Services for James Harrison Allen, 60, are set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Heartland Funeral Home in Early. Chaplain Dave Fair is officiating. Interment will follow in Zephyr Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening, Feb. 27, 2004, at Heartland.
Mr. Allen died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, in Brownwood.
He was a retired truck driver and lived in Zephyr.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Allen, whom he wed Aug. 22, 1963; two daughters, Bethany Willett and her husband, Chris, and Susan Jackson and her husband, Robert; seven sisters, Emma Stevens of Wheelersburg, Ohio, Mary Browning of Piketon, Ohio, Lucille Bishop of East Palestine, Ohio, Essie Elliott of Portsmouth, Ohio, Bessie Roe and Garnet Roe of South Shore, Ky. and Doris Moore of Brownwood; two brothers, Richard Allen of Piketon, Ohio and Clyde Allen of Brownwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ellen Allen; a sister, Bertha Foult, and two brothers, Charles and John Allen.

Opal Allen, 78
Kentucky native
Opal A. Loop Allen, 78, of Wheelersburg, died Tuesday, July 19, 1994, at Southern Ohio Medical Center.
Born June 24, 1916, in Franklin, Ky., a daughter of the late Elton and Gracie Fisher Loop, she was a member of the Lucasville Church of God, and employee of the former Selby Shoe Co., and a supporter of Boys Town.
Preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Allen, whom she married April 27, 1936, in Franklin, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. William (Charlotte) Blevings of Wheelersburg; four brothers, Russell Loop of Portsmouth, Charlie Loop of West Portsmouth, Elton Loop Jr. of Sciotoville and Fred Loop of Wheelersburg; three sisters, Elizabeth Cook of Sciotoville, Ethel Truman of Portsmouth and Shirley Pruitt of San Jose, Calif.; two granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Harrison Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, with the Rev. Virgil Phillips officiating, and interment in Sunset Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and an hour before the service Saturday.
The family’s favorite charity is Boys Town.

Mrs. Anna Anderson
Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Anderson, 75, of Quincy, Ky., who died Friday morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mrs. and Mrs. Arnold Molen, 5961 Woodland avenue, Sciotoville will be held at Quincy Methodist church at 2 p.m. Monday.
Rev. C. W. Sultzbach, pastor of Sciotoville Methodist church, will officiate and burial will follow in Quincy cemetery.
Short services are to be held at 8 p.m. at the Molen residence.
Mrs. Anderson was born Oct 3, 1864, in Greenup county, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Shover. She was married to George Hunt April 5, 1887. Mr. Hunt passed away several years later.
May 4, 1894, she was married to James Anderson, a son of William McKinley Anderson, who also preceded Mrs. Anderson in death.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Leona Hunt Underwood, 638 Fifth street, and Mrs. Georgia Hunt Molen, 5961 Woodland avenue, Sciotoville; three grandchildren, Jesse and Florence Underwood of Portsmouth, Ralph Underwood of Quincy; two great grandchildren, Jean and David Underwood of Quincy; a sister Mrs. Emma Fralley of Letitia, and two brothers, Benjamin Shover of Friendship and Joseph Shover of Kankakee, Ill.
She was a member of Quincy Methodist church.

Judy Applegate, 54
Judy G. Zornes Applegate, 54 of Vanceburg, Ky., died Sunday April 24, 2004, at a Lexington, Ky., hospital.
She was born April, 4, 1950, in Maysville, Ky., a daughter of the late Garland Zornes and Thelma Stone Zornes. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Everett "Buck" Applegate.
Surviving are sons, Robert "Bobby" Applegate; stepsons, Russell and Myron Irey; daughter, Tawana Jones; stepdaughter, Carolyn Walker; brothers, Donald J., Junior, Earl C., James A., Paul and John Zornes; sisters Glenda Gilliam, Loretta Lewis, Kay Walters, Ruth Swimm and Kathy Howell; three grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Happy Hollow Union Church with the Rev. Anthony Cornes officiating. Interment will be in Happy Hollow cemetery at Ribolt, Ky. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to noon at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg.

Iva Jordan Arthurs, born May 14, 1921 in Carter Count, Ky., passed away February 26, 1998.
Preceded in death by husband John Arthurs and 2 sons Robert Lee Arthurs and Harry Ray Arthurs. Survived by 3 daughters, Mary Buckler, Margaret (Junior Osborne) and Ina Faye (Troy) McCarty; 4 sons, John L. Hubert (Darlene); daughters-in-law, Virginia and Rita; 32 grandchildren; 77 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Friends received Saturday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Maeder-Quint-Tiberi Funeral Home, 1068 S. High St., where service will be held 10 am Sunday. Burial Springbank Cemetery. Rev. Gene Williams officiating.

VANCEBURG - Mrs. Goldie Pendlum Ash, 90, died at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept.7, 1999 in the Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after an extended illness. She was the widow of Delbert Ash, who died April 16, 1982. Born in Carter County, Ky., on July 12, 1909, she was the daughter of the late John Steele and Martha Williams Pendlum.
Surviving are four sons, Hansel and Hubert Ash, both of Tollesboro, and Mitchell and David Ash, both of Mansfield, Ohio; and one daughter, Martha Savage of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Dakota Mead of Cincinnati; a half brother, John Pendlum, of Wheelersburg, Ohio, 13 grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Rival Ash, on Feb 5, 1999.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday the Gaydos Funeral Home with Rev. Rob Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Lewis County Memory Gardens, Vanceburg.
Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 8 a.m. until the hour of services on Saturday.

