Sister Mary Regula, orphanage worker

Sister Mary Regula, S.N.D., devoted her life to children and found that many remembered her after becoming adults.

Sister Mary Regula, formerly Christine Kordt, was born in Wattenscheid, Hontorp, Germany. She became a nun in Germany and moved to the United States in April 1937.

Sister Mary Regula was a former group mother at an orphanage in Vechta, Germany.

She spent many years at the St. Joseph Orphanage in Cold Spring and at St. Aloysius Orphanage in Cincinnati. Her later years were spent assisting in schools and in the Provincial House sewing room in Park Hills.

"She cared for children and had a real mother's heart," said Sister Mary Rose Paula, a colleague of Sister Mary Regula's in Park Hills.

Sister Mary Regula, 87, of Park Hills, died Sunday at St. Joseph Heights in Park Hills.

She enjoyed teaching young children and many called on her in later years, Sister Mary Rose Paula said. Sister Mary Regula had a sunny disposition, Sister Mary Rose Paula said.

"She kept in contact with the children and many of them had a deep respect for her," Sister Mary Rose Paula said.

"She was very warm-hearted and had a religious spirit."

Survivors include a sister, Gertrud Gall of Germany.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Provincial House, Park Hills. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at the provincial house. Burial will be at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the convent cemetery.

Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Donna Fern Allender, 64, of Foster, died Friday at Extendacare, Augusta. She was a homemaker and a member of Blanket Creek Baptist Church, Pendleton County. Her husband, John William "Dick" Allender, died in 1996.

Survivors include sons, Jerry Wayne Allender of Foster, John W. Allender Jr. of Cold Spring, Kenneth Dale Allender of Demossville, James Allen Allender of Alexandria and David Kent Allender of Corinth; daughters, Garnett Faye Townsend of Silver Bay, Minn., Peggy Ann Pulliam and Marian Kathleen Brock, both of Cynthiana, Rita Darlene Wells of Leesburg, Ga., and Mary Sue Allender of Silver Grove; a brother, Larry Florence of Falmouth; a sister, Lena Caswell of Marshalltown, Iowa; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery, Bracken County.

Evelyn Baker, 54, of Bellevue, died at 6:08 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, George Baker; a daughter, Lisa Parker of Woodlawn; a son, Gary Baker of Dayton; a sister, Lucille Russell of Dayton; brothers, Paul Campbell of Highland Heights, Elmer Campbell and Thomas Campbell, both of Alexandria; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Betty A. Black, 68, of Latonia, died at 3:40 a.m. Sunday at St. Charles Care Center, Ft. Wright. She was a homemaker. Her husband, James W. Black, died in 1987.

Survivors include sons, Dale G. Black of Edgewood and Daryl L. Black of Latonia; daughters, Kathy A. Black and Missie McElfresh, both of Latonia, and Christine Onkst of Hebron; brothers, Robert Hutsell of Latonia and Charles Hutsell of Taylor Mill; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Winona "Nonie" Boekley, 80, of Bellevue, died at 8:03 p.m. Friday at Highlands of Ft. Thomas nursing home in Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Tower Methodist Church, Bellevue, where she taught Sunday school. Her husband, John Boekley, died in 1969.

Survivors include a daughter, Nan Rae Kenney of Dale City, Va.; a son, John Boekley of Bellevue; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Hos pice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Beverly Curd Cate, 60, of Chattanooga, Tenn., formerly of Ludlow, died Saturday while visiting her daughter, Michele Hart, in San Francisco. She was a homemaker.

Other survivors include her husband, Cecil Cate; sons, Mark Cate of Houston and Mitchell Cate of Chattanooga; daughters, Mary Boyd and Molly Cate, both of Chattanooga; a brother, Michael Curd of Ludlow; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Jude Church, Chattanooga, Tenn. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Chattanooga. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling local arrangements.

Benita A. Cheslock, 43, of Burlington, died at 4:15 p.m. Saturday at Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a computer specialist with the Internal Revenue Service, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas E. Cheslock; a daughter, Krista L. Cheslock, at home; a son, Kevin T. Cheslock, at home; her mother, Kay Lehr Rehkamp of Erlanger; and a brother, Randy Rehkamp of Edgewood.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Hebron. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Benita A. Cheslock Memorial Fund, in care of Ms. Patty Kinman, Huntington Bank, 2252 Burlington Pike, Burlington, Ky. 41005.

Virgil C. Clark, 71, of Falmouth, died at 8:55 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a retired spray painter with Cincinnati Time Recorder Co. in Cincinnati and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Glenna Clark; sons, Kenneth Clark of Ludlow, Edward Ferguson and David Ferguson both of Falmouth; daughters, Michele Fields and Connie White, both of Ludlow, Sharon Arias of Houston, Brenda Barnhorst of Villa Hills and Alma Todl of Oceanside, Calif.; sisters, Willanna Clark of Ludlow and Norma Clark of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Elsie M. Crowe, 77, of Alexandria, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur Crowe; sons, Charlie Crowe of Alexandria, Arthur Crowe Jr. of Erlanger and Richard Crowe of Canan, Ind.; a sister, Myrtle West of Lexington; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Shriners Burns Institute, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.

