Edgar L. Elmore, ran sawmill, grew crops in Boone County

Edgar L. Elmore had a simple philosophy of life: 'I pay my bills and treat the other fellow the way I want to be treated,' he once said.

It served the Boone County farmer and sawmill operator well. Mr. Elmore of Walton, died Thursday afternoon in Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence, at the age of 97.

Mr. Elmore worked until he was past 90, making tobacco sticks, barn timbers and other specialty items at his saw mill on Salem Road. He cut enough tobacco sticks, Mr. Elmore claimed, to build a picket fence all the way around Boone County.

His sawmill didn't have a name, and he didn't solicit business. Farmers throughout Boone and Kenton counties sought him out when they needed tobacco sticks or other timber cut to order. 'I know everybody in Boone County, and everybody knows me,' he related.

Mr. Elmore once broke both arms in a fall but said that having his arms in casts barely slowed his pace of farm work. 'I cut and baled 1,700 pounds of hay with both arms in casts. When it was time to take the casts off, one was already about worn off,' he had said.

A native of Casey County, Mr. Elmore came to this area to work in a Cincinnati can factory. He returned to farming in the 1940s and soon added the sawmill because he needed wood for repairs to his own barn. A fire shut him down at one point, but he was soon back in business.

Mr. Elmore was reluctant to give up his enterprise. 'I've been working 16, 18 hours a day most of my life. I ain't going to retire,' he said. 'I don't accomplish as much as I used to. I'm getting too old. But I keep busy. I know my time is about over, but I ain't going to sit down and hurry it up either.'

Mr. Elmore was a member of Walton Christian Church. His wife, Bessie Elmore, died in 1971. A son, Charles Elmore, died in 1998.
