George "Mike' Gall, star player at Dayton

George 'Mike' Gall was an excellent student and athlete at Dayton High School.

His older brother, Andrew Gall of Fort Thomas, said Mike was such a good outfielder and pitcher that he was once considered a prospect for the Cincinnati Reds.

'He was very well-liked when he was younger and played ball,' Andrew Gall said. 'He was outspoken and was firm in his decisions.'

Mike Gall, 65, of Daytona Beach, Fla., formerly of Dayton, died Feb. 18 at his home. He was a salesman, business owner and a Korean War veteran.

The Gall brothers grew up in Northern Kentucky. Mike Gall eventually moved to Indiana and Louisville before settling in Daytona Beach, where he operated a restaurant, his brother said.

Mike Gall suffered from cancer and spent his last days calling friends and making amends, his brother said.

'Toward the end, he tried calling everyone,' Andrew Gall said.

Other survivors include his wife, Gladys Gall; a stepson, Steve of Daytona Beach; a son, Michael Gall of Cincinnati; daughters, Kathleen Gall, Barbara Gall and Susan Gall, all of Cincinnati; and a sister, Ruth Hughes of Bay St. Louis, Miss. Services were in Daytona Beach. Burial was in Daytona Beach.

Sara S. Barker, 86, of Cincinnati, died at noon Tuesday at Mount Washington Care Center in Cincinnati. She was a retired employee of Cincinnati Milacron, an artist and a former member of Falmouth United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Fowee of Merritt Island, Fla.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, is handling arrangements.

Micah Lee Daniel Bernard, 13 days, of Independence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Velma 'Billy' Chandler, 85, of Ludlow, died at 1:46 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired clerk with Ernest Fruit Market, Covington, and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Ludlow. Her husband, Raymond Chandler, died in 1965.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Dressman of Florence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church, 426 Oak St., Ludlow, Ky. 41016. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.

Leo Thomas Courtney, 58, of Cincinnati, formerly of Falmouth, died Monday at Franciscan Hospital Westwood Campus in Cincinnati. He was a contractor and a self-employed painter and repairman.

Survivors include his wife, Juanite Johnson Courtney; a son, Leo Thomas Courtney Jr. of Cincinnati; a daughter, April Ware of Mays Lick; stepsons, Thomas Moore and Donald Moore, both of Cincinnati; stepdaughters, Norma Brummett of Marion, Ind., and Novella Jackson of Cynthiana; his mother, Alma McGuire Courtney of Winchester; sisters, Martha Miller of Winchester and Ruby Drake of Falmouth; and several grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Betty Jane Glass Day, 72, of Warsaw, died at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday in her residence.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Lois L. Drury, 68, of Vevay, Ind., formerly of Peach Grove, died Tuesday at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind. She was a seamstress with Main Tent Awning Co. in Cincinnati. A son, Billy Grimm, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, John Drury; a son, Bruce Smith of Falmouth; daughters, Linda Perry and Carolyn Jewell, both of Warsaw, and Sandy Murrell of Columbus, Miss.; nine grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Plum Creek Cemetery, Campbell County.

Lucille L. Foster, 70, of Covington, died at 9 p.m. Monday at her home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Elmore Foster; a son, David Foster of Ludlow; daughters, Connie Foster of Florida, Leona Case of Newport and Annette Dorsey of Grant County; a brother, William Poynter of Florence; 12 grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

James Gention, 57, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights.

Arrangements are pending at Radel Funeral Home, Newport.

Jeannine Haynes, 43, of Cincinnati, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Fireball Ministries Church, Cincinnati.

Survivors include a son, Derek Johnson of Cincinnati; sisters, Charlene Ochs of Harrison, Ohio, Patricia Penny of Peebles, Ohio, and Kathleen Yates of South Bend, Ohio; and a brother, William Mahan of Miami Heights, Ohio.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Fireball Ministries Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday and last until time of services Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Vine Street Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati. Cooper Funeral Home, Alexandria, is handling arrangements.

Beatrice Heathman, 71, of Louisville, died at 7:01 p.m. Tuesday at Audubon Hospital in Louisville.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Howard L. Hoffman, 59, of Taylor Mill, died at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a retired construction foreman with Hoge-Warren & Zimmerman, Cincinnati, a member of Staffordsburg United Methodist Church in Morning View and a Marine Corps veteran.

Survivors include his wife, June M. Vastine Hoffman; a daughter, Sonja DeAnn Edwards of Independence; his mother, Ruth Louise Hoffman of Morning View; a brother, Richard D. Hoffman of Irvin; sisters, Sandra J. Reese of Taylor Mill and Lynn Wermuth of Independence; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Staffordsburg United Methodist Church, 11815 Staffordsburg Road, Morning View, Ky. 41063; or American Lung Association, 11113 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.

