Donald G. Bishop, church volunteer

After Donald G. Bishop retired, he traveled with his wife and friends to 43 states.

But Mr. Bishop was happiest in his Covington neighborhood of Peaselburg, where he grew up and then reared his own family.

Mr. Bishop also liked to mingle with people at bingo games, Turfway Park and pinochle sessions. But he felt luckiest when counting his blessings at family functions and in St. Augustine Church in Covington.

'He was very devoted to his church and his family,' said a son-in-law, Bob Goetz of Covington. 'His life was for his family and his grandkids.'

Mr. Bishop, 71, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington.

Mr. Bishop was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local 24 for 38 years, most of them working at Glenway Sheet Metal in Cincinnati. He retired in 1985.

Mr. Bishop had a lifelong association with St. Augustine Church. In the 1940s, he was a member of the St. Augustine championship baseball team, which played in the Holy Name baseball league.

In the 1950s, he was among a handful of parents who established a basketball program at the church. Later, his children and grandchildren would participate.

In 1978, he began volunteering at a bingo fund-raiser for tuition expenses for children at St. Augustine School. He eventually became bingo captain and was still on the job until recently.

He was vice president of Pathfinders of St. Augustine, a former officer of the St. Augustine Holy Name Society and a loan officer at the St. Augustine Church credit union.

He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Monsignor Ahlmann Council.

Mr. Bishop and his wife, Jane Martin Bishop, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Oct. 16. Other survivors include sons, Gary W. Bishop of Covington and Michael J. Bishop of Anderson Township, Ohio; daughters, Donna Flanagan of Florence and Diana Goetz of Covington; a sister, Ramona Angel of Florence; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Augustine Church. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home in Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God cemetery in Fort Wright.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014, or the St. Augustine School Tuition Fund, 1840 Jefferson Ave., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Mabel Arnett, 68, of Florence, died Friday at the Drake Center in Cincinnati. She was a leathercrafter for Shell Leather, Cincinnati.

Her husband, Ray Arnett, died in 1969. Survivors include sons, Danny Arnett of Union, George Arnett of Hebron and Pete Frye of Florence; a daughter, Linda Holt of Independence; a sister, Mallie Malico of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Holt Family Cemetery, Independence.

Constance Cocco, 66, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, James Eugene Cocco, died in 1992. Survivors include a son, Kenneth E. Cocco of Covington; daughters, Phyliss Marquette of Pensacola, Fla., Becky Beach of Independence, Kathy Cocco of Covington and Gina Cocco of Erlanger; a brother, Richard Allen Thompson of Erlanger; a sister, Dody Richardson of Covington; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence, is in charge.

Garnett Louise Collins, 85, of Fort Thomas, died Friday at her residence. She was a retired office manager for Simon-Fischer Inc. and a member of the American Bowling Congress.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Collins of Fort Thomas; a son, Chuck Daunt of Butler; a stepson, Jack Collins Jr. of Alexandria; a stepdaughter, Kay Peterson of El Cajon, Calif.; a sister, Aileen Simon of Clinton, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, with visitation from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Margaret Gordon Cummins, 98, of Springdale, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died Friday at Maple Knoll Village in Springdale. She formerly was a ward clerk for Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.

Her first husband, Marion Gordon, died in 1959; her second husband, George Cummins, also preceded her in death. Her daughter, Mary Pitcher, died this year, and her son, James Gordon, also preceded her in death. Survivors include grandchildren, Barry Pitcher, Brian Pitcher, Cheryl Gordon and Jamie Gordon of Cincinnati; seven great-grandchildren; one great- great-grandchild; several stepchildren and step-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Vorhis Funeral Home, Springdale, with visitation from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Dorothy Ruth Endress, 70, of Covington, died Wednesday at her residence. She was a homemaker. Her husband, John Charles Endress, died in 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Nora Woods of Florence; a brother, Wilbur Evans of Ludlow; a sister, Helen McGarr of Covington; two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, with visitation will from 9 a.m. Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.

Allena Mary Frye, 83, of Covington, died at 2:30 a.m. Friday at her residence. She was retired from the former Pogue's Department Store, Cincinnati, and was a member of Latonia Christian Church. Her husband, Edgar Eugene Frye, died in 1974, and a son, Gary E. Frye, died in 1994.

Survivors include sons, William D. Frye of Hebron and Douglas Wayne Frye of Covington; sisters, Loraine McNay of Hebron and Almeda Hartman of Dry Ridge; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, with visitation from noon. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the Kidney Foundation, 2330 Victory Parkway East, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206.

Houston P. 'Ish' Ishmael, 78, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Ryland Heights, died Nov. 28 in Sarasota. He was a retired senior vice president of ATE Management and Service, Cincinnati, where he was a member of the board of directors.

He became involved with the transit industry as a bus driver in Northern Kentucky, and climbed through the ranks to become president of the American Public Transit Association, of which he was also a hall of fame member.

During his career, Mr. Ishmael managed transit systems in Allentown, Pa.; Denver; Memphis, Tenn.; and Louisville.

His wife, Kathy Galloway Ishmael, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons, Cliff Ishmael of Baltimore and Mike Ishmael of Clarksville, Tenn.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are suggested to the Leukemia Society of America, 13907 N. Dale Mabry Highway, Suite 101, Tampa, Fla. 33618. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling local arrangements.

LaVerne Emma Kidwell, 83, of Erlanger, died Thursday at her residence. She was a homemaker. Survivors include a son, Artie Kidwell of Erlanger; sisters, Dorothy Stewart of Florence and Ruth Tytko of Covington; and one grandchild.

Graveside services will be at noon Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger, with visitation at 10 a.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.

