A. J. Stamper
Born August 31, 1854, A. J. Stamper passed away at his home in this city last Saturday, July 20th at the ripe old age of 85 years, 10 months and 19 days, after an illness of long duration, which had practically kept him confined to his home since the death of his wife, Mrs. Julia Stamper, 3 months and 3 days before him. He had been in failing health for over a year. He was born in Lewis county and reared there coming to Carter county he entered the mercantile business on Smoky and in Olive Hill, where he made quite a bit of money.
From there he engaged in the timber business of Red River and lost some of his money, and returning here he organized the Carter County Commercial Bank and was its president from the organization until it merged with the Peoples Bank a few years ago. He was always active in business and while a Democrat in politics he never sought an office, although at many times he was urged to become a candidate for State Auditor by his many friends, but he always declined saying he preferred to take care of his local business.
He leaves one son, Dennis Stamper of Grassy.

Parents of 14 children; Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Stafford, William Taylor, George Washington, James aMrion, [sic., Marion] Mrs. Fairlena Kidwell, Sylvania Raybourn, Joshua, Mrs. Highly [sic., Hiley] Adams, Miss Isadore, David Jonathan, deceased, Martha June Owens, Mary Alice Raybourn, Parthina Webster, survive him. At the age of 33 he married Mrs. Julia Enix and soon after they both united with the Christian Church and lived ever after in that faith.
His passing takes practically the last member of the famous Underwood war that still remains history in this county. He was one of the main men in this and was an instigator in bringing about the close of it. He sought no publicity but appreciated it; he attended strictly to business and his church work. He was one of the most faithful in his attendance and work of the church, and his passing will mean much to the church.
The body was taken from the home Monday to Christian church at 12:30 where it lay in state until 1:30 p.m. where funeral services were conducted by pastor, Rev. Orby Beard, in charge of the Henderson Funeral Home, after which it was taken to the Grayson Memorial cemetery and laid by the side of his wife.
