Frieda Schulz, co-founded jewelry stores
Frieda Schulz and her husband, Henry Schulz, made a successful life in Northern Kentucky as owners of Schulz Jewelry stores.
Henry Schulz learned and perfected watch repair as an apprentice in Germany, where he was raised.
Mrs. Schulz, also a German immigrant, was a bookkeeper and buyer for the stores.
Customers enjoyed her congenial nature, said a son, Ed Schulz of Latonia.
Mrs. Schulz died at 10 a.m. Sunday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas. The former Park Hills resident was 91.
She moved to Greater Cincinnati as a teen-ager and met her husband of about 60 years at a dance at the Hotel Alms in Cincinnati.
They married
in 1927 and had five children.
The family lived for many years in Fort Mitchell.
Mr. and Mrs. Schulz also spent 41 years in Park Hills.
Mr. Schulz learned the watch repair trade as an employee for Gruen Watch Co. in Germany.
After he moved to the United States, he worked for many years as the chief repairman, then manager and general manager, at Motch Jewelers in Covington.
When he opened his own store at Pike Street and Madison Avenue in Covington in 1953, Mrs. Schulz helped with the bookkeeping.
Eventually, they opened two other stores in Latonia and Fort Mitchell.
Mrs. Schulz enjoyed helping purchase the merchandise that was resold at their stores, said Ed Schulz, who took up the trade and did watch repair for the family chain for more than 40 years.
Two of the stores eventually were sold. Mrs. Schulz retired from the business around 1985, two years before her husband's death. The store in Fort Mitchell remains open.
Mrs. Schulz also was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Crestview Hills.
Other survivors include sons, Rodney Schulz of Gloucester, Va., and Robert Schulz of Fort Wright; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Charlotte Castle Landrum Allen, 85, of N. Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Covington, died at 5:40 a.m. Sunday in Fort Myers, Fla.
Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.
Vivian L. Barnett, 71, formerly of Williamstown, died at 11:30 p.m. Monday at Hanover Nursing Center in Hanover, Ind.
Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Mattie Lincoln Bishop, 87, of Falmouth, died Thursday at River Valley Nursing Home in Butler. She was a homemaker and a member of Falmouth Baptist Church. Her husband, Sidney Morgan 'Bob' Bishop, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Christine Owens, Judith Owens, Lena Orr and Brenda Tackett, all of Falmouth, and Nancy Seedle of Columbus, Ohio; sons, Jimmy Bishop of Falmouth, Billy Bishop of West Liberty and Dexter Bishop of Crittenden; brothers, Gilbert Mains of Falmouth and Walter Mains of Dry Ridge; sisters, Mabel Sowder and Mary Crouch, both of Grant County, and Hattie Dunn of Covington; 29 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Pendleton County.
Debbie Lynn Coy, 44, of Cold Spring, died Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a clerk with the Kroger grocery store in Cold Spring, and a member of St. Therese Church, Southgate.
Survivors include her husband, Alan Coy; sons, Ed Seeger and Tom Seeger, both of Cold Spring; and sisters, Paula Bonfert of Erlanger and Bev Linkugel of Fort Thomas.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Therese Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Thelma Lee Crawford, 76, of Worthville, died Saturday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. She was a homemaker and a member of Jordon Baptist Church, Worthville. Her husband, Paul Purdy Crawford, and a son, Ronnie Allen Crawford, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Sherry Lynn Younger Mitchell of Independence and Judy Kaye Armstrong of Sparta; sons, Ricky Carroll Crawford of Covington and Randy Cull Crawford of Worthville; sisters, Helen Lucille Martin of Salem, Ind., and Joyce Ann Hager of Florence; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Worthville Baptist Church. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today at Rogers Funeral Home, Owenton. Burial will be in Worthville Cemetery.
