Vivian Krummen, nurse chose to care for family

Vivian Krummen gave up a career in surgical nursing to raise a family, but the stories she told convinced one of her daughters to follow in her footsteps.

The Florence woman died Sunday at St. Luke East Hospital in Fort Thomas after a long bout with cancer. She was 75.

"She definitely influenced my decision to become a nurse, " said her daughter, Kathleen Caffee of Louisville. "She told us stories about how she used to sharpen her own needles and cooked and served food for her patients. She was really devoted and made it sound like such great work."

Krummen graduated from Saint Elizabeth Nursing School in Covington in 1952 and took a job as a surgical nurse at the old St. Mary's Hospital on Gest Street in Cincinnati.

She married Eugene Krummen in July 1956, and she later gave the same devotion she brought to nursing to her kids when they came home from school.

She also could often be found in her garden at the family home on Sunnymede Drive in Fort Mitchell.

"She loved to garden; she was always planting something or digging something up, " said another daughter, Julie Martin of Erlanger. "She was also a giver. She wouldn't let you leave the house unless you took something with you."
