Nurse Dorothy Guess was ballroom dancer

Getting older didn't stop Dorothy M. "Dottie" Guess from continuing the work she loved or starting a new hobby.

She worked as a nurse until age 79 and, while in her 70s, learned how to dance so well that she competed in ballroom dancing contests.

"She was very driven, and she persevered, " said Mrs. Guess' daughter, Terry Setters of Morning View.

"She was vibrant and full of life."

Mrs. Guess, 81, of Independence, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice in Covington.

She began a long nursing career at hospitals in Northern Kentucky and later worked as a private nurse in Kentucky, Ohio and Florida.

"She especially enjoyed nursing when she went into private duty, " said Mrs. Setters. "She liked working with geriatrics and taking care of older people."

Dancing was something that Mrs. Guess didn't get around to until she was in her 70s.

"She had always wanted to learn to dance, but never had time when she was young, " said Mrs. Setters. "When she was in her 70s she decided to learn ballroom dancing. She really had a good time with it and became such a good dancer that she entered competitions."

Mrs. Guess was a member of Peoples Baptist Church in Clearwater, Fla.

Her hobbies included crafts and crocheting. She also enjoyed fishing.

"She was really friendly and enjoyed being with friends, " said Mrs. Setters. "She had unconditional love for everyone."

Mrs. Guess' husband, Paul Guess, preceded her in death.

Other survivors include sons, Ernie Finn of Melbourne, Fla., Frank Guess of Richmond, Va., and Kim Guess of Alexandria; daughters, Jo Ann Gallina of Huntsville, Ark., Donna Linus of Fayetteville, Ark., Mela Dee Scott of Independence, and Mona Williams of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; 21 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Swindler & Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth North Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Bertha Colston Baker, 86, of Independence, formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at Villa Springs Health Care Center, Erlanger.

Arrangements are pending at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

William Coomes, 61, of Archer, Fla., died Thursday at his residence. He was a computer programmer.

Survivors include a brother, Hugh R. Coomes of Independence; sisters, Helen Wilhelm-Olsen and Anne Coomes, both of Fort Thomas; and three nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen cemetery Chapel, Fort Thomas. There is no visitation. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling the arrangements.

Josephine Machowski, 86, of Fort Wright, died Wednesday at Villa Spring Health Care Center, Erlanger.

She was a retired assembly worker from the Schrader Co. and a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Machowski; a brother, Lenny Hydera of Erlanger; and sisters, Millie Hill of Forked River, N.J. and Jean Thomas of Manahawkin, N.J.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

George L. Marsh, 61, of Topeka, Kan., died Saturday at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

He was a sheet metal worker for 32 years and chairman of Sheet Metal Workers Local 77 for 22 years.

He was an Air Force veteran, a lifetime member of VFW Post 400, Topeka, and a volunteer for the VFW Medical Center in Topeka. He was president of Memadowark at New Boice Club, Topeka.

Surviving are his wife, Bert Marsh; sons, Dan Marsh and Rick Marsh, both of Lincoln, Neb.; daughters, Carry O'Braine and Piper Marsh, both of Lincoln; four stepdaughters;brothers, Jim Marsh, Don Marsh and Jerry Marsh, all of Independence, John Marsh and Terry Marsh, both of Florence, and Ron Marsh and Tom Marsh, both of Covington; sisters, Jean Miller of Ryland Heights, Becky Treadway of Erlanger, Shirley Hopkins and Alice Glass, both of Florence, Carol Maley of Covington and Darlene Terrell of Jacksonville, Fla.; two grandchildren and 12 step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at VFW Post 400 in Topeka. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home, Topeka.

Graveside services with military honors will be conducted in Treynor, Iowa.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Lyle "Shorty" Miller, 84, of Mount Olivet, died Thursday at Robertson County Health Care Facility. He was a retired State Department of Transportation employee, an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the Piqua Christian Church, Mount Olivet.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Mann Miller; brothers, Thelbert Miller and Dewey Miller, both of Mount Olivet; and a sister, Evelyn Anderson of Carlisle.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Robertson County Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Piqua Christian Church, Route 165, Mount Olivet, Ky. 41064; or Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Drive, Maysville, Ky. 41056.

Ruth Laura Mumm, 80, of Lakeside Park, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was retired from Fifth Third Bank, Cincinnati.

She was a member of St. Mark United Church of Christ, Latonia, and Fifth Third Bank's 25 Year Club.

Survivors include a brother, William H. Mumm of Lakeside Park and a nephew, David D. Mumm of Lakeside Park.

Services will be at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Kenton County Animal Shelter, 1020 Mary Laidley Drive, Covington, Ky. 41017; or Campbell Lodge, 150 Skyline Drive, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076.

Beverly Scothorn Presser, of Verona, died Thursday at her residence.

Arrangements are pending at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.
