Florence Lowry, "community hero,' served Covington Community Center

At the age of 71, Florence S. Lowry walked into the Covington Community Center's lobby offering to volunteer. Twenty years later, the center renamed its community service award in her honor.

The 91-year-old volunteer died at 2:02 a.m. Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati.

As a greeter and receptionist, Mrs. Lowry was the first person most clients saw as they came to the community center for help.

For 20 years, she volunteered four days a week, walking to the center from her Covington home in rain, sunshine and snow.

Early on, the center provided showers for homeless people. Mrs. Lowry was in charge of the shower program, in addition to greeting clients and managing the waiting room.

The Roots of the Community Award, which Mrs. Lowry won in 1994, was renamed the Flo Lowry Roots of the Community Award for her 20 years of volunteer service.

In 1997, she was honored again with the Northern Kentucky United Way's community hero award for her service to the Covington social service agency.

Her son, James R. Lowry of Cincinnati, said his mother was dedicated to her work at the community center because she knew what it was like to be in need.

'She's been there in her life,' he said. 'We had little means - my father was disabled, and she worked all her life and raised four kids. I think she knew what it was to struggle and not know where the next meal was going to come from.'

'She was a very tough lady, and she had three principles that drove her: She had a love of family, a certain love and fear of God, and she had a certain rugged independence.'

Mrs. Lowry was born in Cincinnati and reared in Covington, where she lived almost all her life. She and her husband, William E. Lowry, were married from 1927 until his death in 1970.

During World War II, she worked as a laborer at Wright's plant in Evendale, where they built war machinery at the site of what is now General Electric.

She gave blood religiously while the war went on, James Lowry recalled.

For many years, she worked as a bookkeeper and cashier with Schmidt's Parkview Market in Covington. She left the market in 1966 to work as a bookkeeper for a confectioner and wholesaler in Covington.

She then began her work at Covington Community Center.

'I think she had a certain deference for what she called "her guys' - the homeless, people down and out and in need. She genuinely loved them, and they loved her, I think.'

Mrs. Lowry also was a member of Ladies Aid Association and St. John Congregational Church in West Covington.
