Phyllis Schmitt, beloved nurse at St. Elizabeth

Phyllis M. Schmitt was used to getting hugs in public.

No matter where she went -- the grocery, the bank or anywhere -- people recognized her as the nurse who had treated them in the hospital, or who had cared for their fathers and mothers and other dying family members during their last days.

"People were constantly coming up and hugging her and thanking her, " said one of her daughters, Jennie Collins of Taylor Mill.

Ms. Schmitt, 66, of Latonia, died at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at Rhea Medical Center in Dayton, Tenn.

She had been a nurse for 39 years at St. Elizabeth Medical Centers, starting out in medical surgery and later coordinating the hospice program and managing the wound-care department.

Jennie Collins said her mother cared deeply about her patients and got to know them as individuals.

Once, during the holidays, she gave an elderly patient some money so he could buy Christmas presents for his grandchildren.

She also gave her home phone number to hospice patients, and they used it.

Often overwhelmed patients and their families would call her at odd hours to be treated or counseled about death and dying, her daughter said.

"Her hobby was taking care of people, " Ms. Collins said.

"She enjoyed the satisfaction it gave her when she saw she could help someone."

That feeling runs in the family. Ms. Schmitt's mother was a mid-wife in Campbell County, and Ms. Collins said her mother inspired her to become a nurse, first in the traveling nurse program and now in intensive care.

Ms. Schmitt liked to travel and often visited her daughter on her traveling nurse assignments.
