Thomas Matthews, devoted dad

Thomas E. Matthews was always there for his children.

'He was just a good father,' said his wife of 40 years, Angela Matthews.

'He really loved his kids.'

Mr. Matthews, 69, of Covington, died at 10 a.m. Friday at University Hospital in Cincinnati.

He was a retired truck driver for Roadway Express. Mr. Matthews also was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

A member of the Northern Kentucky Baseball Hall of Fame, Mr. Matthews played sports in the late 1940s at Newport Catholic High School, which is now Newport Central Catholic High School.

Mr. Mitchell also is survived by his sons, Thomas Matthews Jr. of Germany and Stanley Matthews of Covington; daughters, Mary Tabben of Florence and Theresa Matthews of Covington; and 10 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Augustine Church, Covington.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, 313 W. 19th St., Covington.

Memorials are suggested to St. Augustine Adopt-A-Student Fund, 1839 Euclid Ave., Covington, Ky., 41014.

Mable C. Britten, 83, of Maysville, died at 1:30 a.m. Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. She was a partner with her husband, Frank Britten, in Britten Plumbing and Heating, Maysville. She was a member of St. Patrick Church, Maysville.

Her husband died in 1982. Survivors include a nephew, Jerry F. Britten of Terrace Park, Ohio, and a niece, Joan M. McCoy of Oxford, Ohio.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Church, Maysville. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Sunday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville, with prayers at 8. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Maysville. Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20037.

James Hobert Frakes, 73, of Dayton, died at 11:20 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a retired warehouseman for Bennie Mandel Produce Co.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Anne Roessler Frakes; and brothers, Harry Frakes of Edgewood and Joe Frakes of Ludlow.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton, is handling arrangements.

Harry Albert Geimeier, 83, of West Covington, died at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice in Covington. He was a retired firefighter for the Covington Fire Department and a former employee of the U.S. Postal Service and Brink's Inc. He was an Army veteran and a commander of the Norman-Barnes American Legion Post No. 70 in Covington.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Brewer Geimeier; sons, Dr. William Geimeier of Wilmington, Del., Tom Geimeier of Burlington and Harry Geimeier Jr. of Fort Wright; a daughter, Mary Pelfrey of Hebron; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Covington Firefighters Scholarship Fund, 100 E. Robbins St., Covington, Ky. 41011, or St. John's Congregational Church, Highway Ave., Covington, Ky. 41016.

Mary Ellen Gerhardt, 95, formerly of Newport and Highland Heights, died at 1:05 p.m. Thursday at Winchester Health Care Center in Winchester. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Joseph Gerhardt, died in 1968. include a son, James Gerhardt of Berea; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, with visitation from noon Monday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Cold Spring, 4410 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076.

Roy Vincent Holt, 72, of Alexandria, died at 8:20 p.m. Feb. 12 at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas after an auto accident on Gilbert Ridge Road in Alexandria.

He was a retired computer programmer for General Electric and a World War II Army veteran.

Survivors include a son, Roy J. Holt of Bellevue; and a sister, Shirley Hubbard of Reno, Nev.

Services will be at noon Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, with visitation from 11 a.m. will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Alvis A. Roy, 83, of Covington, died at 12:15 p.m. Friday at his residence.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Betty K. Schillmoeller, 82, formerly of Fort Mitchell, died Friday at Madonna Manor nursing home, Villa Hills.

She owned the former Betty's Beauty Shop, Covington.

Survivors include sisters, Margie Sullivan of Denver and Louise Weber of Crestiview Hills, and a brother, Joe Schillmoeller of Anchorage, Alaska.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Madonna Manor, Villa Hills, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Madonna Manor, 2344 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills, Ky. 41017.

Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Velma H. Schuh, 86, of Covington, died Friday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Mother of God Church Ladies Society, Covington, and Cardinal Chapter of Golden Age Club of Covington.

Survivors include her husband, William H. Schuh, and sisters, Helen Michael of Covington and Irma Wilkerson of Edgewood.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington, with visitation from 9 a.m. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to St. Charles Care Center, 600 Farrell Drive, Covington, Ky. 41011.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

James Simpson Jr., 70, of Covington, died Thursday at his residence.

He owned and operated Jones and Simpson Funeral Home in Covington and was the first black person to serve on the Covington City Commission.

He served eight years on the board that operates Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and was its chairman in 1978. He was a trustee for the St. Elizabeth Medical Center board for 17 years and before that served on the board of Booth Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Zona Simpson; sons, James Simpson III of Mason, Ohio, and Ronald Simpson and Arnold Simpson, both of Covington; a daughter, Adrienne Simpson of Covington; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Covington, with visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, 120 E. Ninth St., Covington, Ky. 41011, or American Lung Association, 11113 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Christina M. Skelton, 15, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at her residence. She was a freshman at Grant County High School.

Survivors include her father, Chuck Skelton of Berry; her mother, Anna Wolf Skelton of Dry Ridge; and a brother, Daniel A. Skelton of Dry Ridge.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Robert Owen Smith, 80, of Taylor Mill, died at 10:10 a.m. Thursday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington. He was retired from the City of Covington Public Works Department and was an Army veteran of World War II.

His wife, Ruth Ann Smith, died in 1976. A son, Alan Smith, died in 1996, and a daughter, Gayle Robbins, died in 1982. Survivors include a daughter, Linda R. Wills of Taylor Mill; a brother, Paul William Smith of Morning View; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, with visitation from 9 a.m.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Caden Byron Thompson, aged 16 days, of Cincinnati, died Thursday at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati.

Survivors include his parents, Stafford and Jeni Thompson; brothers, Trevor Thompson and Colin Thompson, both at home; grandparents, Dolores Armstrong of Southgate, and Douglas and Darla Thompson of Cincinnati; and great-grandparents, Richard and Louise Thompson of Dayton, Ohio, and Jacob Hippert of Miamisburg, Ohio.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis de Sales Church, Newport.

Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.
