Kenneth Stuempel, Hall of Fame coach

Kenneth R. Stuempel, known to some as "Coach Ken," wasn't forgotten by the youngsters he encountered as a youth football coach.

"You were a key person among those who touched my life," Air Force Lt. Col. George Abernathy wrote Mr. Stuempel.

Mr. Stuempel, 56, of Erlanger, died Saturday in the St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington, of cancer. He was a retired insulator with Asbestos Workers Union Local No. 8, Cincinnati.

Mr. Stuempel helped organize the Boone County Pee Wee Football League, and coached a number of teams over the years, his wife, Patricia, said. "He spent a lot of time with the kids. He had many letters from former players telling him they appreciated what he had done for them," she said.

Abernathy of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, was among them. He mentioned how Mr. Stuempel encouraged him, and helped build his confidence.

Mr. Stuempel was a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame, in recognition of his work with youthful football players.

A graduate of Newport High School, where he participated in athletics, Mr. Stuempel at tended Georgetown College in his youth, but had to drop out, his wife said. Later in life he returned to school, at Northern Kentucky University, and earned a degree.

"He realized his dream," said Mrs. Stuempel.

Mr. Stuempel also coached freshman football at Lloyd Memorial, Ludlow and Ryle high schools. He played baseball in his younger years, and was a former member of the Erlanger Lions.

"He was just very good with kids, including mine. He was very, very close to them," said Mrs. Stuempel.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Cantrell Stuempel; a son, Ronald Brooks of Florence; a daughter, Joy Tanner of Erlanger; a sister, Diana Stamm of Villa Hills; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Entombment will be in Evergreen Mausoleum, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Lisa Stamm Memorial Scholarship Fund, Ludlow High School, 525 Elm St., Ludlow, Ky. 41016; or St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Marian Walz Buckingham, 73, of Dayton, died at 7:15 p.m. Friday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. She was a retired registered nurse with St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She also worked with Dr. Fred Stine's pediatrics office and with the Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a member of the Spears Hospital Nursing Alumni Association.

Survivors include her hus band, Jack Buckingham; a daughter, Karen Bettner of Cincinnati; sons, Jim Walz of Newport and John Walz of Bellevue; sisters, Jean Florio of Atlanta, Ruth Ann Bryan of Lake Worth, Fla., Shirley Dorn and Elaine McCarty, both of Cincinnati; a brother, James Winters of Pompano Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Marvin Carl Carpenter, 74, of Covington, died at 6:55 a.m. Sunday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home, Latonia. He was disabled.

Survivors include a cousin, Clara Babe Smiley of Covington.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence.

Chad Alan Clore, 20, of Union, died Friday at University Medical Center, Lexington, after being struck by a train in downtown Lexington. He was a student at the University of Kentucky, majoring in marketing, and a 1996 graduate of Ryle High School, where he played basket ball and golf.

Survivors include his parents, Kenneth A. and Judy Ann Clore of Union; a brother, Brad Clore of Union; and grandparents, Alice and Olive Clore of Burlington and Lloyd and Margaret Turner of Hyden.

Services were this morning at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial was in Burlington Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Burlington Baptist Church, 3031 Washington, Burlington, Ky. 41005.

Christine Ferrel, 94, of California, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a self-employed domestic worker and a member of Flagg Springs Baptist Church, where she taught a primary class. Her husband, Ben J. Ferrel, died in 1951. A daughter, Alice Faye Wil liams, died in 1992.

Survivors include a son, Carroll G. Ferrel of California; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be Grandview Cemetery, Mentor. Memorials are suggested to Flagg Springs Baptist Church, Flagg Springs, Ky. 41007.

Alma Gaines, 83, of Elsmere, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington.

Charles Landon Gill, 17 months, of Owenton, died Friday at his home.

Survivors include his parents, Charles Robert and Dana Traylor Gill of Owenton; a sister, Kendall Cochran of Owenton; grandparents, Bobby and Shirley Traylor of New Liberty, and Charles and Gayle Gill of Niceville, Fla.; and great-grandparents, Ethel Kincaid, Martha Traylor and Catherine Gill.