Anna M. Huesman, 85, of Edgewood, died at 10:55 a.m. Monday at Highlands of Fort Thomas. She was a retired tax examiner with the Internal Revenue Service.

Her husband, Albert G. Huesman, died in 1972. Her son, Gregory Huesman, died in 1977.

Survivors include daughters, Marlene Ziegler of Edgewood and Judith Gerding of Alexandria; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

Jerome C. Lohre, 95, of Villa Hills, died Saturday at St. Charles Care Center. He was a retired carpenter with Carpenter's Union Local No. 698, and a member of Villa Hills Civic Club and Holy Name Society at St. Joseph Church in Crescent Springs.

Survivors include daughters, Barbara Cooney of Villa Hills and Peggy Huhn of Dayton, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church Building Fund or Remembrance Fund, 2470 Loraine Court, Crescent Springs, Ky. 41071. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Harry H. May, 91, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Donald Allan Sanders, 42, of Arlington Heights, Ohio, died Friday at Middletown Hospital. He was a welder.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Colquit Sanders; sons, Donald Allan Sanders II, Donald Perry, Donald Rogers, Rick Spellman and Michael Rogers, all of Arlington Heights; a daughter; a brother, John Sanders of Cold Spring; sisters, Vickie Sanders and Sandy Hardin, both of Dayton, Sue Hardy of Belleview, Paula Kilgore of Coral Springs, Fla., Lisa Sanders of Highland Heights, Kathy Sanders of Cincinnati and Mary Sanders of Covington.

Services will be at 8 tonight at Vorhis Funeral Home, 310 Dunn St., Cincinnati. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m.

William Joseph Spada, 83, of Ringgold, Ga., formerly of Kenton County, died Monday at Hutcheson Memorial Hospital, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. He was a retired employee of Southern Railroad.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Hood Spada; daughters, Cecile Spada of Ringgold, Patricia Edgemon of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jay V. Spada of Port Richie, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home, Fort Oglethorpe. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in U.S. National Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Joseph R. Suchanek, 71, of Newport, died Monday at Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired highway engineer with Vogt Ivers & Associates, Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Suchanek; daughters, Sandra Preston and Patricia Cunningham, both of Wilder, and Vicki Baioni of Newport; sisters, Dorothea Eker of Dayton and Millie Cox of Florence; brothers, Jason Suchanek of Fort Mitchell and Samuel Suchanek of Charlotte, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Roy E. Tillett, 68, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a sheet-metal worker with Western Hills Stamping Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Wells Tillett; a daughter, Kristy Craig of Alexandria; sons, Andy Tillett of Dayton, Dan Tillett of Florence, Don Tillett of Baltimore, Greg Tillett of Whittier, Calif., Roy Tillett Jr. of Mary Esther, Fla.; a sister, Lillian Carrier of Alexandria; brothers, George Tillett Jr. of Alexandria and Ronald Tillett of Stanford; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Ruby Tolliver, 78, of Maysville, died Tuesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. She was a retired presser with Nu Way Laundry and Groce's Dry Cleaners in Maysville.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer Lawrence Tolliver; a son, Ray Johnson of Maysville; and one granddaughter.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.

Edward Volpenhein Sr., 78, of Fort Wright, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.

Mary Lou Nickerson Waddell, 62, of Augusta, died at 4:50 p.m. Monday at her home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Jesse A. Waddell; daughters, Barbara Waddell Moore, Sue Colemire and Donna Waddell, all of Brooksville, and Lisa Sebastion of Augusta; sons, Jesse Wayne Waddell and Danny Waddell, both of Augusta, and Paul Eugene Waddell of Union; brothers, Charles Nickerson and Wayne Nickerson, both of Augusta, and James Nickerson of Elizabethtown; sisters, Mabel Smith of Shepardville, Shirley Henderson of Carlisle, Helen Fredrick of Mount Olivet, Janice Flynn of Falmouth, Marie Boggs of Olive Hill, Linda Yates of Foster, and Lizzie White and Bonnie Litzinger, both of Augusta; 21 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Floyd C. Wells Sr., 93, of Crittenden, died Tuesday at River Valley Nursing Home, Butler. He was a truck driver with the Ready Mix concrete company and a member of Teamsters Local 100, Cincinnati. A son, Floyd Wells Jr., died in 1990.

Survivors include daughters, Doris Bramerloh of Union and Juanita Fey of Crittenden; nine grandchildren; and 17 great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
