Frank Koplyay, escaped Soviet Union in 1956

Frank M. Koplyay's life spanned two continents and a revolution.

Born in Budapest to a career military officer in the Hungarian Army, Mr. Koplyay escaped to the United States in 1956 as the Soviet Union crushed an anti-communist rebellion in Hungary and hunted down those with ties to the Hungarian Army.

He settled for the final 33 years of his life in Edgewood, where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mechanical engineer.

Mr. Koplyay died of congestive heart failure Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. He was 77.

With Soviet troops and tanks roaming the countryside in 1956 after the failed bid for freedom, Mr. Koplyay and his future wife, Antonia Anna Koplyay, trekked across the countryside in 1956 and made it safely to Austria, where they were granted political asylum.

He and his family "had to leave everything they knew and they couldn't tell a soul, " said Koplyay's son, Stephen Koplyay, 43, of Edgewood.

They made their way to the United States under the sponsorship of Koplyay's brother, who had emigrated to America in the 1940s.

"What they left didn't offer them much hope, " said Stephen Kopplyay.

His son said the strict and rigid side of his father's personality was instilled during his years in military school in Budapest. That training and fastidiousness came in handy when Mr. Koplyay started looking for work in the United States. He found a job with an engineering firm in Salem, Ill., and earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering. A series of different engineering jobs brought him to Northern Kentucky, where he started working for the Postal Service in the mid-1970s.

His work was instrumental in the drafting and design of machinery for the Bulk Mail Center in Sharonville, Ohio.

"He had the personality for that, " said Stephen Koplyay. "He was very meticulous -- everything had to be a certain way."

Mr. Koplyay retired in 1992, but continued to pursue his interests in amateur radio and computers. He also remained an active parishioner of St. Pius X Church, where he regularly attended monthly fish fries with his wife.

"He would talk with anyone, " his son remembered. "Sometimes I had to remind him it's a different generation and you don't just talk to strangers."

It was after church Oct. 3 that Mr. Koplyay began to feel faint.

"He was very big on family, " said Stephen Koplyay, whose two daughters spent most Saturdays with their grandparents. "He really loved them."
