Joann McCarthy, 71, was writing teacher

Joann McCarthy taught English, journalism and creative writing at Notre Dame Academy for more than 20 years.
"She was a great teacher, and several of her students won writing awards, " said her daughter, Monica McCarthy of Cincinnati.

Mrs. McCarthy, 71, of Covington, died Friday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.

She was a member of the board of directors of Catholic Social Services.

One of Mrs. McCarthy's former students is WLWT-TV news anchor Lisa Cooney.

"She was really big on education, " Monica McCarthy said of her mother. "She took students to Europe several times on educational trips."

Mrs. McCarthy loved to read and enjoyed taking beach vacations in Florida and Virginia.

"She was very quiet and preferred to keep her opinions to herself, " said her daughter. "She described herself as an introvert.

"She was a fantastic mother and a great friend. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. They were the apple of her eye."

Besides her daughter, other sur-vivors include sons, David McCarthy of Cincinnati and Joe McCarthy of Latonia; another daughter, Anne Varnum of Cincinnati; a brother, Dr. James Busse of Alexandria, Va.; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Linnemann Funeral Home in Erlanger and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center. Burial will be in Mother of God cemetery in Fort Wright.

Memorials are suggested to Kenton County Public Library, 502 Scott Blvd., Covington, Ky. 41011 or to Catholic Social Services, 3629 Church St., Cov-ington, Ky. 41015.

James "Wally" Bearse, 90, of Ryland Heights, died Saturday at his home. He was a retired auto body mechanic with Webber and Gall Auto Service, Newport, and a member of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662, Newport. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Pat Bearse; daughters, Mary Ellen Freyler of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Margaret Head of Batesville, Ind., Debbra Schreck of Florence and Diana Bearse of California; a son, James Bearse Jr. of Cincinnati; stepdaughters, Alta Jacob of Newport and Banita McAlister of Dayton; a stepson, Robert Miller of Covington; 23 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 10283 Decoursey Pike, Ryland Heights, Ky. 41015.

Paul E. Biddle, 85, of Kingsport, Tenn., formerly of Covington, died Thursday at his home. He was a retired service manager with Mosler Safe Co. and a member of Covington Lodge No. 109.

Survivors include his wife, Eugenia R. Biddle; a son, Paul Biddle of Maineville, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Shirley Mae Crabtree, 65, of Latonia, died at 11:30 p.m. Saturday at her home. She was a retired cabdriver.

Survivors include her husband, James Cecil Crabtree; sons, James Crabtree of Pinter, Greg Crabtree of Pennington Gap, Va., Randy Crabtree of Erlanger and Shawn Crabtree of Burlington; daughters, Lisa Van Hauen and Patricia Crabtree, both of Covington, and Angie Crabtree of Independence; brothers, Bud Zeeks of Covington, George Zeeks of Severn, Md., and Elmo Zeeks of Morrow, Ohio; sisters, Fifi Bishop of Pennington Gap, Lefa Johnson of Culpepper, Va., Lois Jones of Milford, Ohio, and Marie Forand of Latonia; 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Helen M. Easybuck, 94, of Erlanger, died Saturday at her home. Known as "The Cake Lady, " she was a homemaker and a member of Elsmere Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. Her husband, Lewis Marshall Easybuck, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Easybuck of Erlanger.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elsmere Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Minnie Garvey, 90, of Covington, died at 6:15 a.m. Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a retired clerk with Bockley Drug Store and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia.

Survivors include a sister, Ruth Taylor Dickerson of Warsaw; and brothers, Jerry Garvey of Warsaw and Kline Garvey of Florence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Poplar Grove Cemetery, Glencoe.

Loretta M. Hellmann, 98, of Park Hills, died at 3:10 p.m. Saturday at Villaspring Care Center, Erlanger. She was a homemaker and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. She was a member of the church's St. Mary's Ladies Society. Her husband, Clemens Hellmann, died in 1970. A son, Paul Hellmann, died in 1993.

Survivors include sons, Robert J. Hellmann of Liberty Township, Ohio, and Clemens F. Hellmann of Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughters, Rita F. Hellmann of Park Hills and Loretta Henderson of Fort Mitchell; brothers, William Fobbe of Covington and Charles Fobbe of Texas; 17 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Beverly Jo Janosick, 65, of Cold Spring, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Janosick; a daughter, Kimberly, of Ludlow; and three grandsons.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Gilbert H. "Gib" Mains, 87, of Falmouth, died Saturday at his home. He was a retired farmer, and a member of Oakland Christian Church and Hardin-Browning American Legion Post No. 109. A daughter, Bonnie Nichols, died in 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Wagner Mains; daughters, Betty Nichols and Becky Hardin, both of Falmouth; sons, Barry Mains of Falmouth and Bill Mains of Eaton, Ohio; a brother, Walter Mains of Williamstown; sisters, Mary Crouch, Hattie Dunn and Mable Souder, all of Dry Ridge; 10 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Pendleton County. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Drive, Maysville, Ky. 41056; or Hardin-Browning American Legion Post No. 109, Montjoy St., Falmouth, Ky. 41040.

