Gerald Ross, very giving, very kind

The late Gerald Ross wanted it known that he spent the last years of his life doing the work of the Virgin Mary.

The Crestview Hills resident, who died Wednesday at 75, made two pilgrimages to Medjugorje, in Eastern Europe, in the early 1990s with his wife, Charlotte Heringhaus Ross, who died in 1996.

Since 1981, people have reported apparitions of the mother of Jesus in that small village. It has become a destination for Roman Catholics from around the world.

Those visits prompted Mr. Ross to dedicate his retirement years to doing God's work, said his daughter, Donna Ross, of Crestview Hills. "He always wanted to teach others to be their best and also follow God's Word."

In 1994, a self-appointed visionary said that Mary would appear on the 8th of every month at a 98-acre farm near Falmouth. An estimated 25, 000 people visited the farm on May 8 that year.

Mr. Ross often went to the farm and saw Mary, his daughter said. He ended up buying the farm and turning it over to the Our Lady of Light Foundation in Norwood, an organization he founded and for which he once was president.

In 1995, pilgrims started gathering at the Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center in Norwood, hoping to see a vision of Mary. Mr. Ross served that organization as corporate secretary and spiritual adviser.

Through the Our Lady of Light Foundation, he published 13 books of revelations to himself and to others, his daughter said.

Along with the Jesuit theologian

Father Ed Carter, Mr. Ross founded the Shepherd of Christ Ministries, which distributes a monthly newsletter to 50, 000 priests and lay people in 18 countries.

He was a member of St. Pius X Church in Edgewood, where he met Larry Memering of Edgewood, who became a good friend.

Mr. Ross also devoted himself to the welfare of priests, Memering said. He led a monthly prayer group for priests at the Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center that attracted clergy from throughout the tri-state, Memering said.

"He worked hard to ease their way, " Memering said.

Raised in Brookville, Mr. Ross graduated from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, then earned bachelor's and master's degrees in business at Xavier University.

After serving in the Air Force during the Korean War, Mr. Ross went to work for the General Electric Aircraft Engine Group. When he retired in 1990, he was the European sales manager.

"He was a very giving person, very kind, just a great guy to be with, with a very strong faith, " his daughter said.

Other survivors include a son, Douglas Ross of Cincinnati; daughters, Elizabeth Ross of Hilton Head, S.C., and JoAnn Ross of Augusta; a sister, Irene Muth of Naples, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
