Mary L. Lee, 95, led her family by example

Mary Lela Howard Lee had very high morals and passed them on to her children.

"You always worried about doing right, you know?" said her son, the Rev. Henry Don Lee of Falmouth. "She wasn't a tough disciplinarian, either. She led by example."

Maybe that's why three of the former Covington resident's four sons became ministers -- and the fourth reached the rank of colonel in the armed forces.

Mrs. Lee, who died Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington, took an interest in whatever her children were doing.

She was very active in the PTAs for the First District School and Third District School in Covington, her son said.

Her husband, Charles T. Lee, died in 1959, when most of their seven children were still living at home. She raised the family on her own then, working as a cashier at movie theaters -- the Liberty and the Madison in Covington among them.

She and her daughter, Helen Sue Schmidt, were inseparable until Schmidt's death from cancer in 1988. Mrs. Lee handled it very well, her son said.

"She kept the family together, she was great at that, " he said.

Mrs. Lee also was interested in politics. She was on the Covington City Commission during the 1960s and volunteered for the Kenton County Republican Party. She also served as a poll worker during elections.

She was a former Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Covington, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia. She was also a member of the Mayslick Order of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine of Jerusalem Covington Council No. 10.

She lived in Fort Mitchell for years before moving to Lexington.

Even in her last weeks, at age 95, she still had an exceptional memory. She could recite details about family members from long ago, as well as current events.

"I hope I have her genes, " her son said.

Other survivors include sons, Col. Edwin Lee of Bristol, Tenn., Rev. David Buckler Lee of Lexington and Rev. Billie Joe Lee of Richmond; daughters, Janice Marie Kittle of Glouster, Ohio, and Mary Elizabeth McAnnaw of Falmouth; 23 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
