Paul Douglas Dunaway, a 20-year Air Force veteran

As part of his 20 years of service in the U.S. Air Force, Paul Douglas Dunaway served as a crew chief for the Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team.
One morning in the 1950s he called in sick. That was the day a plane crashed, killing the entire flight crew.

Mr. Dunaway had decades more to live. He died Thursday at age 69 at his home in Crittenden.

The Irvine native joined the Air Force in 1952. He served during the Korean and Vietnam wars, and lived in Japan, England and bases all over the country.

While on leave in 1956, he visited his sister, Christine Starnes of Newport, and met one of her friends, Wanda Noel. After a one-month engagement, they were married June 2 of that year.

In 1964, he became one of the country's first kidney transplant patients, donating a kidney to his brother, the late Claude Dunaway.

After he retired from the Air Force, Mr. Dunaway became an officer with the Bellevue Police Department, the Florence Police Department and then the Elsmere Police Department.

While a police officer, he owned two gas stations, one in Erlanger at Commonwealth Avenue and Dixie Highway, and one at Industrial Road and U.S. 25 in Florence, now a car lot.

"He was a big car enthusiast, " said his son, Terry Dunaway of Burlington. "There was not a car he couldn't work on."

He ended his law enforcement career as chief of police for the Independence Police Department.

Near the end of his life, he worked at the Auto Zone store in Erlanger. He also sold vegetables and fruit at a roadside stand in Crittenden.

He gave lots of the produce away, his son said. "If he made a dollar out of the whole thing, he thought he was a millionaire, " he said.

Because of his gas stations and his law enforcement career, Mr. Dunaway became very widely known in Northern Kentucky, his son said.

"There was nowhere we could go that he didn't run into someone who knew him, " he said.
