Harold Ray Clayton, disability no handicap

Harold Ray Clayton lost a leg when he was hit by a car when he was 9 years old, but he didn't let it deter him from going on to a successful career as a designer and builder of many Northern Kentucky churches.

"He got the nickname 'Spunky' as a boy because of the way he handled his loss, " said Mr. Clayton's daughter, Danita Rae Powell of Union. "He never considered himself handicapped."

Mr. Clayton, 74, of Independence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

He was a general contractor and owner of Compass Construction Co. He was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, attended Southern Seminary in Louisville and graduated from Georgetown College in 1955.

"My dad used his talents to serve the Lord through building, " said his daughter. "Building churches was his way of serving God."

Mr. Clayton's wife of 48 years, Sara Clayton, said her husband was "gentle, gifted, generous and quick-witted."

"He was creative, " she said. "He had a talent for building. He would do the drawings as well as oversee construction.

"He was of strong faith and very family oriented."

Other survivors include sons, Douglas H. Clayton of Crittenden, Duane H. Clayton of Trophy Club, Texas, and Dwight H. Clayton of Independence; sisters, Dorothy Strady of Covington and Sharon R. Blank of Fort Wright; and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Hickory Grove Baptist Church Family Life Center, 11969 Taylor Mill Road, Independence, Ky. 41051.

Ronald S. Alford, 66, of Independence, died Saturday at Woodcrest Manor, Erlanger.

He was a former mechanic with Settle Service and a deacon and choir director with Northern Kentucky Baptist Church, Lakeside Park. He was an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Finney Alford; a son, David Alford of Florence; daughters, Pam Foy of Selma, N.C., and Patty Bracken of Union; a sister, Phyllis Jeffries of Loveland, Ohio; a brother, Frank Alford of Goshen, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Northern Kentucky Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Northern Kentucky Baptist Church Building Fund, 2681 Turkeyfoot Road, Lakeside Park, Ky. 41017.

Minnie Dearborn Caldwell, 102, of Erlanger, died Sunday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. Her husband, Roy Caldwell, died in 1966.

Survivors include sons, Joe Caldwell of Falmouth and Robert Caldwell of Cincinnati; daughters, Linda Mullins of Hebron, Catherine Bowen of Demossville and Iris Young of Elizabethtown; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Gardnersville Cemetery.

Harry Clinton Chinn, 91, of Germantown, died Friday at Augusta Health Care Center. He was a retired farmer and tobacco buyer with Liggett & Meyers Tobacco, and a member of the Mason County Livestock Association, Mason County Extension County and Germantown Christian Church, where he was Sunday school superintendent. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Stroud Chinn; a son, James R. Chinn of Germantown; a brother, Raymond Chinn of Germantown; four grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Germantown Christian Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown, and from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

John David Creekmore, 40, of Bellevue, died Friday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue.

Ricky Dallas, 48, of Williamstown, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden.

Ira Thomas Franklin, 85, of Cynthiana, died Friday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a retired employee of 3M Co., a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and American Legion Post No. 165. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline L. Franklin; daughters, Sharon James of Dayton, Ohio, and Jacqueline Custard of Bellevue, Neb.; a son, George Ferguson of Los Angeles; brothers, Estill Franklin of Paris and William E. Franklin of Augusta; sisters, Mollie White, Virginia Logan and Sara King, all of Lexington, and Mary McLemore of Dayton, Ohio; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Burial will be in Cherry Grove Cemetery, Harrison County.

William Keith "Billy" Godman, 51, of Harrison County, died Sunday at his home. He was an employee of T1 Automotive and a member of Milford Christian Church. He also attended Unity Christian Church, Harrison County.

Survivors include his wife, Donna McVey Godman; sons, Bryan Keith Godman of Richmond and Derrick Wayne Godman of Lexington; his mother, Marjorie Turner Godman of Milford; a brother, Charles Godman of Brooksville; and a sister, Janet K. Fields of Falmouth.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.

DeLaVerne "Dee Dee" Hammond, 41, of Highland Heights, died Thursday at her home.

She was disabled.

Survivors include a son, Steve Hammond of Covington; her father, William Hampe of Aurora, Ill.; her stepfather, Thomas Hammond of Highland Heights; brothers, Edward Hammond of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Thomas Hammond of Fort Wright, Brian Foster of Leeds, Ala., and Joseph Hampe of Burlington, Wis.; sisters, Andrea Christi of Hot Springs, Ark., Patricia Willen of Walton, Yolanda Cole of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Linda McKenzie of Southgate and Candy Foster of Dayton; and grandmothers, Karoline Hampe of Naperville, Ill., and Beulah Hiate of Newport.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Rick Harrison, 39, of Alexandria, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a food service worker and a member of Fairlane Baptist Church.

Survivors include his father, Roy Harrison of Alexandria, and a sister, Debi Allen of Roysten, Ga.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Elizabeth Hartje, 81, of Ryland Heights, died Saturday at Mary Rose Mission in Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.

Virginia Katherine Hause, 79, of Brooksville, died Sunday in an automobile accident on Ky. 19 just north of Brooksville.

She was a volunteer with Augusta Health Care and a member of Powersville Christian Church.

Her husband, Walter Wesley Hause, died in 1987.

Survivors include cousins.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Donald Clay Henry, 63, of Newport, died at 1:10 a.m. Saturday at his daughter's home in Cincinnati.

He was a mechanic and owner of Don's Garage.

