Erlanger's John R. Thiel, truck driver

When John Russell Thiel wasn't driving trucks or working as an insurance salesman, he could be found on a golf course.

"He loved to play golf," said his wife, Evelyn Thiel. "He played as often as he could."

Mr. Thiel, who his wife said had friends "from everywhere," died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. The Erlanger man was 71.

He grew up in Erlanger and had a daughter, Sherry Lane Dillon, who now lives in Boston, with his first wife.

He married his second wife, Evelyn Thiel, in 1950 and the couple had a son, Greg Thiel of Erlanger.

Mr. Thiel supported his family for more than 20 years by driving trucks. He retired from Spector Trucking when he was about 57.

"He just wanted to be out of the trucking business a while," said his wife, whom he met while living in Virginia.

He sold insurance for about three or four years, until his health began to deteriorate.

Mr. Thiel enjoyed attending church on Sundays at Grace Baptist in Boone County. He also loved to talk, his wife said.

"He was a big talker," she said. He talked about "any and everything."

Mr. Thiel also was a member of Teamsters Local No. 100 in Cincinnati. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Besides his wife, daughter and son, other survivors include five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042; or American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright, Ky. 41011.

James T. Carr, 70, of Covington, died Monday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.

Florence Josephine Crout, 85, of Florence, died at 8:15 a.m. Sunday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker and attended Gathering Place Church, Florence. Her husband, Arthur Crout, died in 1995.

Survivors include sons, Kenneth A. Crout of Panama Beach, Fla., Norman E. Crout of Latonia and Walter R. Crout of Spokane, Wash.; and a daughter, Ruth M. Tibbetts of Spokane, Wash.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

Edward "Pert" Fisk, 73, of Independence, died at 4:47 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired truck driver with Edgcomb Metal Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Independence Lions Club Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423 Honor Guard, Elsmere, and Golden Rule Masonic Lodge, Covington.

Survivors include his wife, Emogene Hopperton Fisk; a son, Mark Fisk of Taylor Mill; a daughter, Marla Johnson of Crestview Hills; brothers, R. C. Fisk of Dry Ridge, Adrian Fisk of Lake Oswego, Ore., and Maurice D. Fisk of Cincinnati; sisters, Eulah Durr of Demossville, Beulah Pelley of Taylor Mill, Edith Redman of Morning View and Nina Hopperton of Dry Ridge; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Independence. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence.

Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Home-Health Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or the charity of the donor's choice.

Marian Penn Frommel, 82, of Cincinnati, died Saturday at her home. She was a registrar with the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, and a retired secretary with the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Board of Education.

She was a member of St. Rose Church in Cincinnati, the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen, the Ohio River Launch Club, United States Power Squadron and the Cincinnati Propeller Club.

Her husband, Marion Frommel, died in 1982.

Survivors include daughters, Donna Jean Hoffman of Ft. Thomas and Deborah Jo Wildeboer of Southgate; and three grandchildren.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Rose Church. Memorials are suggested to St. Rose Church, 2501 Eastern Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202; or College of Mount St. Joseph, 5710 Delhi Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45233. Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Gary R. Hunt, 47, of Carrollton, died Monday at Suburban Hospital, Louisville, after a long illness. He was a former machinist with Arvin-Sango Corp. in Madison, Ind., and a member of Pleasureville Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Wallace Hunt; daughters, Rachel E. Hunt and Sara R. Hunt, both at home; sisters, Thelma Lafferre of Louisville, Lynda Poynter of Eminence, Mary Carole Hall of Campbellsburg and Nina Colson of New Castle; and brothers, Gayle Hunt of New Castle, Ercill R. Hunt and Laymon Hunt, both of College Station, Texas.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.

Harold Jones, 37, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington.

Ruth H. DeCrane Mezera, 56, of Independence, died at 7:45 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was an activity director with St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

Survivors include her husband, George R. Mezera; a son, David Mezera of Dayton, Ohio; daughters, Jill Csillag of Dayton, Ohio, and Janelle Mezera of Independence; a sister, Pat Cowan of Wichita, Kan.; a brother, James DeCrane of Indianapolis; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Church of the Ascension in Kettering, Ohio. Mrs. Mezera's body was donated to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or Northern Kentucky Right to Life, 509 Scott St., Covington, Ky. 41011. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

George E. Miller, 60, of Owenton, died at Sunday at his home. He was a retired custodian from the Owen County Court House.

Survivors include his wife, Fannie Dunn Miller; a daughter, Jennifer L. Miller of Owenton; sons, George A. Miller and Johnny Miller, both of Owenton; sisters, Shirley Hartfield, Carole Ann Schafer and Donna Lee Brunner, all of Ft. Mitchell; brothers, Jerry Miller of Scott County and Jakey Miller; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rogers Funeral Home, Owenton. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Corinth Cemetery.

Bruce L. Mineer Jr., 71, of Clarkson, formerly of Williamstown, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday at his home. He was a retired employee of Keith Monument Co., Louisville, and a former employee of Louisville Catholic Cemetery. He also was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include daughters, Sue Cook of Cincinnati, Terry Williams of Glencoe and Nancy Covey of Crittenden; a son, Bobby Mineer of Inez; his former wife, Jennie Mineer of Louisville; stepdaughters, Sharon Lay of Louisville, Recie Hickman of Cincinnati and Shelby Peterson of Fargo, N.D.; a stepson, Luke Jones of Louisville; sisters, Anna Poynter of Flatwoods, Bonnie Boston of Louisville, Judy Boling of Russell and Gert Groce of Ashland; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Neurath & Underwood Funeral Home, Louisville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, and from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of services at Neurath & Underwood Funeral Home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Louisville.

Peter M. Mitchell, 73, of Dry Ridge, died today at his residence.

Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.

Julia Oppel, 93, of Erlanger, died Monday at Gardenview Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Louis Eugene Oppel, died in 1984.

Survivors include a daughter, Doris Newman of Erlanger; a sister, Marie Watkins of Lafayette, Ind.; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Evergreen cemetery Chapel, Louisville. Memorials: Gardenview Nursing Home, 3544 Washington Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Hazel Ashcraft Rumford, 87, of Augusta, died Saturday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a factory worker.

Her husband, Robert "Dick" Rumford, died in 1977.

Survivors include a sister, Edna Earl Ritchie of Cynthiana; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Burial will be in Powersville Cemetery, Brooksville.

Edward J. Sarsfield, 73, of Union, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired sheet-metal worker with the U.S. government, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a son, Joseph E. Sarsfield of Union; three grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials: to Northern Kentucky Baptist Church Building Fund, 2681 Turkeyfoot Road, Lakeside Park, Ky. 41017. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Loretta "Beenie" Wiegand, 81, of Highland Heights, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker, a member of St. Joseph Seniors Club, Cold Spring, and a past president of Newport Central Catholic Mother's Club.

A son, Gary Wiegand, died in 1992. Survivors include her husband, Arthur Wiegand; sons, Robert Wiegand of Highland Heights, James Wiegand of Philadelphia and Richard Wiegand of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Loretta "Bunny" Arszman of White Oak, Ohio; a brother, Edward Oelpman of Berea; a sister, Mary Beckman of Indianapolis; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Mausoleum, Ft. Thomas.
