Gerald T. Fuller, trained others as Covington assistant fire chief

Gerald T. Fuller was known as a firefighter's firefighter.

He could eat smoke and fight blazes with the best Covington had to offer. He helped remodel firehouses to maximize space and efficiency. And he helped build the Covington firehouse training facility on Boron Drive.

"He went up through the ranks and was always a hard worker," said Covington Fire Chief Joe Heringhaus.

"His final years were as assistant chief in charge of training. He gave the knowledge that many guys know in fighting fires."

Mr. Fuller, 57, of Villa Hills, died at 5:35 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.

He retired as assistant chief with the Covington fire department in 1992 after 26 years of service. Mr. Fuller was a member of the Kentucky Retired Firefighters Association.

Mr. Fuller was born in Harrison County and spent most of his life in Covington. He and his wife, Patricia Fuller, were married for 18 years.

"He was always the type of guy who would lend a hand to someone else," Mrs. Fuller said. "He knew a little about everything and wasn't afraid to tackle anything."

Other survivors include his sons, Gerald Wayne Fuller of Taylor Mill and Bryan K. Fuller of Newport; daughters, Vickie Lynn Nagel of Taylor Mill and Karen Mitchell of Covington; a stepson, Michael Skeen of Covington; a stepdaughter, Deborah Skeen of Villa Hills; brothers, Rondall Fuller of Morning View, Wilbur Fuller of Elsmere and Ray Fuller of Florence; a sister, Dorothy McKnight of Hebron; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Scott Baxter, 24, of Dry Ridge, died at 2 a.m. Sunday in an auto accident on Rogers Road in southern Kenton County. He was a conductor with Southern Railroad and a member of Wilmington Baptist Church, Fiskburg.

Survivors include his wife, Tiffany Maxwell Baxter; a daughter, Kaitlyn Baxter of Verona; a son, Cody Baxter of Verona; his mother and stepfather, Linda and Steve Clark of Independence; his father and stepmother, Edward C. and Mitzie Baxter of Dry Ridge; sisters, Sarah Baxter of Independence and Renee Erwin of Oneida, Tenn.; and grandparents, Iva Louise Baxter of Independence, J. C. Baxter of Crittenden and Pearl Beighle of Owenton.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the children, Kaitlyn and Cody Baxter, in care of Grant County Deposit Bank, 106 N. Main St., Williamstown, 41097.

Ralph M. Beatty, 82, of Covington, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Lili K. Coghill, 54, of Carrollton, died Sunday at Norton Hospital, Louisville. She was a retired dairy worker, tobacco farmer and a former employee of Carrollton Cabinet Factory. She worked with Home-Aid Services with the Northern Kentucky Senior Citizens, and was a member of United Pentecostal Church, Carrollton.

Survivors include her husband, Paul J. Coghill; and sisters, Kay Kendall and Betty Puckett, both of Carrollton.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Pentecostal Church, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton, and from 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in English Cemetery.

Earl Cope, of Burlington, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Cope; and a son, Carl Cope of Burlington.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Lillian Duncan, 80, died at 3 a.m. today at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Martha Eloise Ellison, 72, of Covington, died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired legal secretary with Frost & Jacobs law firm, Cincinnati, and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia, and St. Anthony Fun Club, Taylor Mill.

Survivors include a brother, Tom McGlone of Ft. Mitchell; and a sister, Virginia "Ginny" McGlone of Covington.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Cross Church. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:40 a.m. Thursday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Herman L. Gifford, 81, of Cincinnati, formerly of Carlisle, died at 3:40 p.m. Friday at Ivy Woods Care Center in Cincinnati. He was a retired driver and salesman with City Bumper Co., Cincinnati, a member of Veterans Administration of Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Cora Pribble Gifford, died in 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Jackie Hundemer of Dayton; a son, Jerald L. Gifford of Dayton; sisters, Edna DeHart of Georgetown, Ohio, Mary Byrd of Florence and Elizabeth Mulligan of California; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be Baltimore Pike Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Vencare Hospice Palliative Care Center, 8135 Beechmont Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45255.

