Newport's Lt. James Bogart, loyal officer

James D. Bogart Jr. of Newport knew he'd found his calling when the U.S. Air Force made him a military policeman.

He went on to serve 20 years with the Newport Police Department before retiring as a lieutenant and taking a job in security at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

"He just always wanted to be a police officer," said a daughter, Pamela Neace of Newport. "It always was his dream."

Lt. Bogart died Monday night at the hospital. He was 61 years old.

A native of Newport, Lt. Bogart joined the Newport Police Department in the mid-1960s. One assignment during his two decades on the force was to head the traffic department.

"He was a good guy," Mrs. Neace said. "He was one of the best."
