Ronald D. Scalf, helped senior citizens

There wasn't anything Ronald D. Scalf couldn't do if he tried.

The Erlanger man taught himself how to renovate houses and fix plumbing, then he helped friends, neighbors and family fix up their homes. He taught himself how to cut hair, and then he gave free haircuts to the residents of a local nursing home.

He did odd jobs for his older neighbors, always making sure they were comfortable.

"My husband was a jack-of-all-trades," said his wife, Judith R. Baker Scalf. "He could cut hair, he could build a house, he could do anything.

"Ronnie never felt like there wasn't something he could do if he tried. That's the way he lived his life."

Mr. Scalf, 62, died at 12:20 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

He grew up in Barbersville and, as a teen-ager, moved to Cincinnati to find a job. He lived with his brother and worked various places, including a bakery and a foundry. He soon moved back to Kentucky, and he and his first wife had a son.

He married Judith Baker in 1983.

For 30 years, Mr. Scalf worked as a trucker. His last 11 years before retirement were spent with Overnite Transportation in Cincinnati.

When he wasn't working, Mr. Scalf volunteered. On Thursdays, he delivered meals to seniors in Florence, and on Mondays, he drove senior citizens in Ludlow to doctor appointments or any other place they needed to go.

As a member of the Erlanger Lions, Mr. Scalf helped run bingos and the group's annual eyesight drive for students at Erlanger and Elsmere schools. He cut residents' hair at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence.

In the winter, he frequently checked on his older neighbors, making sure they had food and heat. And at Christmas, he always bought something for one of his most needy neighbors - usually a gadget or hardware to fix something in the home.

"He was always upbeat, he was always happy, he was always working. He was never bored; he always had something to do," Mrs. Scalf said.

"He knew God had been good to him, and he tried to give back what he could.

"He was just one of a kind."
