Bromley's Archie D. Searp Sr.: First police chief a peacemaker

Archie D. Searp Sr. was Bromley's first police chief and also served his hometown as a firefighter and church deacon.

In 1917 his father, William Searp, was town marshal, which in the past was the highest- ranking police position.

Archie Searp Sr. also served as marshal, but assumed the title of police chief after the city grew in size and the police department was reorganized.

Searp Sr.'s son, Archie Searp Jr. of Ft. Mitchell, said his father was a compassionate, quiet man who knew everybody in the community. Searp Jr. served with his father as a part-time officer from 1979 to 1986.

"Dad's philosophy was always if there was any type of domestic abuse or a fight - or even young kids getting in minor-type mischief - his approach was always a very peaceful one.

"He was always trying to help the people he came in contact with be better people."

Mr. Searp died Sunday night at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 71.

Mr. Searp spent his entire life in Bromley, save for the years he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Searp was a tool expeditor, or machine operator, at Cincinnati Milacron.

He served on the police department for 28 years and the Bromley Fire Department for more than 20 years - rising in rank to assistant fire chief.

Mr. Searp was a deacon at the Bromley Christian Church.

He also was a member of the Boone Lake Fishing Club in Walton and the Bromley Vets and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Other survivors include his wife, Sylvia Moore Searp; daughters, Sharon Pohlman of Mason, Ohio, Carolyn Grinnan of Ludlow, Debbie Moore of Bromley, JoAnn Thompson of Bellevue and Tammy Mills of Edgewood; a brother, Elwood Searp of Bromley; and 18 grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bromley Christian Church.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home in Ludlow, with a Bromley Fire Department service at 7 p.m.

Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Bromley Christian Church, 216 Kenton St., Bromley, Ky. 41016.

kyGertrude F. Marshall Bohlinger, 83, of Ft. Mitchell, died at 11:47 p.m. Saturday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.

She was a homemaker and a member of Runyon Memorial Christian Church, Latonia, where she was a member of the Keystone Class.

She was an exercise instructor with Covington Senior Citizens, and a former YWCA reading instructor.

Her first husband, Woodsen Marshall, died in 1972. Her second husband, Walter B. Bohlinger, died in 1997.

Survivors include a son, Robert Gene Marshall of Ft. Mitchell; a brother, Joseph Gadker of Chillicothe, Ohio; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

James H. Bracke, 53, of Grapevine, Texas, died Saturday in Grapevine.

He was an employee of American Airlines, and a Marine Corps veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Bracke; a daughter, Lisa Severns of Grapevine, Texas; a son, Walter Bracke of Grapevine; a sister, JoAnn Kloeker of Independence; and a brother, Philip Bracke of Taylor Mill.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Blue Bonnet Funeral Home, Colleyville, Texas.

Memorials are suggested to the hospice of the donor's choice; or American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Edna Louise Caple, 76, of Hodgenville, formerly of Kenton County, died April 24 in Hamilton, Ohio.

She was a retired English teacher with LaRue County High School and a member of First Baptist Church, Hodgenville, and the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association.

Her husband, Clarence Caple, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a sister, Ruth Beerman of Hamilton, Ohio.

Graveside services were April 28 at Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Hodgenville, 200 S. Lincoln Blvd., Hodgenville, Ky. 42748.

Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, Hamilton, Ohio, is handling arrangements.

Jessie H. Baker Green, 64, of Louisville, formerly of Corbin, died Monday at her home.

She was a retired social worker with the Cumberland Valley Comprehensive Care Center, Corbin.

Survivors include daughters, Vickie L. Lane of Newport and Paula K. Green of Louisville; a son, Terry L. Green of Corbin; a sister, Susan Hampton of Corbin; a brother, Daniel Baker of Lexington; half-sisters, Jenny Adams, Patsy Smith, Eda May Woodard and Donna Campbell, all of Kentucky, and Linda Baker of Indiana; a half-brother, Howard Baker of Georgia; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Resthaven Funeral Home, Louisville.

Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Louisville.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Louisville, 3532 Ephraim McDowell Drive, Louisville, Ky. 40205.

Martha W. Kinduell, 83, of St. Louis, formerly of Lakeside Park, died Friday at her home.

She was a retired buyer for Pogue's and Shillito's department stores in Cincinnati, a member of the Northern Kentucky Heritage League and a volunteer at the Campbell Lodge Boys Home.

Her husband, C. Russell Stegner, died in 1976. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Russell Van Leunen of St. Louis; sisters, Ann Rosson of Frankfort and Nancy Matthews of Winter Park, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be in June in Kentucky. Bopp Chapel, Kirkwood, Mo., was in charge of arrangements.

Lucille C. Ruprecht, 78, of Crescent Springs, died at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at her home.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anne Ladies Society at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs, and St. Elizabeth Medical Center Volunteers.

Her husband, Frank Ruprecht, died in 1987.

Survivors include sons, Charles Ruprecht of Villa Hills, Frank Ken Ruprecht of Crescent Springs and Richard Ruprecht of Latonia; a sister, Thelma Tabeling of Edgewood; a brother, John Hufnagel of Owensboro; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs.

Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Middendorf- Bullock Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Florence F. Sturgil, 81, of Covington, died Monday at Franciscan Hospital Western Hills Campus, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
