William Ellis Dobbs, tuned pianos

William Ellis Dobbs, a retired piano tuner and regulator with Baldwin Piano Co. in Cincinnati, died at 11:19 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. The Dayton resident was 82.

Mr. Dobbs grew up in St. Bernard, Ohio, and went to high school there even after he moved with his family to Covington, where his father got a job with a railroad company.

In 1941, he went into the Army and was stationed in North Africa, Italy and Germany during World War II. He enjoyed doing maintenance work on the airplanes that were flown in North Africa, said his son, Tom Dobbs of Villa Hills.

"He was a radio man on the P-38 Lightnings," Tom Dobbs said. "He loved airplanes."

Mr. Dobbs returned from the war in 1945 and took a job with Baldwin, where he worked until the late 1970s. He wasn't a trained musician, but he enjoyed music, his son said.

"He played piano a little bit. He just had a good ear for music," Tom Dobbs said.

Mr. Dobbs married his wife around 1945, and they had three sons, who were raised in Dayton. Ann Dobbs died in 1990.

Mr. Dobbs devoted himself to his children, particularly when it came to sports. He got them interested in baseball and regularly attended their athletic events.

A member of an Army basketball team, Mr. Dobbs loved sports and followed the Reds religiously. He became an avid Wildcats fan while his grandson attended the University of Kentucky.

Other survivors include sons, James Dobbs of Dayton and William Dobbs Jr. of Los Angeles; a brother, Chester Dobbs of Long Beach, Calif.; a sister, Ruby Rhodes of Cambridge, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Ruthe E. Ashcraft, 75, of Union, died at 10:08 p.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Chelce Ashcraft Jr., died in 1992. A son, Timothy Guy Ashcraft, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Chelce "Skip" C. Ashcraft III of Princeville, Ill.; a daughter, Margie Nyman of Union; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are suggested to A Cause For Pause, P. O. Box 5084, Peoria, Ill. 61607. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Louis Bell, 62, of Covington, died at 7:55 p.m. Wednesday in the emergency room of St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.

Alberta Neace Collins, 71, of Louisville, died at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday at Hospice of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. She was a homemaker and a member of White Dove Regular Baptist Church, Grant County. Her husband, Elbert Collins, died in 1966.

Survivors include a son, Thomas C. Collins of Louisville; brothers, Thomas Neace of Petersburg, Va., and Garrett Neace of Franklin, Ohio; and sisters, Vicie Ellen Hoskins of California, Ky., Sally Belle Collins of Williamstown, Canzallia Collins of Fairdale, Grace Wilson and Freda Wallace, both of Petersburg, Va.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Collins Family Cemetery, Chavies.

Albert T. Findley, 70, of Newport, died Tuesday at his home. He was a retired steel worker with Interlake Steel, Newport.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Findley; sons, Tom Findley of Covington and Steve Findley of Taylor Mill; a daughter, Rhonda Deaton of Falmouth; a sister, Alice Iles of Crescent Springs; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

James H. Ford, 57, of Crittenden, died at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Flannery Ford; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Carman of Louisville; his mother, Elizabeth Cox Ford of Stanton; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Scobee Funeral Home, Winchester. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Winchester Cemetery.

Phillip R. Liles Sr., 86, of Newport, died Tuesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a machinist with General Electric, Cincinnati, a member of Wilder VFW Post No. 8020 and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Pace Liles; sons, Phillip Liles Jr. and David Liles, both of Newport; a daughter, Patricia Liles of Southgate; brothers, Coy Liles of Leesburg, Fla., and Charles Liles of Everett, Pa.; a sister, Geneva Bowling of Newport; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Evergreen Mausoleum, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Florence Ellen Popp Maxwell, 83, of Florence, died at 1:05 a.m. Tuesday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Sand Run Baptist Church, Hebron. Her husband, Everett R. Maxwell Sr., died in 1987.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy M. Poole of Hebron; sons, Raymond Maxwell and Everett "Junior" R. Maxwell Jr., both of Hebron; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Cemetery.

Paul Ramsey, 67, of Florence, died at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired truck driver for Roadway Express, and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Anna F. Ramsey; a daughter, Paula Wermuth of Florence; sons, Mike Ramsey of Stamping Ground and David Ramsey of Georgetown; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Florence United Methodist Church, 7544 Dogwood Lane, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Margaret Shelton, 45, of Martinsville, Ohio, died Friday at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, of injuries suffered in an auto accident. She was an employee of American Showa in Blanchester, Ohio, and a member of Blanchester Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2222 Auxiliary. Her husband, William Lee Shelton, died in 1995.

Survivors include sons, John E. Shelton of Fort Thomas and Williams Scott Shelton of Hillsboro, Ohio; her parents, Charlie and Neola Watkins of Newport; brothers, Charles Watkins of Taylor Mill and John Watkins of Alexandria; sisters, Hurshene Pollitt of Brooksville, Hendalee Doane of West Palm Beach, Fla., Elizabeth Powers of Covington, Darlene Ward of Richmond, Marie Ward of Independence and Angela Watkins of Latonia; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are suggested to Blanchester Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2222, 118 S. Broadway St., Blanchester, Ohio 45107. Turner & Son Funeral Home, Hillsboro, is handling arrangements.

Bertha Washington Lucas Sparks, 82, of Brooksville, died Tuesday at Meadowview Regional Hospital, Maysville. She was a retail saleswoman with Pogue's Department Store, Cincinnati, and a member of Powersville Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Stanley Sparks Sr.; a son, Stanley Sparks Jr. of Brooksville; sisters, Velma Teegarden of Augusta, Irene Dawson of Alexandria, Ilene Todd of Brooksville and Patsy Rosenfeld of Cincinnati; two grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to charity.

Donald E. Stone, 67, of Florence, died Wednesday at his home. He was an accountant with Stone Tax Service, Florence, and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Jones Stone; a daughter, Jeanie Anderson of Crittenden; sons, Eddie Stone of Florence, Greg Stone of Warsaw, Mike Stone of Latonia, Rick Stone of Gastonia, N.C., and Robbie Stone of Walton; his mother, Marie Stone of Florence; brothers, Bill Stone of Florence, Earl Stone of Canton, Ohio, and Howard Stone of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 721 W. Main St., Suite 102, Louisville, Ky. 40202.

Ruth Turpin, 80, of Frankfort, formerly of Owenton, died Wednesday at Frankfort Regional Medical Center. She was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Hill Baptist Church, Owenton.

Survivors include sons, Jim Turpin of Frankfort and H. T. Turpin of Bainbridge, Ohio; a brother, Curtis Judy of Owenton; sisters, Dorothy Hawkins and Lucille Orsbourne, both of Owenton; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. Memorials are suggested to Cedar Hill Baptist Church, Highway 127 South, Owenton, Ky. 40359.

Stephanie Vaughn, 8, of Dayton, died Tuesday at her home after an extended illness. She was a first-grader at Russell Springs School in Russell Springs.

Survivors include her parents, Shelly Vaughn of Dayton and Jerry Padgett of Russell Springs; a brother, Jerry Vaughn of Dayton; grandparents, Alberta Soard of Covington, Jackie Vaughn of Somerset, and Jerry and Carolyn Padgett of Russell Springs; step-grandparents, Lois Vaughn of Somerset and Victor Soard of Covington; and a great-great-grandmother, Hannah McCarter of Newport.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Persimmon Grove Cemetery, Persimmon Grove.

Isabella Webb, 84, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
