Urban Siegrist, played key role in Fort Wright

Urban J. Siegrist was a founding father of Fort Wright.

Mr. Siegrist, 87, of Fort Wright, died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

After the incorporation papers were signed in the basement of his house in 1941, he became the city's first town marshal and, later, the city's first police chief. He also was a charter member of the Fort Wright Civic Club and Fort Wright Fire Department.

"He was very much an outgoing person, and he really enjoyed seeing the city grow, " said his son, John T. Siegrist of Wexford, Pa.

Mr. Siegrist was part of a small group that built 100 homes in Fort Wright. When Covington officials tried to annex the neighborhood, Mr. Siegrist and a few others decided to incorporate the city.

He also was a superintendent with Heckett Engineering in Wilder and a member of St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright, where he served as an usher. He was an Army and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Other survivors include his wife, Johanna F. Geiman Siegrist; son, Anthony J. Siegrist of Villa Hills; daughters, Rose Ann Beckmeyer of Alexandria and Mary Lou Siegrist of Fort Wright; a brother, Edwin Siegrist of St. Peter, Ohio; a sister, Imelda Wilker of St. Marys, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. A reception in the church undercroft will follow Mass. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 333 Guthrie St., Suite 207, Louisville, Ky. 40202 or the charity of the donor's choice.

Donna Johnson Bowman, 62, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., formerly of Covington, died Friday at Alice Hospice, Nashville, Tenn. She was a secretary. Her husband, Charles Lee Bowman, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Richard Bowman of Covington and Anthony Bowman of Tampa, Fla.; daughters, Melinda Kelley of Tampa, Melissa Ross of Murfreesboro and Melody Bidwell of Corinth; her mother, Lena Johnson of Florence; a brother, John Johnson of Florence; sisters, Judy Ash of Erlanger and Connie Ely of Cincinnati; 14 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.

Bill Collins, 69, of Butler, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired employee of Powell Valve Co., Cincinnati, and a member of the Kentucky Softball Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Collins; daughters, Mona Spangler of Grants Lick and Tina Cunningham of Foster; sons, Bill Collins of California and Tim Collins of Alexandria; sisters, Bonnie Ashcraft of Alexandria, Margie Hendricks of Butler, Ruby Herringer and Ruth Cordell, both of Ohio; a brother, Jim Collins of Alexandria; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Jack Davidson, 52, of Burlington, died at 5:05 a.m. Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a maintenance manager with City Dash and a bass player with the Southern Image Band.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle David Davidson; daughters, Angela Davis of Covington, Carol Arlinghaus and Dede Davidson, both of Walton, Rhonda Picklesimer of Independence, Shonda Noell of Burlington, Jacky Courtney of Glencoe and Tonya Reindollar of Erlanger; brothers, Clyde Davidson of Alexandria and Henry Davidson of Independence; a sister, Donna Davidson of Florence; and 17 grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Virginia L. Faselt, 73, of Latonia, died Sunday at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Dale "Big D" Fuller, 38, of Morning View, died Thursday.

He was a welder for C&G; Welding Co., Williamsburg, Ohio.

Survivors include his mother, Doris Roaden Fuller of Morning View; brothers, Danny Fuller of Taylor Mill, and Billy Fuller and Marty Fuller, both of Morning View; and sisters, Sherry Ferguson of Morning View and Cindy Humphrey of Dry Ridge.

Services were this morning at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Burial was in Independence Cemetery, Independence.

Allen William Hale, 78, of Union, died Friday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence. He was a die maker with RVS Engraving and a welding instructor, and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Nora Elizabeth Hale; sons, Jeff Hale of Texas, Nick Hale of Cincinnati, Scott Hale of Rising Sun, Ind., and David Moffitt of Union; daughters, Meg Moffitt of Cincinnati and Teresa Moffitt of Atlanta; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Church of Christ, Burlington. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Gertrude Lenham Henson, 86, of Erlanger, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Latonia and Order of the Easter Star, Bradford Lodge in Independence. She was a former Girl Scouts leader, president of the Walton Homemakers, and president of the New Haven Elementary and Boone County Schools PTA's. She played with the Northern Kentucky Symphony, and was choir director at three area churches. She was an organist with Walton Christian Church and organist with Hickory Grove Baptist Church. She was also secretary with Oak Ridge Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughters, Ceryle Burk of Justin, Texas, and Nicole Henson of Covington; a granddaughter and seven great-grandsons.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Calvary Baptist School, 3711 Tibbatts St., Covington, Ky. 41015. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence, is handling arrangements.

