Elizabeth Wondrely, 'never met a stranger'

Elizabeth H. "Beth" Wondrely had a knack for making new friends and enchanting people.

"She was vivacious, " said Marjorie Simon of Fort Mitchell, a friend of Ms. Wondrely's family. "She always had an entourage. She had tons of friends."

Ms. Wondrely, 19, of Fort Wright, died Sunday night in an auto accident on Kyles Lane in Fort Wright.

She was a freshman at Northern Kentucky University and worked part time at a Subway restaurant in Crescent Springs.

Ms. Wondrely went to grade school at Blessed Sacrament School in Fort Mitchell and graduated last year from Beechwood High School in Fort Mitchell.

She was majoring in psychology at NKU and intended to become a counselor. She played violin when she was a little girl and continued to enjoy popular music.

Ms. Wondrely especially enjoyed getting to know people and talking with them.

"She never met a stranger, " said Simon. "She was very spontaneous and very friendly."

Ms. Wondrely had a soft spot in her heart for animals.

"She never encountered a stray that she didn't want to take in, " said Simon. "She got her pet dog, Axel, from the pound."

Survivors include her parents, Allen and Pat Wondrely of Fort Mitchell; and brothers, Michael Wondrely of Fort Mitchell and Jeffrey Wondrely of Chicago.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to the Diocesan Children's Home, 75 Orphanage Road, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Lorraine Brautigan, 73, of Covington, died at 6:50 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons, Norbert Brautigan of Highland Heights, Robert Brautigan and Paul Brautigan, both of Covington; daughters, Brenda Kramer of Burlington, Mary Ann Brautigan and Pauline Cooper, both of Taylor Mill, and Teresa Cooper of Covington; a brother, Harold Kelly of Muscle Shoals, Ala.; sisters, Pat Egan of Covington and Mary Burns of Lakeside Park; 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Carolyn P. Cioffi, 62, of Elsmere, died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was disabled.

Survivors include sons, Anthony J. Cioffi of Ashland and William Pfefferson of Danville; sisters, Nancy Dirkes of Alexandria and Peggy Thomas of Newport; brothers, Edward Brown and Paul Brown, both of Alexandria; and five grandchildren.

Services were this morning at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Ruth Elizabeth Clendenin, 89, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Florence Christian Church. Her husband, Arnold W. Clendenin, and a son, A.W. Clendenin, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Judy Black of Missouri, Virginia Hines of North Carolina and Ruth Bulmer of Florence; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Montgomery Memorial Cemetery, London, W.Va. Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday. Burial will be in Montgomery Memorial Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4460 Lake Forest Drive, Suite 236, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Helen B. Davis, 73, of Covington, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Mercy Western Hills Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Holland Davis; a son, Richard Owens of Cincinnati; daughters, Cindy Owens, Judy Owens and Lena Harmon, all of Covington; sisters, Ruth Purnell of Cincinnati, Dorothy Leggold of Tampa, Fla., and Mary Stith of Arkansas; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Leonard Hawkins, 87, of Florence, died Sunday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. He was a purchasing agent with Bartlett Pacific Co. His wife, Helen Louise Hawkins, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Lee Hawkins of Hattiesburg, Miss.; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Elsie Conway Imfeld, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Covington, died Saturday in Jacksonville. She was a former employee of Wright Aeronautical in Cincinnati, a member of Jacksonville Women's Club and a volunteer with Hope Haven Hospital and Pinecastle School, both in Jacksonville.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Imfeld; a daughter, Bonnie King; a son, Don Imfeld; brothers, Carl Conway and George Conway; and two granddaughters.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Church, Jacksonville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at George H. Hewell Funeral Home, Jacksonville. Burial will be in Arlington Park Cemetery, Jacksonville.

Ray Kennedy, 63, of Grants Lick, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a former employee of Early & Daniel Grain Co. and the Campbell County schools, and a member of Plum Creek Christian Church, Grants Lick, where he was a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, deacon and elder.

Surviving are his wife, Donna Kennedy; a daughter, Beverly Fess of Vermillion, Ohio; a son, Donald Kennedy of Butler; his stepmother, Mildred Kennedy of Burlington; a brother, Terry Kennedy of Grants Lick, sisters, Jeannette Kennedy of Alexandria and Regina Kennedy of Cold Spring; a stepsister, Pat Godsey of Wisconsin; stepbrothers, Alan Forsythe of New York and Stan Forsythe of Kentucky; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Plum Creek Christian Church, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Plum Creek Cemetery.

Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

George E. Mertle, 69, of Florence, died at 5:45 p.m. Friday at his home. He was a retired installer with Cincinnati Bell Telephone, and a member of Holy Spirit Church in Newport, the church Holy Name Society and Starlite Club.

