Father Jerome Stern, minister in mountains

Although he grew up in Newport, Father Jerome F. Stern spent most of his life in southeastern Kentucky, ministering to the Roman Catholics of the mountains.

"I think he liked the challenge of the people, " said his brother, Joe Stern of Fairfax, Ohio. "He wasn't too much on the scenery."

Father Stern, who died Thursday at age 65, was born Feb. 17, 1939, in Covington to Joseph Francis and Matilda Imfloa Domaschko Stern.

As a child, he enjoyed fishing and painting figurines that he had molded from plaster of Paris. The Covington Latin School graduate didn't tell his brother much about his decision to become a priest.

"He said he was going, so away he went, " his brother said.

He entered St. Pius X Seminary in Erlanger in 1955 and continued his studies in 1957 at St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.

Bishop H. Richard Ackerman ordained Father Stern to the priesthood on June 1, 1963, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington.

From 1963 to 1970 and from 1971 to 1974, Father Stern served as an associate pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Corbin. In 1970, he served as an associate pastor at the cathedral in Covington.

He became administrator of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Pikeville in 1974, and in 1981 he became dean of the Mountain East Deanery of the Diocese of Covington.

He also served in parishes in London, East Bernstadt, Barbourville, Manchester and Middlesboro.

After a brief bout with cancer, he was taken to the Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Healthcare Hospital, where he lapsed into a coma. He never regained consciousness, and he died in his 65th year.