Services will be at 2 p.m. to day at McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary Street, Owenton. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Ow enton. Memorials are suggested to Together We Build, Owenton First Baptist Church, 213 N. Main St., Owenton, Ky. 40359.

Harry Kenneth Hamm Sr., 73, of Latonia, died at 6 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired inventory control worker with International Permalite, Florence, and a member of Community Pentecostal Church of God, Kenton County.

Survivors include his wife, Lauretta Welte Hamm; sons, Gary Hamm and Jonathon Hamm, both of Latonia, and Harry Kenneth Hamm Jr. of Covington; daughters, Kathy Patton of Cincinnati and Laurie Peace of London, England; a brother, Wendall Hamm of Fort Mitchell; sisters, Evelyn Eldred of Latonia and Laverne VanAuken of Independence; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Dolores A. "Dee" Janson, 98, of Fort Mitchell, died at 7 p.m. Friday at Florence Park Care Center, Burlington. She was a homemaker and a mem ber of the Gemma Guild and St. Mary Society of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Her husband, Bernard J. Janson, died in 1989.

Survivors include a daughter, LaVerne Rademacher of Lake side Park; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Helen Rose Bode Kite, 81, of Park Hills, died at 3:05 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a doctor's office manager and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of St. John. Her husband, Mark H. Kite, died in 1997.

Survivors include a son, Mark C. Kite of Park Hills; and three grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Tuesday at Mother of God Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Mae Marshall, 78, of Newport, died at 8:50 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thom as. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Edwin Marshall, died in 1964.

Survivors include a daughter, Lois Johnson of Silver Grove; sons, James Marshall and Robert Marshall, both of Newport; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are sug gested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45069. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Helen Margaret Merman, 87, of Bellevue, died Saturday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. She was a tailor with Leonard's Tailoring, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her great-niece, Debbie DuPont of Fort Thomas, who took care of Mrs. Herman; two nephews, and several other great-nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Church, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to St. Anthony Church, 320 Poplar St., Bellevue, Ky. 41073. Dobbl ing Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling arrangements.

Betty Arlene Moning, 68, of West Harrison, Ind., died Saturday at her son's home in Burlington. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her hus band, Patrick J. Moning; sons, Frank Holt of Denver and Steven Holt of Burlington; sisters, Edith Anderson of Charlotte, N.C., Eva Hale of Homosassa, Fla., and Nancy Kirby of Tampa, Fla.; brothers, Arnold Henegar of Oxford, Ohio, and William Henegar of Erlanger; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Kidney Foundation, 2330 Victory Parkway East, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206.

Phyllis Elizabeth Murphy, 68, of Florence, died at 6:11 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons, Kevin L. Murphy of Erlanger, Brian G. Murphy of Covington and Keith C. Murphy of Franklinton, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Prayers will be there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Children's Law Center, 9 E. 12th St., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Charles H. Murray, 75, of Erlanger, died Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Edith L. Baxter Owens, 82, of Highland Heights, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was an artist with Gold Crest Studios, Cincinnati, a member of Elsmere Baptist Church, and a former member of Bristow Chapter 31 Order of the Eastern Star.

Her husband, Richard F. Owens, died in 1997.

Survivors include daughters, Alma Byrd of Crittenden, Pat Emerson of Walton, Betty Jo Noble of Hazel and Dotty Pyle of Burlington; a son, Richard W. Owens of Burlington; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203; or to Elsmere Baptist Church, 250 Garvey Ave., Elsmere, Ky. 41018.

Elsie K. Laub Phillips, 88, of Highland Heights, died at 3:55 a.m. Sunday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Fred Phillips Jr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Fred E. Phillips III of Oldsmar, Fla.

Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4460 Lake Forest Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Ruth Perkins, 67, of Highland Heights, died at 5 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a bakery work er with the Thriftway grocery store in Newport. Her husband, Herbert Perkins, died in 1988.

