William Arthur, loved baseball

As a Knothole Baseball coach, William B. Arthur got other coaches together on Saturdays to mow the grass at Elsmere's Fox Field so that it was playable for their sons' games.

Mowing the field was a tedious job done with small push mowers, but Arthur was happy to help out.

After the grass was cut, he dragged the infield dirt surface to make it smooth for the players.

"He was just that kind of person, " said his son Jim Arthur, 53, of Fort Thomas.

Mr. Arthur, 92, of Erlanger died at 6:35 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He coached baseball for more than 20 years and founded a Northern Kentucky umpires' association. During his playing days, he was renowned as a power hitter. He played briefly in the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league system.

"He loved baseball, that's for sure, " said another son Tom Arthur, 49, of Erlanger.

Mr. Arthur applied that same dedication and enthusiasm to other areas of his life.

While in the Army during World War II, he helped set up communications before seven major invasions. He was one of 500 troops sent to the Philippines in 1945 to liberate prisoners of war held by the Japanese after the Bataan died in 1989.

Survivors in addition to his sons include a daughter, Patty Hildebrand of Houston; a sister, Mildred Wordeman of Villa Hills; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the William B. Arthur Scholarship Fund, 3825 Dixie Highway, Elsmere, Ky. 41018.
