Grace Hyatt, loved family, UK Wildcats, travel

Grace Hyatt loved her family, the University of Kentucky Wildcats and travel, not always necessarily in that order.

"When the Wildcats were on TV, there was no doubt who was No. 1 in her heart, at least for those few hours, '' joked her daughter, Sheila Horstman of Cincinnati's Mt. Lookout.

"If they won, she'd be in a great mood the rest of the day. But if the 'Cats lost, you knew better than to call mom right after the game.''

Travel was another of Mrs. Hyatt's passions.

She delighted in recalling the trips that she and her husband, Douglas, took to 21 states -- a memory she punctuated by always holding up two fingers on one hand and one on the other to signal "21" while relating the many anecdotes from their travels.

"She was just in heaven making those trips, '' said June Delph, a close friend and the sister of Mrs. Hyatt's sister-in-law. "She and Doug loved being on the road.''

Most of her love, though, was reserved for her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter -- "my three sweet blondes, '' as she often called them. When her great-granddaughter, Alexandra Adams of Park Hills, Ky., was born 17 months ago, she said: "It's a gift to live to see something few people do.''

Mrs. Hyatt, a longtime Covington resident, died Friday. She was 85.

One of 10 children born on her family's farm in East Bernstadt in south-central Kentucky, Mrs. Hyatt as a youth was a talented runner who earned the nickname "The Red Racer" because of her long red hair.

Although she retained a lifelong love of "the country, '' returning there often to visit family, she was drawn to city life in Northern Kentucky in the 1940s and spent her final three decades in Covington.

In robust health for most of her adulthood, she took particular pride over having missed only seven days during her 30-year career with the Wadsworth Electric Co. in Covington.

In her spare time, she loved reading histories, ranging from contemporary politics to the Old West. "Her three biggest heroes were FDR, Truman and JFK, '' her daughter said.

Mrs. Hyatt also enjoyed decorating her home, and was constantly changing curtains, painting walls and rearranging the photos and the bric-a-brac that covered her tables and cabinets. "You never knew where things were going to be at mom's from one visit to the next, '' her daughter said.

Blessed with an incessantly positive outlook on life, Mrs. Hyatt seldom allowed adversities to cast a shadow over her sunny disposition.

"She always looked on the bright side and was always looking forward to the next neat thing she'd be doing, '' said Delph, who in recent years often took Mrs. Hyatt out for lunches that she called "my trips with June.''

"She never had a bad thing to say about anybody, ' her daughter added. "Nothing in life got her down.''

In addition to her daughter, granddaughter -- Kristen Adams of Park Hills -- and great-granddaughter, Mrs. Hyatt leaves three sisters, Doris Mullins of Covington, Pearl Hoskins of Cincinnati and Opal Marlow of Miami Beach, Fla.; one brother, Henry Patton of East Bernstadt, and two nieces she said were "like daughters, '' Diana Adams of Park Hills and Deborah Metz of Erlanger.

There will be a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the chapel at the Cincinnati Cremation Co., 525 W. Martin Luther King Drive, Clifton. There also will be a graveside service at a family cemetery in Laurel County on May 16.

Donations may be made to the AIDS Volunteers of Cincinnati (AVOC), 220 Findlay Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.

Ann Eppinghoff, quiet force behind husband

Ann B. Eppinghoff preferred to keep in the background, helping her husband run his advertising business, serving on church committees and typing out itineraries for road trips they took with friends in their retirement years.

Those who knew Mrs. Eppinghoff, though, knew she played a vital role behind the scenes, said a daughter, Paula Kleiman of Florence.

"I always used to say, my mother walked graciously behind my father -- 10 paces behind my father, " Mrs. Kleiman said. "But we all knew that, even though he was the big splash, she was behind him, prodding him along."

Mrs. Eppinghoff, of Florence, died Sunday at Woodspoint Care Center in Florence, her home for the past nine years. She was 92.

She was born and reared in the Cincinnati neighborhood of College Hill.

She helped her husband operate the business named after him, Charles L. Eppinghoff Advertising, for some 35 years in downtown Cincinnati. Most of their clients were shoe sellers.

Mrs. Kleiman said her parents worked hard to accomplish what they did.

"Neither one of them came from the richest of backgrounds, " she said. "So for both of them to have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and to have made a business as successful as his pleased them."

But Mrs. Kleiman said her parents thought more often of others than themselves.

"They were very community minded and always involved, " she said. "Church was very important to them."

After the Archdiocese of Cincinnati redistricted their College Hill parish in the 1960s, the spiritual home of the Eppinghoffs moved from St. Clare Church to St. Richard Church.

"They were very active there, " Mrs. Kleiman said.

After the Eppinghoffs retired, they traveled by car with friends all over the United States, on trips that last 30 to 40 days at a time, Mrs. Kleiman said.

Even at the end of her life, widowed, growing older and facing increasing health problems, Mrs. Eppinghoff set a quiet but powerful example, her daughter said.

Twelve years ago, after her husband died, Mrs. Eppinghoff moved to Florence, where she first lived in her own house, then in Mrs. Kleiman's home and, finally, Woodspoint.

"She had lost the ability to walk, and she just wanted to make sure she wasn't a burden to anybody, " Mrs. Kleiman said.

"She wanted to be around people, which was what the nursing home was able to provide her."

Mrs. Kleiman said her mother doted on her family, which included 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Again, "She didn't make a great big splash in the world, but she set an example to us of how to live out your golden years -- especially when your health is failing, " Mrs. Kleiman said.

Mrs. Eppinghoff is also survived by a second daughter, Betty Lehn of Osprey, Fla., and a son, Charles Eppinghoff Jr. of Louisville.