John Clifford Greene, 46, of Independence, died Sunday at his home. He was an X-ray technician with Anderson Mercy Hospital, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Martens Greene; a son, Christopher Greene of Salt Lake City; a daughter, Dawn Barber of McQuire Air Force Base, N.J.; a brother, Thomas Michael Green of San Antonio; sisters, Kate Shephard of Fullerton, Calif., and Louanne Maze of Mackinaw, Mich.; and a grandmother, Alice Welch of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Lu Cretia M. Hilger, 87, of Florence, died Saturday at Florence Park Care Center in Florence. She was a retired secretary with Indiana University, and a member of First Baptist Church in Bloomington and Erlanger Baptist Church. Her husband, Charles J. Hilger, died in 1957.

Survivors include sons, Greg Hilger of Guam and Philip Hilger of Pendleton, Ind.; a daughter, Brenda Hilger of Erlanger; a sister, Lynn Walker of Columbus, Ind.; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Erlanger Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Memorials are suggested to Boone County Adult Day Care, 7300 Woodspoint Drive, Florence, Ky. 41042. Day Mortuary, Bloomington, Ind., is handling arrangements.

Michael Ray Jackson, 16, of Dry Ridge, died at 2 a.m. Sunday in an auto accident on Rogers Road in southern Kenton County. He was a home-schooling student and a laborer with Bi-County Co-op.

Survivors include his parents, Cecil Ray Jackson and Peggy Jean Whalen Jackson, both of Dry Ridge; a brother, Jonathan Jackson, at home; a sister, Amber Jackson, at home; grandparents, Gilbert and Georgia Whalen of Dry Ridge, and James A. Jackson of Florence; and a great-grandmother, Eliza Walters of Latonia.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

George Patrick Kienzle, 78, of Erlanger, died at 2:50 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

He was a retired electrician with Siemens Corp., Cincinnati, a member of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662 in Newport, and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include sons, Barry G. Kienzle of Villa Hills and Martin A. Kienzle of St. Petersburg; daughters, Jennifer L. Kessans and Taryn M. Gedney, both of Florence, Teresa R. Bockhorst of Hebron, Christine K. McKenzie of Aurora, Colo., and Martina J. Kienzle of Taylor Mill; and 10 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to St. Henry Church, 3813 Dixie Highway, Elsmere, Ky. 41018.

Lloyd Lonningham, 67, of Covington, died at 6:36 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington.

James E. Ring, 85, of Cincinnati, formerly of Kentucky, died Monday at Mercy Anderson Hospital in Cincinnati. He was a retired inspector with Senco Products, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia E. Gallenstein Ring; sons, James D. Ring of Norwood, Ohio, John M. Ring and Jeffrey T. Ring, both of Cincinnati, and Joseph E. Ring of Newport; a brother, Herman Ring of the state of California; sisters, Margaret White of Foster, Virginia Pierce, Ruth Creighton and Mary Bailey, all of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Rose Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Memorials are suggested to St. Rose Church, 2501 Eastern Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202. George H. Rohde & Son Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Grace M. Shea, 71, of Ludlow, died at 5:48 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow, and Kehoe Council Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, and was a Girl Scout leader. Her husband, Clarence Shea, died in 1989.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Ellen Howard of Erlanger, Rosanne Shea and Melinda Shea, both of Ludlow, and Melissa Gudat of Loveland, Ohio; a brother, Paul Schmitz of Alexandria; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Boniface and James Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Home-Health Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Lula Katherine Cram Tilley, 79, of Latonia, died at 6:40 a.m. Monday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Nelson Tilley, died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, Nelson C. Tilley of Covington; a daughter, Jacqueline Meyer of Cincinnati; brothers, John Cram of Burlington and Leslie Cram of Independence; sisters, Georgia Brown of Walton and Bertie Glacken of Covington; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Dolores Wachs, 80, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died at 2:22 a.m. Monday at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Hugo Wachs, died in 1969.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Augustin of Cincinnati; sons, William Wachs of Covington and James Wachs of Whittier, Calif.; a sister, Georgianne McHale of Big Bone; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.

Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright.