Elena Mae Poteet Hoskins, 68, of Ryland Heights, died at 7:54 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Hoskins; sons, Jose Hensley of Taylor Mill, Darrell Hensley and Jimmy Klein, both of Ryland Heights; daughters, Frances Kleinmann of Cincinnati, Karen Boles of Covington, Marsha Hunt of Alexandria, A. Pauline Rassche of Independence and Margie Klein Davis of Taylor Mill; brothers, David York of Manchester and Paul York of Shelbyville; a sister, Eleanor Thomas of Dayton, Ohio; 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Paul Kirby, 63, of Covington, died at 2:29 p.m. Friday at Veterans Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired machinist with Cincinnati Tool Co. and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 762, Cincinnati.

Survivors include brothers, Carl Kirby of Florence, Douglas Kirby of Cincinnati and James Kirby of Goshen, Ohio; and a sister, Emma Jean Sturgill of Louisville.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45069.

Ruby Hamlin Matthews, 80, of Crittenden, died at 1:50 p.m. Saturday at Grant Manor Health Care Center, Williamstown. She was a retired secretary with Brunswick Corp., Cincinnati.

Survivors include sons, James E. Matthews of Crittenden and Grayson "Mac" Matthews of Williamsburg, Ohio; a daughter, Rebecca Lynn Nemke of Clearwater, Fla.; a brother, Louis Hamlin of Lexington; a sister, Connie Borden of Leavenworth, Ind.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, is handling arrangements.

Meredith Evelyn Pauley, 83, of Florence, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a manager with Cohen and Boggess pharmacies in West Virginia and a member of Greenview Baptist Church in Florence and Northern Kentucky Senior Citizens.

Survivors include sons, Paul Pauley of Edgewood, Larry Pauley of Wingate, N.C., and Fred Pauley of Charleston, W.Va.; and sisters, Elizabeth Phillips of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Nola Huffman of Roanoke, Va., Louise Bonham of Greer, S.C., and Carol Rollins of Crosslanes, W.Va.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Greenview Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the church. Burial will be in Elk Hills Cemetery, Big Chimney, W.Va.

Jack Gayle Poland, 70, of Warsaw, died Sunday at his home. He was a retired truck driver with Bellevue Sand and Gravel.

Survivors include daughters, Beverly Walz of Cincinnati and Constance Ginn of Hermitage, Tenn.; sons, Steve Poland of Carrollton, Jackie L. Poland of Warsaw and Bernie Poland of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; brothers, Curtis Poland of Homestead, Fla., Arthur Poland of Warsaw and Henry Poland of Atlanta; sisters, Alice Hendren Warsaw and Bertha Ogden of Florence; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carolton-Lowder Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.

Stephen Ray Raleigh, 38, of Verona, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a Marine Corps veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Merisa Sally Raleigh; a son, Stephen Raleigh II of Verona; his parents, Ray and Earlene May Raleigh of Verona; and sisters, Cosette Spille of Verona and Pamela Flischel of Florence.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are suggested to Stephen Raleigh II Trust Fund, U.S. Bank, 14973 Walton Verona Road, Verona, Ky. 41092. Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona, is handling arrangements.

Betty M. Reed, 76, of Fort Wright, died at 5:30 a.m. Friday at Lee Convalescent Nursing Home, Fort Myers, Fla. She was co-founder of B.J. Novelty Co., Covington, and a member of Latonia Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, John Reed; a son, Jeff Reed of Fort Wright; a daughter, Gwen Reed of Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Douglas Robinson of Edgewood; a sister, Norma Zaidan of Edgewood; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to American Lung Association, 1636 Nicholasville Road, Suite 1, Lexington, Ky. 40503.

