Love for family filled heart of Bellevue's Walter Yelton

Walter E. Yelton's family was his life.

The lifelong Bellevue resident was a committed husband and father who kept busy participating in the lives of his two children. He also was a commanding figure for his grandchildren.

"They were his life, and later, his two grandchildren were his life," said Mr. Yelton's wife, Joan Wagner Yelton. "He was outgoing and easy to get along with."

Mr. Yelton, 73, died at 5:30 a.m. Thursday at his home.

The World War II veteran graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in business. He worked for a couple of companies before retiring from Hebrew Union College after 11 years.

He married his wife in 1951, and they raised their two children in Bellevue.

When his daughter, Wendy, took up an interest in volleyball, he began refereeing for her team. He continued refereeing for the Bellevue Vets' girls' volleyball team for about 30 years.

He also helped organize the annual Bellevue carnival.

Mr. Yelton enjoyed golfing and playing cards with friends in his free time.

"He was well-liked by everyone," his wife said.

He also was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Bellevue and Henry Barnes Masonic Lodge 607 in Dayton.

Besides his wife and daughter, Wendy Yelton Merman of Bellevue, Mr. Yelton leaves a son, Tim Yelton, of Southgate, and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to St. John United Church of Christ, Ward and Fairfield, Bellevue, Ky., 41073; or Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Ft. Thomas, Ky., 41075.

Carol Backer, 76, of Ryland Heights, died at 2:55 a.m. Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Highland Park Christian Church in Des Moines, Iowa.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Backer; sons, David Backer of Polk City, Iowa, and Dan Backer of Runnells, Iowa; daughters, Barbara Zeeks of Ryland Heights and Shirley McKinney of Covington; a brother, Dale Bonnett of Osceola, Iowa; sisters, Pauline Dubblestien of Otsego, Mich., Janice Modde and Betty Sharpe, both of Des Moines, JoAnn DeReus and Vera Lou Dooley, both of Newton, Iowa, and Pat Ancell of Norwalk, Iowa; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Des Moines. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Home-Health Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky., 41014.

Anna Beil, 73, of Edgewood, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Calvin Richard Cain, 76, of Georgetown, died Wednesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a retired farmer, a member of Grace Baptist Church of Georgetown, and a former member of Headquarters United Methodist Church, Cynthiana. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Inez Louella Preston Cain; and daughters, Eva Mae Day Burros, Sarah Ellen Cain, Wanda Faye Cain and Judy Louise Cain, all preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons, Richard Eugene Cain and Gary Lynn Cain, both of Harrison County; daughters, Mary Adams of Everett, Wash., Louella Mattox of Millington, Tenn., Linda Woosley of Cynthiana, Kathleen Joiner of Cochran, Ga., and Vickie Pedersen of Lexington; 29 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Headquarters United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, and from 1 p.m. Sunday until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in Kentontown Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Headquarters United Methodist Church.

Gertrude Reynolds Connors, 96, of Florence, died Wednesday at Florence Park Care Center in Florence. She was a retired secretary with a New York City charity, and an artist.

Survivors include nieces, Nancy Youtsey of Ft. Mitchell and Susan Douglas of Greenville, S.C.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Ft. Mitchell. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45203. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Goldie Orr Cotton, 87, of Walton, died at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at her residence, following a long illness.

Arrangements are Pending at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.

Thelma Elizabeth Egan Klare, 83, of Bellevue, died Thursday at her home. She was

a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph H. Klare; a son, Bill Klare of Independence; daughters, Rose Gross of Alexandria, Shirley Schmitz of Villa Hills, Betty Wietholter of Cold Spring and Peggy Schultz of Independence; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church. Visitation will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Belle vue. Prayers will be at 9:40 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Cincinnati Association for the Blind, 2045 Gilbert Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.

Madge Schmidt, 92, of, Latonia, died at 1:40 a.m. today at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home, Latonia.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Paul A. Turner, 55, of Burlington, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Thomas K. Wenz Sr., 77, of Augusta, died Thursday at his home. He was a retired farmer, and a member of St. Augustine Church, Augusta, the Knights of Columbus and Northern Kentucky Right to Life.

Survivors include his wife, Irma Dean McFarland Wenz; sons, Thomas Wenz Jr., Paul Wenz and Edward Wenz, all of Augusta; a daughter, Mary Ann Hiles of Augusta; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Augusta. Memorials are suggested to the Augusta Ministerial Association or the Bracken County Ministerial Association. Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta, is handling of arrangements.