Survivors include his wife, Christina Gish Mertle; daughters, Peggy Whitacre of Covington, Debbie Lorenz of Avondale, Ariz., Sharon Englehard of Alexandria and Theresa Mertle of Florence; sons, Ray Mertle of Taylor Mill, Paul Mertle of Erlanger and Gerard Mertle of Fort Thomas; his mother, Mary Mertle of Newport; a sister, Claire Ann LeDonne of Newport; a brother, Kenneth Mertle of Newport; and eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to the mental health organization of the donor's choice in Northern Kentucky. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Richard W. Parsons, 68, of Glencoe, died Saturday at Carroll County Hospital, Carrollton. He was a machinist with Keebler Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Donna R. Parsons; sons, Tony Ivey of Fairfield, Ohio, and Kevin Parsons of Glencoe; daughters, Bambi Combs of Sparta, Morrissa Parsons of Baytown, Texas, Kimberly Parsons and Tiffany Parsons, both of Glencoe; brothers, Robert Parsons, David Parsons and Rick Parsons, all of Parkersburg, W.Va.; sisters, Barbara McBride of Harrisville, W.Va., and Dottie Hayes of Williamstown, W.Va.; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation began there at 11 a.m. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Napoleon.

Alma Rhea Pelfrey, 73, of Alexandria, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Bill Pelfrey of Independence; daughters, Sue Bradbury of California, Debbie Talley of Independence and Sharon Gosney of Grants Lick; brothers, Willard Little of Germantown, Tenn., and Charles Little of Hebron; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Second Twelve Mile Baptist Church, Peach Grove. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Peach Grove Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home, Butler, is handling arrangements.

Stephen Emanuel Pelfrey, 83, of Crestview Hills, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired photographer with WISH television in Indianapolis and a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis. His wife, Ruth Marie Downs Pelfrey, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Sue Long of Oak Forest, Ill.; a son, Gary Stephen Pelfrey of Crestview Hills; and a granddaughter.

No services are planned.

Memorials are suggested to Faith United Presbyterian Church, 8170 Hague Road, Indianapolis, Ind. 46256.

Gloria Saylor Roaden, 78, of Park Hills, died Sunday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a retired employee of Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

Survivors include daughters, Linda J. Kaiser of Burlington, Laney Scherder of Union and Sandy Berger of Chicago; a sister, Rose Edwards of Covington; a brother, Floyd Saylor of Erlanger; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Rueben Sawyers, 98, of Hamilton, Ohio, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Saturday at his home. He was a retired engineer with Layne Ohio Drilling Co. and a member of Christ Chapel of the New Miami, Hamilton. His wife, Grace Stella Winkler, died in 1982. A son, Wilbur Sawyers, died in 1930.

Survivors include daughters, Gladys Smith of Hamilton and Marilyn Blaechle of Middletown, Ohio; a son, Donald R. Sawyers of Los Angeles; a brother, L.D. Sawyers of Hamilton; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Webb Noonan Funeral Home, Hamilton. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hamilton.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Thomas E. Tillery, 73, of Southgate, died Feb. 5 at Veterans Administration Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired salesman with Lincoln Mercury, Covington, a past commander of American Legion Post No. 69 and an Army veteran.

Survivors include sons, Tom Tillery of St. Petersburg, Fla., David Tillery of Tampa, Fla., Donald Tillery of Milford, Ohio, and Fred Tillery of Milford, Ohio; daughters, Barbara Tillery of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Tiffany Tillery, Savannah Tillery and Madison Tillery; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 6 p.m. Monday at the Office, Southgate. Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Lew Verna Voiles, 100, of Florence, died Sunday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Isaac Mitchell Voiles, died in 1967. Daughters, Verna Bernice Dehnert and Janus Voiles, and stepdaughters, Geneva Stephens and Juanita Daugherty, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Ann King of Verona, Francis Moore of Greensburg, Ind., Betty Adams of Springfield, Ohio, and Lou Crabtree of Fruit Port, Mich.; sons, Kenneth Voiles of Richmond, Ind., and Carroll Voiles of Indianapolis; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in West Point Cemetery, Liberty, Ind.

Jean Olivia Webb, of Dayton, was found dead Friday at her home. She was a tax examiner with the Internal Revenue Service in Covington and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Dayton. Her husband, Jackson P. Webb, and a son, Mark Webb, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Susannah Wermeling of Independence and Melanie Powers of Palo Alto, Calif.; a son, Oliver Webb of Fort Worth, Texas; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Dayton. Burial will be in Richwood Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church, 800 Ervin Terrace, Dayton, Ky. 41073.