Goldie Ash, 90
Goldie Pendlum Ash, 90 of Vanceburg (Ky.) rehabilitation and Health Care Center, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at the care center.
She was born July 12, 1909, in Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late John Steele and Martha Williams Pendlum. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Ash, on April 16, 1982. Surviving are four sons, Hansel Ash, and Hubert Ash, both of Tollesboro, Ky., and Mitchell Ash and David Ash, both of Mansfield; one daughter, Martha Savage of Dayton; one sister, Dakota Mead of Cincinnati; one half-brother, John Pendlum of Wheelesburg; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nephews and nieces.
She also was preceded in death by one son, Rival Ash.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gados Funeral Home in Vanceburg, with the Rev. Rob Morton officiating and interment in Lewis County Memory Gardens.

Ashley
Mrs. Cassie Ashley, 83, of 1128 13th St., died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at her residence.
She was a native of Lewis Co., Ky.
Her first husband, Mickle Parker, died in 1948 and her second husband, Harvey F. Ashley, in 1975.
Surviving are five sons, Ernest Parker, at home, Thurman Parker of Minford, Herman Parker of Canada; six daughters, Mrs. Dollie Lambert of Mansfield, Mrs. Alma Jordan, Vanceburg, Ky., Mrs. Nellie Young of Minford, Mrs. Dorothy Brown of Akron and Mrs. Laura Davis and Mrs. Ella Bee Bush, both of Lucasville; a brother, Wince Howard of Highland Bend, Sciotoville, and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Butler of Vanceburg, Ky.; 65 grandchildren, 119 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.
Services are to be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Windel-Howland Funeral Home, with interment in Wooten Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday.

Mrs. Caroline Austill Is Victim; Was Reading Newspaper When Her Dress Ignited; Funeral Wednesday At Piketon
Mrs. Caroline Austill, 82, who for many years was a resident of Piketon, was so badly burned Sunday at noon when her clothes caught fire that she died at 9:15 p.m. Sunday. She was reading a newspaper and when it caught fire she attempted to suppress the flames. Her dress became ignited and before the flames could be extinguished she was burned all over her body. Mrs. Austill lived with her daughter, Mrs. Phoebe Spurck, who is employed in the home of J. H. B. Burke of Wheelersburg, where the distressing fatality occurred. Dr. Martyn Taylor of Sciotoville was called to the Burke home and attended the aged woman. He notified relatives that she only had a short time to live. She was burned over her entire body and it is believed she inhaled the flames. Mrs. Spurck used a blanket to smother the flames. Mrs. Austill was the widow of the late Newton Austill long a prominent citizen in Pike county. She leaves three sisters, Mrs. Spurck, Mrs. Carrie Lauerman of 725 Seventh street, and Mrs. Elizabeth ??? Armsey of 303 Court street, this city.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Piketon M. E. Church at ?? p.m. Wednesday. Interment will follow in the Mound Cemetery.

PIKETON WOMAN BURNS TO DEATH
Miss Emma Austill, of Piketon, was so severely burned when her clothing caught fire Monday Afternoon, that her death resulted at 5:00 o’clock Monday evening.
While standing with her back to the stove, her clothing suddenly became involved in flames. She called to her mother, Mrs. L. N. Austill, who was at the time upstairs. Mrs. Austill hurried downstairs and threw rugs and quilts about the flaming body of her daughter. This failing to check the flames, water was successfully used.
Mrs. Jacob Lauerman, of 725 Seventh street is a sister of the deceased and also Mrs. H. N. Heath, of 1718 Seventeenth street. Miss Austill had many friends in Portsmouth.
Miss Austill, who was 48 years old, had for yeas been a highly esteemed resident of Piketon, where the news of her death was learned with profound regret.
Among the local residents who will attend Miss Austill’s funeral will be Mrs. and Mrs. George Youngman, of Timmons avenue; Misses Emma and Louise Reissinger, of Oakland avenue; Mrs. Mary Rice and daughter Ada, Mrs. Jacob Lauermann of Seventh street, and Mrs. and Mrs. H. H. Heath.

Emma Jane Austill
Emma Jane Austill was born Dec. 3, 1869 and departed this life Nov. 25, 1918, aged 48 years, 11 months and 22 days. She was the daughter of Isaac Newton and Caroline Johnson Austill, and leave to mourne her loss, her mother, three sisters, Mrs. Chas. Armsey of Chillicothe, Mrs. Jacob Lauerman of Portsmouth and Mrs. Frank Spurck of Darlington, Maryland, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Her father preceded her in death May 19, 1917.
She had been a member of the Piketon M. E. church since the pastorate of the Rev. D. S. Porter. She was a charter member of the Magnolia Lodge Daughters of Rebekah of Piketon and also of the Daughters of America of Portsmouth. All during her father’s illness she stayed constantly with him, attending to every want and humering every whim. After his death she gave all her time to the care of her mother and the other members of her family. Hers was a life of devotion not only to her family but to any one who needed a friend.
