Burlington's Sylvia Smith, Boone teacher

Education played a leading role in the life of Sylvia Elouise Smith.

Not only did Mrs. Smith teach for 27 years, but she met her husband while they served as teachers.

Mrs. Smith, 57, of Burlington, died Sunday at her home.

She retired in 1990 as a teacher in the Boone County school system, and earlier in her career had taught in Williamstown and Falmouth.

"My mother taught home economics in high school. She met my father in Williamstown, where he taught music and special education," said Mrs. Smith's daughter, Rebecca Smith, of Burlington. Her father, Carl R. Smith, is also retired from the Boone County school system, she said.

A native of Berea, Mrs. Smith had degrees from Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky. In addition to her regular teaching positions, she also taught home economics in adult-education classes at Conner High School, her daughter said. She was a member of the Boone County Retired Teachers.

Students of her mother, and her father, kept in touch over the years, Rebecca Smith said. "Some are their neighbors, and others called to see how they were doing," she said.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Hebron Baptist Church, and Ohio Valley and Kentucky Walking Horse Association. "She always referred to herself as a "groom,' helping with the horses while my father and I showed," said her daughter.

Mrs. Smith's other hobbies included making wedding gowns and dresses for friends, her daughter said.

In addition to her husband and daughter, survivors include a sister, Freida Smith of Owenton.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bullittsburg Cemetery. Memorials are suggest to Hebron Baptist Church Building Fund, 1488 Petersburg Road, Hebron, Ky. 41048.

Ruth Marie Beagle, 92, of Newport, died Saturday at Wesley Hall Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a dressmaker for Levine and Sons Co., Cincinnati. Her husband, Roy Thomas Beagle, died in 1979.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen Church, Newport. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Rev. Alex Broughton, 76, of Latonia, died Sunday at his residence. He was a retired building manager for Ohio Building Services, Cincinnati. His wife, Ida Broughton, died in 1997.

Survivors include a stepson, Everett Burton of Covington; a stepdaughter, Helen Joyce Baudendistel of Burlington; a sister, Rita Boles of Barbourville; a brother, Rev. Ben Broughton of Barbourville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grand Avenue Church of God, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Covington. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Winston Clifford, 67, of Georgetown, formerly of Falmouth, died Saturday at her residence. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a sister, Thelma Downing of Lexington; and brothers, Kenneth Clifford of Cynthiana and Hanson P. Clifford of Lexington.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, Ky. 40504.

Beverly Gline, 55, of Burlington, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She worked for Duro Bag and was a member of Cornerstone Church of God, Florence.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Gline; a son, Thomas Gline Jr. of Burlington; a daughter, Terri Kittle of Florence; her mother and stepfather, Anna and C.L. Eggelston of Belleview; brothers, Butch Brunner of Burlington and Sam Eggelston of Norwood, Ohio; sisters, Jenny Collier and Adele Eggelston, both Belleview, and Yulenda Martin of Burlington; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Cornerstone Church of God, 7505 Sussex Drive, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Emma Kerlin, 85, of Covington, died at 1:45 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Kathleen King, 84, of Covington, died at 5:55 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Margaret Krebs, 93, of Ludlow, died at 3:40 a.m. Saturday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a retired beautician for McAlpin's. She was a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow; Ludlow Senior Citizens; and the Ladies Auxiliary of Knights of Columbus Kehoe Council, Ludlow. A son, Sam Krebs, died in 1995, and a daughter, Helen Tucker, died in 1991.

Survivors include seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Welcome House, 205 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Donald Raymond Lambert, of Newport, died Friday at Terrace View Gardens Nursing Home, Cincinnati. He was a retired brass cutter for American Scrap Co., Cincinnati. His wife, Lillian Lambert, died in 1996.