Willie Eleton, 82, of Covington, died at 11:28 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a farmer, an employee of the Etowah factory in Manchester, and a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Ludlow.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Eleton; daughters, Lorraine Davidson of West Chester, Ohio, Janice Massey of Fort Mitchell and Sheila Howard of Hebron; brothers, Lawrence Eleton of Batavia, Ohio, and Terrell Eleton of Hebron; sisters, Lizzie Whittamore of Loveland, Ohio, Sinda Sutton of Owensville, Ohio, and Laura Brown of Hamilton, Ohio; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Frances Beatrice Epperson, 87, of Latonia, died at 9:15 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
Survivors include a brother, Milton Epperson of Simi Valley, Calif.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Cincinnati Cremation Co. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Dorothy Gibson, of Northern Kentucky, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

Sister Mary Colette Leaders, R.G.S., 91, of Fort Thomas, died at 2:56 a.m. Saturday at Pelletier Hall at the Good Shepherd Convent in Fort Thomas. Sister Mary Collette was a social worker, a teacher and a nurse with the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, and had been the superior at the order's convent and boarding schools in both Columbus, Ohio, and Cleveland. She was a former supervising nurse at the order's infirmary in Fort Thomas, and opened the first Alcoholics Anonymous center for women in the United States.
Survivors include sisters, Anne C. Donovan of Margate, Fla., and Dorothy Imars of Cleveland.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pelletier Hall. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today, and 11 a.m. Wednesday until the time of services at Pelletier Hall. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.
Estill 'Bender' Lusby, 76, of Warsaw, died Sunday at Gallatin County Health Care Center in Warsaw. He was a factory worker, a farmer and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Owen County. He was an Army veteran.
Survivors include a sister, Elmo Wilson of Erlanger.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary Street, Owenton. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.
John 'Doug' Rigdon, 73, of Maysville, died at 9:12 a.m. Saturday at his home. He was a equipment operator with the Kentucky Highway Department and an independent contractor. His wife, Helen Christine 'Crickett' Rigdon, preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Donna Patton of Tollesboro, Judy Doyle of Cynthiana and Marla Jackson of Flemingsburg; a stepson, George Mitchell of Maysville; sisters, Hester Shaw of Tollesboro, Lora Hardyman of Bucyrus, Ohio, and Irma Jean Young of Camp Dix.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.
Walter J. Rottman, 82, of Green Valley, Ariz., formerly of Bellevue, died Dec. 25 at Valley Health Care Center in Tucson, Ariz. His wife, Viola Rottman, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his stepdaughter, Susan Vice of Ohio and Marilyn Langan of Michigan; stepsons, Robert Langan of Ohio and John Langan of Arizona; and brothers, Hank Rottman of Green Valley, Ariz., and Robert Rottman of Newport.
Services were Jan. 7 at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Green Valley, Ariz. Green Valley Mortuary and Memorial Gardens in Green Valley, Ariz., handled arrangements.
James Wallace Stark, 79, of Carrollton, died Monday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. He was a retired serviceman and lineman with the Kentucky Utilities Co., a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Carrollton, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Anna K. Stark; sons, James Wallace Stark II of Bardstown and Laman Lee Stark of Carrollton; a brother, Albert Stark of New Castle; a sister, Edith Wood of Warsaw; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home in Carrollton, and from 1 p.m. Wednesday until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.
Howard J. Wehrle Sr., 74, of Fort Thomas, died at 11:28 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired salesman with Myers Tire Supply Co. in Cincinnati, and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Eleanor Mae Norton Wehrle, died in 1998.
Survivors include daughters, Carol Manning of Elsmere and Kimberly Feldkamp of Fort Thomas; sons, Michael J. Wehrle of Newport, Howard J. Wehrle Jr. and Gregory L. Wehrle, both of Edgewood, and Richard E. Wehrle of Erlanger; a brother, Harold Wehrle of Bellevue; 13 grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren.

Jack D. Williams, 71, of Elsmere, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired auto-body and fender repairman with the Campbell County High School Transit Department in Alexandria, and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Williams; sons, Jack Williams of Erlanger, Danny Williams of Florence, Steve Williams of Union, and Darryl Williams and Paul Williams, both of Independence; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.
Mavis Wood, 66, of Carrollton, died Thursday at Norton's Hospital, Louisville. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Taylor, Texas.
Survivors include her husband, Elmer Wood; a daughter, Sheila Gail of Carrollton; sons, Ronald Wood of Taylor, Texas, and Gregory Dewayne Wood of Hutto, Texas; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. today. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Madison, Ind.
Barbara Ann Workman, 36, of Union, died at 6:38 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, James Workman; sons, Sam Moore, at home, and David Dees of Independence; and a sister, Jacqueline Moore of Park Hills.
