Florence's "Dottie' Cassini Spencer, popular waitress at old Caintuckee

Dorothy "Dottie" Darnell Cassini Spencer poured many cups of coffee and served many meals in more than 40 years as a waitress, and she did it all with a smile.

"She was always outgoing to customers. She was a very good waitress," said Vic Miller, who frequented the Caintuckee Restaurant, where Mrs. Spencer worked.

Mrs. Spencer, 84, of Florence, died Sunday in St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

She worked at the Caintuckee Restaurant for many years, until it closed in the late 1980s, and also worked at Ackley's Drive-In, across the street, her son, Ronald Cassini said.

"One of the sweetest and most down-to-earth people I ever knew," said Hilda Ramler, who operated the Caintuckee Restaurant. "When she heard about a customer who was sick, she always sent a card," Mrs. Ramler said.

"She was well-liked and had a good sense of humor. She was always very particular about her dress and appearance," Cassini said.

"She was one of the mainstays of the place," Miller said of the Caintuckee Restaurant, which was a gathering place for business people and political activists in Boone County. In fact, a large portion of Mrs. Spencer's life was spent at the Florence intersection where U.S. 42 and U.S. 25 split. She not only worked at the Caintuckee Restaurant and the drive-in across the street, which has been replaced by another restaurant, but in her latter years she lived at the Florence Christian Center, on another corner of the intersection, her son said.

In her retirement, Mrs. Spencer was a volunteer worker at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence, Cassini said.