Survivors include daughters, Doris Sizemore of Newport, Betty Parsons of Parkersburg, W.Va., Delores Davis of Southpoint, Ohio, and Goldie Smith of Ohio; a son, Vernon Lambert of Parkersburg, W.Va.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 8 p.m. today at Church of God, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

James W. LaVelle, Jr., 68, of Chalk Bluff, Texas, formerly of Covington, died Friday at Providence Health Center in Waco, Texas. He was a retired Air Force veteran. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bellmead, Texas, and the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce LaVelle; a son, James W. LaVelle III of Dallas; his mother, Mary R. LaVelle of Covington; sisters, Rose Tumulty of Richmond, Va., and Joan Burkhardt of Covington; and brothers, John C. LaVelle of Lakeside Park and Edward J. LaVelle of Littleton, Colo.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home, Waco, Texas. The rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, with a memorial Mass at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the V.A. Medical Center Chapel, Waco. Burial will be in Rosemound Cemetery, Waco. Memorials are suggested to V.A. Medical Center Voluntary Services, 4800 Memorial Drive, Waco, Texas 76711.

Flora Mangold, 90, of Florence, died Saturday at her residence.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Betty C. Martin, 67, of Covington, died at 1:20 a.m. Friday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Covington.

Survivors include her husband, J. David Martin of Covington; a daughter, Tailitha Schulte of Park Hills; a son, Benjamin Workman III of Atlanta; stepdaughters, Stephanie Keller of San Francisco, Leslie Bales of Lexington and Laura Martin of Cincinnati; sisters, Shirley Toncray and Dorothy McFarland, both of Aberdeen, Ohio; a brother, Jim Collins of Orlando, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Covington. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Billie Mae Meyer, 74, of Union, died at 12:36 p.m. Friday at her residence. She was a retired mutual clerk for River Downs and Turfway Park. She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church and was a volunteer at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati.

Her husband, Julius Arlo Meyer, died in 1984. A son, David Meyer, died in 1980.

Survivors include sons, Allen J. Meyer of Florence and Marty L. Meyer of Union; daughters, Jackie Todhunter of Delhi, Ohio, Jenny Cooper of Union and Mary Dance of Independence; a brother, Harrison Ramsey of Delhi, Ohio; a sister, Mildred Shaw of El Monte, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin at noon today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Roscoe Stacy, 63, of Covington, died at 8:20 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a truck driver and dispatcher for Circle M. Survivors include his stepmother, Helen Rider Stacy of Covington; sons, Gary Stacy of Latonia, and Joe Stacy, Justin Stacy and Dustin Stacy, all of Oklahoma City; a daughter, Roxann Velez of Covington; a brother, James Stacy of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Eileen Baker of Memphis, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Cremation was at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

James O. Tritsch, 64, of Covington, died at 10:43 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired payroll supervisor for Cinergy Corp., Cincinnati. He was a member of Covington First Church of the Nazarene, Park Hills, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Greenwood Tritsch; daughters, Amy Hafner of Nixa, Mo., Julie Rice of Ft. Thomas and Lisa Connell of Union Township, Ohio; a sister, Betty Jo Furman of Covington; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Covington First Church of the Nazarene, Park Hills. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Northern Kentucky Leukemia Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C-6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Selena Dawn Tucker, 19, of Maysville, died Saturday at University Hospital, Cincinnati, as a result of injuries she suffered Friday in a motorcycle accident in Clermont County, Ohio. She was a farm laborer.

Survivors include her mother, Pauline Kirk of Maysville; a brother, Paul Edward Tucker of Maysville; and sisters, Tammy Chandler and Tina Hinton, both of Maysville.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Garden of Memories, Maysville.

Ramona Jean Williamson, 66, of Crestview Hills, died Thursday at her residence. She was a retired advertising word- processor for the Cincinnati Enquirer. She was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park, and Ohio Valley Quilt Guild, and she was a volunteer at Erlanger-Elsmere United Ministries. Her husband, Andrew Williamson, died in 1993.

Survivors include daughters, Lynne A. Fuller of Abingdon, Va., Karen L. Shiffler of Chardon, Ohio, and Gayle Williamson of Crestview Hills; her mother, Eva Crookshanks of Mentor, Ohio; sisters, Norine Ensign of Chardon Township, Ohio, and Vivien Tinner of Unionville, Ohio; brothers, Wayne Crookshanks of Concord, Ohio, Neil Crookshanks of Strongsville, Ohio, and Vern Crookshanks of Thompson Township, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park, with a reception following the service in the church fellowship hall. The body will be cremated at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Erlanger-Elsmere United Ministries, 525 Graves Ave., Erlanger, Ky. 41018. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
