Elks Lodge No. 438, a member of Taylor Lodge No. 164 in Berry and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Verda Jones Price; daughters, Jamie Lou Barnes of Louisville and Sandra Ruth Sosbe of Mount Sterling; brothers, Jack Price and George L. Price, both of Harrison County; sisters, Elouise Cason of Cynthiana and Betty Southerland of Lexington; and two grandchildren.

Justin Kent Renfro, 9 days, of Owenton, died Thursday at University Medical Center, Lexington.
Survivors include his parents, Joy Renfro and Barry McCormick, both of Owenton; and a twin brother, Joshua Blake Renfro.

Louise Evelyn Ewing Ries, 84, of Fort Thomas, died at 5:05 a.m. Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker, a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Newport, and a volunteer in the gift shop at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. Her husband, Clifford Ries, died in 1983.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Grosenbach of Cold Springs; a sister, Elizabeth Racel of Indianapolis; two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Sterman, 75, of Alexandria, died at 12:20 p.m. Sunday at her residence. She was a homemaker. Two sons, James Morris and Marion Morris, both preceded her in death.

Noble Stockton, 67, of Bethel, Ohio, died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Hospice of Blue Ash in Cincinnati. He was a retired security guard and laborer. His wife, Christine Ellen Thornton Stockton, died in 1994.

Marian G. Whitley, 80, of Latonia, died at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at her daughter's home in Taylor Mill. She was a retired housekeeper with Rosedale Manor Nursing Home in Latonia and a member of Runyon Memorial Christian Church in Latonia and Kutera Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 50. Her husband, Woodrow Wilson Whitley, died in 1966.