Survivors include sons, Russell Dixon of Ludlow, Thomas Dixon of Bellevue, David Dixon and Jeff Dixon, both of Highland Heights, and Larry Dixon of Florence; sisters, Margie Gray of Las Vegas and Linda Robinson of Chillicothe, Ohio; brothers, Bud Caseman of Utah and Bill Caseman of Henderson; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Mary Elizabeth Lyons Quill-Imfeld, 92, of Fort Wright, died at 11:23 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired registered nurse with St. Luke Hospital and Western- Southern Life Insurance Co., Cincinnati, and was a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Her first husband, James E. Quill, died in 1958. Her second husband, A. Ferd Imfeld, died in 1990.

Survivors include sons, Rev. James E. Quill of Fort Wright and Kevin E. Quill of Fort Thomas; a daughter, Sally C. Quill of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ag nes Church. Visitation will begin there at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Agnes Church, 1680 Dixie Highway, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011; or American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219. Gus A. Rauch, 88, of California, died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. He was a retired truck driver with Alexandria Concrete and a farmer. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, California, a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters Court No. 1492 at the church.

His wife, Gertrude M. Rauch, died in 1995. Sons, Philip Rauch and John L. Rauch, died in 1979 and 1994, respectively.

Survivors include sons, Charles Rauch of Alexandria and Michael Rauch of California; a daughter, Mary Ries of California; sisters, Carolyn Gaukel and Anna Romito, both of Fort Thomas, and Leona Butsch of California; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sts. Peter and Paul Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, California. Memorials are suggested to Sts. Peter and Paul Building Fund, Route 2, Box 134, Califor nia, Ky. 41007; or Diocesan Catholic Children's Home, 75 Orphanage Road, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017.

Charles W. Sasher, 74, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. He was a farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Roseina Robinson Sasher; brothers, Ray Sasher, Robert Sasher and Allie Sasher, all of Cape Coral, Fla.; sisters, Ruby Hymer of Cape Coral, Faye Penny of Carrollton and Mildred Thompson of Muncie, Ind.; seven stepchildren, 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were this morning at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Earl Smith, 69, of Crittenden, died Friday at his home. He was a heavy-equipment operator.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Landrum Tungate Smith; sons, Bruce Smith of Amelia, Va., and Steve Smith of Dry Ridge; daughters, Amanda Smith of Crittenden and Sharon Rider of Dry Ridge; a brother, Clarence Smith of Amelia, Va.; sisters, Odell Gwynn of Pulaski, Va., Eva Elizabeth Stoling and Lilly May Miliner, both of Amelia, Va., and Christine Peters of Goochland, Va.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Little Flock Baptist Church, Amelia, Va. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Amelia Emergency Squad, Amelia, Va. 23002; or Goochland American Legion Post No. 215 Auxiliary, in care of Mary Ligon, 1285 Shallow Wells Road, Manakin-Sabat, Va. 23103. Evaline Loomis Sydnor, 76, of Martinsville, Ind., formerly of Grant County, died Friday at Morgan County Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. She was a retired seamstress with Beau Brummel Tie Manufacturing Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Sherman Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons, Billy Loomis of Martinsville, Ind., and Pete Loomis of Crittenden; brothers, Arthur R. Gordon of Sherman and Clifford Gordon of Williamstown; a sister, Dorothy Gayhart of Crittenden; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Arthritis Foundation, 7811 Laurel Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45243.

Anselm Babe Wagner, 75, of Latonia, died at 1:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired maintenance worker with Highlands High School, Fort Thomas, and was a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. He was a former maintenance director with the church, a member of the church Holy Name Society and choir, a member of the Knights of Columbus Carroll Council No. 702, a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, and a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Rosalia Wagner, died in 1980.

Survivors include sons, Dan Wagner of Latonia, Joseph A. Wagner of Union and Michael Wagner of Cincinnati; daughters, Tina Sims of Independence and Roseanne Kaiser of Cedar Grove, Ind.; a brother, Louis Wagner of Park Hills; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 tonight at Holy Cross Church. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Holy Cross Elementary School, 2617 Church St., Covington, Ky. 41015. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
