Sister Mary Berenice, teacher and librarian

Sister Mary Berenice Byron taught for 27 years at six schools in Northern Kentucky and one in Danville before she retired from the classroom in 1968.

But instead of reducing her work, she started a new career as acquisition librarian at Thomas More College. She filled that post for 28 years before she retired in 1998.

"She really enjoyed her work at the college, " said Sister Andrea Collopy. "She made a lot of friends there."

Sister Byron died Tuesday at St. Walburg Monastery in Villa Hills. She was 84.

She finally had to retire from Thomas More because she was losing her sight. In her last years, Sister Byron was completely blind.

Since she loved to read, losing her sight was quite a blow, said Sister Collopy, but she was a very patient sufferer. She was a private person, yet she loved to have visitors.

Sister Byron was born in Louisville, one of 12 children. Her only sister, Catherine Berenice, died before Sister Byron entered the St. Walburg Monastery in 1938, so Sister Byron took her name.

Between 1941 and 1968, she taught children in every grade level, except for first grade, serving at Blessed Sacrament, Holy Cross, St. Henry, St. Joseph, St. Benedict and St. Francis Xavier schools locally and at Sts. Peter and St. Paul in Danville.