Clyde J. Richardson, 74, of Hebron, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired truck driver with ABF Freight Systems, and a member of Boone-Union Masonic Lodge No. 304, American Legion Post No. 44 and Teamsters Union Local No. 100, Cincinnati. He was an Army veteran. A daughter, Nancy Richardson, died in 1956.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Richardson; sons, Mike Richardson of Hebron, Jay Richardson of Bright, Ind., and John Richardson of Edgewood; a sister, Dorsie Keltner of Wichita, Kan.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery, Wabash, Ind.

Jeanetta Lee Rowland, 69, of Belleview, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a cashier with Sky Chef, Frisch's and Prime and Wine, and was a member of Belleview Baptist Church. Her husband, Irvin Lee Rowland, died in 1994.

Survivors include a daughter, Connie Bettem of Independence; sons, David Rowland and James Lee Rowland, both of Belleview; sisters, Anna Wykert of Burlington and Alice Love of Rockville, Md.; brothers, Harvey Fields, Wayne Fields and Kenny Fields, all of Burlington, James Fields of Union, Finley Heborn and Richard Fields of Gainesville, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Belleview Cemetery.

Edward R. Shafer Jr., 85, of Latonia, died at 3:05 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a retired welding supervisor with Kirk & Blum Manufacturing Co., Norwood, Ohio, and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. He was a member of Bishop Mulloy Council Knights of Columbus and the American Welding Society.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Duve Shafer; a daughter, Peggy Chalk of Hebron; sons, Ed Shafer of Florence and Pat Shafer of Crestview Hills; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Tuesday at Holy Cross Church. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Holy Cross High School Shafer House, 3617 Church St., Covington, Ky. 41015. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Terrel Sluder Sr., 88, of Cincinnati, died Friday at Mercy St. Theresa Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a truck driver with Fry Brothers, Cincinnati, and a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Florence. His wife, Geneva Sluder, died in 2003.

Survivors include daughters, Nancy Sluder and Marion Counts, both of Cincinnati; sons, Charles A. Sluder of Erlanger and Terrel Sluder Jr. of Cincinnati; a sister, Eunice Taylor of Indianapolis; a brother, Ernest Sluder of Florence; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

James Valentine Smith, 80, of Alexandria, died Friday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. He was a retired employee of Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati, and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Smith, and a brother, Gordon Smith of Rockford, Ill.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Alexandria Cemetery. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Stella Smith, 81, of Alexandria, died Saturday at Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Franklin Smith, died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, Corbett Smith of Alexandria; a daughter, Pearlie Rahe of Cincinnati; a sister, Mattie Watts of Hazard; 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 5 p.m. today at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Peach Grove Cemetery.

Isaac Stephens, 81, of Owenton, died Friday at New Horizons Medical Center, Owenton.

Survivors include his wife, Lillard Henry Stephens; sons, Charles Lawrence Stephens of Independence, Dennis Stephens and Johnny Stephens, both of Covington, and Russell Stephens; a daughter, Laura Hollaway; a brother, Joe Stephens of Newport; a sister, Sarah Dunckley of Newport; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Owen County. McDonald & New Funeral Home, Owenton, is handling arrangements.

William Ray Turner, 44, of Crescent Springs, died at 9 a.m. Friday at his home. He was a truck driver and an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Turner; a daughter, Katherine Turner of Crescent Springs; a son, Daniel Turner of Southgate; brothers, Danny Turner of Pittsburgh and James Turner of Newport; sisters, Mary Clark and Mona Causey, both of Covington, Tracy Noble of Alexandria and Grace Ferdon of Bromley; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.

Edna B. Yelton, 88, of Independence, died Wednesday at her home.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, William L. Yelton, died in 1989.

Survivors include daughters, Joyce Bergfeld of Holland, Ohio, Judy Finnell of Port Orange, Fla., and Janice Marsh of Florence; a son, Donald Yelton of Erlanger; a sister, Lorraine Weber of Edgewood; a brother, Harold "Cliff" Metcalfe of Taylor Mill; 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Services were this morning at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