Nedra Lynn Millar, 3, of Erlanger, died Friday at her home.

Survivors include her parents, John and Lori Millar; brothers, Nicholas Millar, Nolan Millar and Nathan Millar, all at home; a sister, Nicole Millar, at home; grandparents, Jack and Doris Ernest of Latonia, Rylynn Ernest of Piner and Gere Millar of Latonia; and great-grandmother, Jewell Hurley of Piner.

Services were Sunday at Covenant Christian Church, Newport. Burial was in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Nedra Millar Family Trust Fund, in care of any Bank of Kentucky branch. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Justine Neal, 80, of Owenton, died Sunday at New Horizons Medical Center, Owenton.

Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.

Edith V. Noel, 89, of Warsaw, died Saturday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. She was a homemaker and a member of Glencoe Baptist Church. Her husband, William Noel, died in 1983.

Survivors include a son, Charles Noel of Warsaw.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery.

Ashton Jacob Pidgeon, son of Heidi Pidgeon of Fort Mitchell, was stillborn at 11:45 a.m. Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.

Other survivors include a sister, Kirsten Vanover of Fort Mitchell; a brother, Tyler Vanover of Fort Mitchell; grandparents, Roger and Carla McKee of Ludlow and great-grandmother, Vera Eckler of Mary Esther, Fla.

Graveside services will be at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.

Janice Lynne Alton Pullman, 55, of Hattiesburg, Miss., formerly of Covington, died Thursday in Hattiesburg. She was a cancer research scientist with the Wood Hudson Cancer Center, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and Pacific Northwest Research Institute, both in Seattle, and was pursuing a doctorate in molecular biology at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Pullman; her mother, Myrle Alton Ashcraft of Covington; and brothers, Stephen Alton of Pickerington, Ohio, and Daryl Alton of Fort Mitchell.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Wood Hudson Cancer Research Center, 931 Isabella St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Darlene Rayborn, 61, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Dolores Sprengelmeier Struewing, 72, of Burlington, died Friday at Woodcrest Manor Care Center, Elsmere. She was a tax examiner with the Internal Revenue Service and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. She was a former member of the church choir, and was a former ward clerk with St. Elizabeth Medical Centers. Her husband, John Henry Struewing, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, John E. Struewing of Fort Mitchell, Robert R. Struewing of Burlington and Mike A. Struewing of Elsmere; daughters, Donna Coakley of Florence, Sharon Ann Wiseman of Villa Hills and Lora Lynn Armstrong of Burlington; a brother, Edward R. Sprengelmeier of Fort Mitchell; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Robert A. Szempruch, 64, of Independence, died at 1:02 a.m. Thursday at Veterans Administration Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a self-employed carrier driver and an Army veteran.

Survivors include sons, Daniel Szempruch, Timothy Szempruch, Christopher Szempruch and George Szempruch, all of Cincinnati; a daughter, Jackie Leugers of Cincinnati; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Agnes L. Hopkins Taylor, 70, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Fowler Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Independence.

Survivors include her husband, Frederick Taylor; daughters, Sharon Lee Jones of Florence, Brenda Joyce Wehrman and Anita Kay Barrett, both of Dry Ridge, and Wanda Gail McNees of Burlington; sons, Eddie Wayne Taylor of Park Hills, William Frederick Taylor of Butler and Danny Thomas Taylor of Florence; sisters, Fern Collett of Gridler, Joyce Mills and Ruby Hammonds, both of Barbourville, Edith Mills of Pasadena, Texas, and Dottie Mills of Danville, Ind.; 23 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hampton Funeral Home, Barbourville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Freewill Baptist Church, and from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hampton Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hopkins Family Cemetery, Barbourville. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.

Joseph Donald Wehby, 81, of Fort Thomas, died at 7:20 a.m. Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. He was a retired handicapper. A son, Jason Wehby, died in 2003.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Donovan Wehby; daughters, Pattie Donoghue of Wilmington, Del., and Karen Rabe of Fort Wright; sons, Joseph Wehby of Cincinnati, Mike Wehby of Fort Thomas and Tom Wehby of Woodlawn; sisters, Martha Sawma and Barbara Nerone, both of Cincinnati; and eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Holy Spirit School, 10 Chesapeake Ave., Newport, Ky. 41071.