Survivors include sons, Richard Henry of Newport and Joe Henry of Covington; daughters, Christine Bauer of Southgate, Kathy Claire of Alexandria, Donna Goldstein of Cincinnati and Amy Henry of Burlington; sisters, Shirley Charles of Brookville, Ind., Janice Sexton of Waco and Dorothy Bowling of Dayton; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Highland Hills Baptist Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery, Irvin. Memorials are suggested to Childrens Home of Northern Kentucky, 200 Home Road, Covington, Ky. 41011; or American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042. Eugene Jordan, 71, of Blanchester, Ohio, formerly of Independence, died Saturday at his home.

He was a retired machinist with R.A. Jones Co., Erlanger, and an Army veteran. His wife, Lottie Mummert Jordan, died in 1993.

Survivors include sons, Elvin "George" Jordan of Latonia and Mitchell Jordan of Blanchester; daughters, Stella Egan of Falmouth, Karen Webster of Gardnersville and Donna Chipman of Erlanger; brothers, Norman Jordan of Hamilton, Ohio, and Jack Jordan of Portage, Mich.; sisters, Betty Leopold and Anita Palmer, both of Blotcher, Ind., and Mary Goforth of Eva, Ala.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Nathan E. Northcutt, 79, of Florence, died Sunday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.

Thelma Jean Oaks, 67, of Demossville, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown.

Survivors include her husband, Wilbur Oaks; sons, Gregory Oaks and Michael Oaks, both of Pendleton County; a daughter, Melissa Bruin of Pendleton County; brothers, Ed Oaks, Charles Oaks and Sam Oaks, both of Michigan, Junior Oaks of Hazard and John Oaks of Cincinnati; sisters, Eudell Johnson of Michigan, and Helen Atkins and Golden Moore, both of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Gardnersville Cemetery.

Stanley A. Platek, 83, of Edgewood, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a consulting engineer with and partner with Elliston-Hall-McAllister and Stockwell, Cincinnati.

He was a member of Summit Hills Country Club.

Survivors include a son, Frank Platek of Independence; a daughter, Vicki Rose of Edgewood; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 10901 Reed Hartman Highway, Suite 202, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.

Shirley A. Pruitt, 69, of Fort Mitchell, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a factory worker with Owens-Illinois Co., Florence, and a member of the Camp Springs VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, William Pruitt; daughters, Patricia Davidson and Sylvia Davidson, both of Cincinnati, Seattle Williams of Edgewood, Sherry Davidson of Fort Mitchell and Diana Geyer of Brooksville; sons, Larry Davidson of West Chester, Ohio, Oliver Davidson of Brooksville and Estill Davidson of Bellevue; brothers, Michael Holley and Burkley Holley, both of West Virginia, and Buddy Holley of Ohio; sisters, Rita Lefevers of Alabama and Yvonne Ball of West Virginia; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Frank "Bud" Pund, 84, of Taylor Mill, died at 1:50 p.m. Friday at Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati.

He was a retired employee of E.W. Buschman Co. in Cincinnati, and a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia and the Irish Rovers at St. Patrick Church in Taylor Mill.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Angela Schaefer Pund; a daughter, Karen Ryan of Lebanon, Ohio; a brother, Donald Pund of Warner Robbins, Ga.; a sister, Dorothy Robertson of Elsmere; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Church, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Karen Rabe, 51, of Covington, died Saturday at Veterans Administration Hospital, Cincinnati.

Lorraine D. Rabenold, 70, of Florence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Ruth Reynolds, 85, of Verona, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph Reynolds; daughters, Lori Hopkins of Verona and Ralene Reynolds of Denver; sons, Jack Reynolds of El Dorado, Mo., Ted Reynolds of Des Moines, Iowa, and Greg Reynolds of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and five grandchildren.

No services are planned. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona, is handling arrangements.

Charles L. Roberts, 78, of Erlanger, died at 4 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a processor with John Morrell Meats in Cincinnati and a deacon at Lakeside Christian Church, Lakeside Park. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Hicks Roberts; a daughter, Pam Crawford of Villa Hills; stepdaughters, Jan Smith of Lakeside Park and Nancy Scroggins of West Carrollton, Ohio; a brother, Harry Roberts of Ludlow; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Lakeside Christian Church, Lakeside Park. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Lakeside Christian Church, 195 Buttermilk Pike, Lakeside Park, Ky. 41017. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Bradley C. Sandy, 67, of Covington, died Friday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere. He was disabled.

Survivors include daughters, Christina Erion and Corinne Sandy, both of Covington; a son, David Sandy of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington, is handling arrangements.

Margo Darlene Sanzenbacker, 60, of Bellevue, died Friday at her home.

She was a housekeeper with Northern Kentucky University, the Amos Shinkle House Bed and Breakfast in Covington and the Weller House Bed and Breakfast in Bellevue.

She was a member of St. Anthony Church in Bellevue, and was a bingo worker at the church.

A son, Joseph Sanzenbacker, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Mark Sanzenbacker of Hebron; a daughter, Tina Horsley of Milford, Ohio; brothers, Roy Douglas Brown, Donald Brown and Robert Brown, all of Cincinnati; sisters, Sharon Smith, Connie Spence and Becky Hicks, all of Cincinnati; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Thomas Wulfeck, 74, of Fort Mitchell, died Sunday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.

Jane York, 89, of Morning View, died Sunday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.

She was a member of Crittenden Christian Church.

Her husband, Ralph York, died in 1977. Sons, Robert Joseph York and Ralph W. York Jr., also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a sister, Helen Brown of Butler; and nieces.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Walton Christian Church. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to Crittenden Christian Church, 106 N. Main St., Crittenden, Ky. 41030; or Walton Christian Church, 50 S. Main St., Walton, Ky. 41094. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton, is handling arrangements.