Edgar N. King, 74, of Covington, died at 2:10 p.m. Thursday at his residence. He was a retired heavy-equipment operator for Bavarian Trucking Co., Boone County; an Army veteran of World War II; and a member of Wilmington Baptist Church, Kenton County.

His wife, Sara Webster King, died in 1990. Survivors include sons, Joe King of Demossville and Eddie King of Warsaw; stepsons, Marshall Beach of Piner, Clifford Beach of Highland Heights, Henry Beach of Tennessee and Roy Beach of Connecticut; stepdaughters, Allena Jordan of Villa Hills, Ruby Vickers and Jennifer Hartman of Covington, Linda Hartman of Highland Heights and Cheryl Brown of Williamstown; sisters, Dorothy Sheriff and Flora Perkins, both of Williamstown, Georgie Works of Falmouth and Pansy Harris of Owenton; brothers, Robert King of Covington, Jackie King of Alexandria and Joe King of Falmouth; five grandchildren, 22 stepgrandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Monday at Hamilton-Stanely Funeral Home, Verona, with visitation at 10 a.m. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Matt Howard Lovett, 78, of Taylor Mill, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Charles E. McCaslin Jr., 79, of Hebron, died Monday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence. He was a retired inspector for International Harvester Co., Springfield, Ohio; an Army veteran of World War II; and a member of Melrose Lodge F&AM No. 671, Norwood, Ohio.

Survivors include a daughter, Patty Town of Hebron; stepsons, Ralph Osborne of Milford, Ohio, and Robert Osborne of Estes Park, Calif.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati, with visitation from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Hillside Chapel Cemetery, Cincinnati. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere-Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Betty E. McDaniel, 63, of Union, died at 3 p.m. Friday at her residence. She was a cook for Burns Brothers Truck Plaza, Florence, a Navy veteran and a member of Beech Grove Holiness Church, Burlington.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur McDaniel; sons, Arthur McDaniel Jr. of Florence and Chuck McDaniel of Clearfield, Pa.; daughters, Bobby Ritchie of Burlington, Cassie Foreman of Cincinnati and Karen Ellis of Erlanger; brothers, Charles Holton of Cincinnati, Russell Holton of the state of California and Herschel Holton of Indiana; a sister, Bertha Bailey of Harrison, Ohio; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Beech Grove Holiness Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Beech Grove Holiness Cemetery, Burlington.

Leona B. Myers, 94, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Wednesday at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.

She was a retired office worker for RKO Theater and a member of Maize Manor United Methodist Church; Order of Eastern Star, Minerva Chapter No. 101; Order of Amaranth, Pallas Court No. 13; North Star Shrine of the White Shrine of Jerusalem; Daughters of America Pride of Columbus No. 207; Northern Lights Social Club; and Polaris Club.

Her husband, Robert J. Myers, preceded her in death. Survivors include several cousins.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Southwick-Good Funeral Chapel, Columbus, Ohio. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Geneva Clifford O'Banion, 73, of Williamstown, died at 12:20 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County in Williamstown. She was a retired cosmetologist who operated shops in Dayton, Ohio, and Williamstown. She was a member of Williamstown Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Charles E. O'Banion; daughters, Charlene Sanders of Dry Ridge and Robin Adams of Williamstown; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, with visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Williamstown Baptist Church, 214 N. Main St., Williamstown, Ky. 41097.

Elizabeth Jacobs Robinson, 80, of West Chester, Ohio, formerly of Williamstown, died Friday at West Chester Health Care Center. She was a homemaker and a member of Newport Church of God, Newport.

Survivors include sons, Gene G. Robinson of San Antonio and Roy Robinson of Springdale, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, with visitation from noon. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Research Center, 231 Bethesda Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.

Elbert Raymond Staggs, 84, of Maysville, died at 11:15 p.m. Thursday at Maysville Extended Care Facility. He was a retired worker for January and Wood Co., Maysville. His wife, Edna Isabelle Wilson Staggs, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons, Robert Staggs and Raymond Staggs, both of Maysville, and Gene Staggs of Port Charlotte, Fla.; daughters, Ruby Fryman and Marilyn Holt of Maysville, and Debbie Arrasmith of Orangeburg; a brother, Wilson Staggs of Dayton, Ohio; sisters, Elizabeth White of Wallingford and Nancy Lundblad of Yakima, Wash.; 20 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville, with visitation from 6 p.m. today. Burial will be in Wedonia Cemetery, Wedonia.

Paul Edward Stone, 60, of Carrollton, died Thursday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Supplee Stone; a son, Michael Stone of Dekalb, Ill.; a daughter, Kathy Mackey of Holiday, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Gena Sullivan of Carrollton; a sister, Betty Nichols of Culberson, N.C.; a stepsister, Shirley Gamble of Indianapolis; stepbrothers, Lewis Gamble of Indianapolis and Johnny Gamble of the state of California; five grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Grahan-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton, with visitation from 10 a.m. The body will be cremated.

Donald K. Taylor, 71, of Erlanger, died at 12:04 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired histologist for University Hospital, Cincinnati, St. Luke Hospital West and the former Booth Hospital. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Lucas Taylor; a son, Gary Stephen Taylor of Villa Hills; a daughter, Janice Ann Hall of Hebron; a sister, Barbara Goldschmidt of Bethel, Ohio; and one grandchild.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere-Erlanger, is in charge.

Austin Lee Vest Sr., 75, of Walton, died Friday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence. He was a crane operator for Carlisle Construction Co., Wilder, and a member of Ohio Operating Engineers Union, Local No. 18.

His wife, Lillian Roberts Vest, died in 1994. Survivors include sons, Austin Lee Vest Jr. and John Burlin Vest of Walton; a daughter, Janet Marie Stallsworth of Florence; a brother, Bradford Piner of Cincinnati; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Big Bone Cemetery, Union.
