Daniel Davis, left letter for his unborn child

Dying of cancer of the esophagus, Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Daniel M. Davis wanted to see his unborn child.

With no time to schedule a hospital ultrasound, his wife, Heather, went to the Greater Cincinnati Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Services clinic in Wilder Saturday where her brother, Josh Nassano, works.

Using the veterinary ultrasound equipment, they took 25 pictures of the baby in utero and learned it was a boy.

Only one problem -- all the photos identify the baby as a large dog.

"We're calling the baby our big dog, " Heather Davis said, laughing.

They showed the pictures to Daniel Davis the same day, along with some baby clothes that his wife had bought.

He saw pictures of his son sucking his thumb.

His wife told him that things were not looking good, and asked him if he wanted to write a letter to the baby.

"Well, how long do I got?" he replied.

"He was so stubborn. He was convinced he was going to kick this cancer, " she said. But she persuaded him that he ought to get it written anyway, even if death were months away.

And so on Saturday he wrote:

To My Child:
I may never meet you, but you've been my inspiration to put up such a strong fight.
I love your mom very much. When I took her as my wife I knew she would make an excellent mother.
I LOVE YOU! AND I WILL ALWAYS BE THERE.
Dad

Mr. Davis went on a ventilator the next day, and died Monday. He was 28.

Born and raised in Delhi Township, Ohio, he spent his teen-age years in the Campbell Lodge Boys Home in Cold Spring.

While a student at Campbell County High School, he dated two friends of the former Heather Nassano. One of them set him up with her on what would be their first date -- for the school's senior prom.

After they graduated together in 1996, Mr. Davis immediately went into the Navy, which stationed him in Jacksonville, Fla. Nassano went to Murray State University on an art scholarship.

They continued to date, often meeting halfway in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the Chattanooga Choo Choo, where Mr. Davis proposed to her in 1997. They were married in 1999 at St. Joseph's Church in Cold Spring, the same church where his funeral will be.

They lived in Jacksonville for about a year, until the Navy moved Mr. Davis to the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in Norfolk, Va. There, he served as an air traffic controller with Tactical Air Control Squadron 21.

When he wasn't working, he loved to work on his car, a green 1995 Mustang.

While in the Navy, Mr. Davis earned awards that included the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Sharpshooter Pin, Air Warfare Pin and two Good Conduct medals.

He continued to work even as he received chemotherapy treatments. He believed in and supported the Lance Armstrong LiveStrong Foundation, founded by the six-time Tour de France cycling champion who also is a cancer survivor.

Mr. Davis wore his "yellow" wrist band in support of the program.

The Navy insisted on giving him a medical discharge, which he received in December 2003. The family moved to Alexandria, then bought a house in Independence four months ago, which they set up for themselves and their baby.

However heartbreaking, his death also came as something of a relief to his family.

"He went through a lot of hell, " his widow said. "It's better this way."
