LaVerne Rogers, raised 8 children

After 12 years of marriage, LaVerne Lokesak Rogers divorced an abusive husband who wouldn't pay child support and had to raise eight children on her own.

She worked double shifts troubleshooting problems with phone lines for Cincinnati Bell, working eight hours, coming home for two, then working eight more hours, said her second husband, John W. Rogers of Highland Heights.

"It was unbelievable, " he said. "And she never complained."

Mrs. Rogers, 77, who died Tuesday, was born in St. Louis, but moved to Ludlow when she was a child.

Growing up, she worked at Hinke's, the Ludlow grocery store her mother had started.

During World War II she worked as a civilian secretary to an Army general in Long Island, N.Y.

She worked for Cincinnati Bell for 21 years, retiring in 1980.

Mrs. Rogers was a very intelligent woman who enjoyed doing anything that challenged her mind, her husband said.

She was a member of St. Ann Church in Covington and the Telephone Pioneers.

Other survivors include sons, Jim Lokesak of Florence, John "Jack" Lokesak of Park Hills, Albert Lokesak of Walton, David Lokesak of Burlington and Tom Lokesak of Florence, Ind.; stepsons, John Rogers II of Florence, Christopher Rogers of Fisher, Ind., and David Rogers of Columbus, Ga.; daughters, Gregor Rogers Clack of Indianapolis, Debbie Gabbard of Ludlow, Ann Adcock and Teri Quatemeyer, both of Florence; sisters, Margie Fairchild and Audrey Metzger, both of Florence; 25 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann Church, Covington.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Louise Ibeck Armstrong, 92, of Taylor Mill, died at 6:32 a.m. Thursday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia.

She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia.

Her husband, Orville Armstrong, died in 1998.

Survivors include sons, Steven Wallace Armstrong of Erlanger, Lee Orville Armstrong of San Diego, Timothy Paul Armstrong of New York and Kenneth Wayne Armstrong of Edgewood; a daughter, Judith Armstrong Meyer of Edgewood; nine grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Church.

Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.

Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Earl A. Davis, 68, of Burlington, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

He was an employee of Muskingham River Ohio Power Plant and a member of Watertown, Ohio, Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Burlington, Mount Moriah Masonic Lodge No. 37, Mount Moriah Order of the Eastern Star No. 506, Rufus Putnam Chapter No. 108 and the Marietta Ohio York Rite Bodies Council No. 78 and Commandery No. 50.

He was a Marine Corps veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Davis; sons, Robert Davis of Watertown, Ohio, and Brian Davis of Batavia, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

A memorial open house will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Darlington Farms Community Club House, Burlington.

Memorials are suggested to American Red Cross, 401 Fourth St., Marietta, Ohio 45750.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington, is handling arrangements.

Tonya M. Harney, 31, of Villa Hills, died Wednesday at her home.

She was a former employee of Cincinnati Bell Telephone and a member of Crossroads Community Church in Oakley, Ohio, and Telephone Pioneers.

Survivors include a daughter, Madelyn Harney, at home; her parents, Edward Thomas and Jacki O'Banion Harney of Villa Hills; a brother, Matthew Harney of Erlanger; a sister, Tracy Harney of Latonia; and grandparents, Jack O'Banion of Crescent Springs, and Dixie and Herschel Roach of Villa Hills.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Madelyn Harney Education Fund, in care of any Fifth Third Bank.

John W. McCoy, 88, of Covington, died at 5:03 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

He was a retired, self-employed repairman and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include sons, James McCoy and Timothy McCoy, both of Covington, and David McCoy of Missouri; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.

Burette P. "Chubb" Shriver, 84, of Southgate, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Newport.

Her husband, Wayne Shriver, died in 1982.

There are no immediate survivors.

Services will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport.

Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Cremation will be at Fares J. Radel Crematory, Cincinnati.

Memorials are suggested to Baptist Convalescent Center, 120 Main St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Doris Velma Spegal, 88, of Demossville, died Wednesday at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.