Lance Davenport, 49, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Erlanger, died at 6:35 a.m. March 29 at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He was a retired employee of the C. W. Zumbiel Box Co., Norwood, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, Shirlee Cooper Davenport; a daughter, Holly Davenport of Bakersfield, Calif.; his parents, James and Edith Davenport of Williamsburg; brothers, George Davenport, Jim Davenport, Clarence Davenport, Danny Davenport and Charlie Davenport, all of Ohio; sisters, Ollie Mae Elliott of Ohio, Linda Sue Draper of Williamsburg and Sheila Scotts of Alabama; and one grandchild.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Greenview Baptist Church, Florence. Andrew Groves, 52, of Maysville, died at 9:56 p.m. Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. He was a construction worker and a member of Maysville Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his mother, Ruth Groves of Maysville; sisters, Edna Davenport, Mary Haley and Sue Davenport, all of Maysville; brothers, Charles Groves and Gary Groves, both of Maysville, and Bob Groves of Modesto, Calif.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.

Jean T. Stevens Hoffman, 70, of Ft. Thomas, died at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired bookkeeper with the Stevens Co., Cincinnati, a member of Christ Church United Church of Christ in Ft. Thomas, and treasurer of Highland High School Alumni Association. She was a past officer and member of the Sixth District Parent Teacher Association, and was active within the Ft. Thomas YMCA.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence G. Hoffman; a son, John T. Hoffman of Taylor Mill; her parents, William R. and Thelma Stevens of Ft. Thomas; and a brother, William R. Stevens Jr. of Venice, Fla.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Church United Church of Christ. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Christ Church United Church of Christ, 15 S. Ft. Thomas Ave., Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, is handling arrangements.

August Huss, 77, of Erlanger, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired industrial paper buyer with Diem and Wing, Cincinnati, a member of Florence Baptist Church, and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Huss; a son, John Huss of Ft. Wright; a daughter, Andrea Stringer of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Elizabeth Lorenz of Newport; a brother, Arthur Huss of Cincinnati; and one grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Edward F. Kelly, 78, of Latonia, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

George Elmer Mardis, 54, of Independence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a truck driver with Green Trucking Co., Latonia.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Trinkler Mardis; daughters, Wendy Mardis, at home, and Melody Nienaber of Crittenden; sons, Terry Mardis of Independence and Jeffrey Mardis of Taylor Mill; brothers, Earl Mardis of Visalia and Gary Mardis of Independence; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence, is handling arrangements.

Lula Deaton Morris, 77, of Newport, died Saturday at Franciscan Hospital, Mt. Airy Campus, in Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Russell Morris of Cincinnati; a brother, James Deaton of Newport; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Robert R. Thacker, 73, of Covington, died at 6:51 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired machinist with General Electric, Cincinnati, and a member of Latonia Baptist Church and United Auto Workers Union Local No. 674, Cincinnati. His wife, Victoria Mae Pullem Thacker, died in 1993.

Survivors include sons, Don Thacker of Latonia and Jim Thacker of Butler; daughters, Cynthia Rhodes of Ludlow and Martha Hengehold of Cincinnati; sisters, Alma Jane Hughes of Latonia and Billie Jean Baker of Burlington; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Gideons of Northern Kentucky, 24 Commonwealth Ave., Erlanger, Ky. 41018.

Silba Elizabeth Vest, 78, of Dry Ridge, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Dry Ridge. Her husband, John H. Vest, died in 1987. A daughters, Donna M. Moss, died in 1994. A son, John Wayne Vest, died in 1995.

Survivors include sons, James Vernon of Dry Ridge and Robert Dwight Vest of London, Ky.; daughters, Diane Marie McClane and Arla Dean Carter, both of Florence, and Doris Fay Wagner of Dry Ridge; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Clorris Ray Vickers, 54, of Burlington, died at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a truck driver with Sadler Brothers Trucking, Nashville, Tenn., and a member of American Legion Boone Post No. 4, Florence, and Boone-Union Masonic Lodge No. 304 F&AM, Union.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Weaver Vickers; a son, Raymond L. Vickers of Dry Ridge; a daughter, Lisa L. Brogan of Covington; his mother, Doris Noel of Bunnell, Fla.; sisters, Rita L. McKelvin of Bunnell, Fla., Frieda M. Slone of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Donna N. Waters of Louisburg, N.C.; a brother, Maurice W. Vickers of Bunnell, Fla.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Belleview Baptist Church, 6658 Fifth St., Burlington, Ky. 41005.

Robert Jeffrey Wiles, 46, of Ludlow, died at 2:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Survivors include a brother, Timothy Wiles of Jacksonville, Fla.

No services are planned. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright, Ky. 41011. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
