John D. Edwards, kept the golf course green

He kept the golf course green, and its owners green with envy.

So it wasn't surprising that when John D. Edwards retired as a groundskeeper at Kenton County Golf Course, officials there insisted on one thing: that he return on a part-time basis each summer to help keep the course green.

"He was the expert on the water system out there, a spider web of underground pipes, " said Mr. Edwards' son, Randy Edwards of Erlanger.

"The course officials begged him to come back and he was only too glad to oblige because he loved to work there. He couldn't wait for summer so he could get back there."

Mr. Edwards, 77, of Florence, died Monday at his home.

He was a member of Boone-Union Masonic Lodge 304 F&AM.;

In Mr. Edwards' younger days, he enjoyed piloting small airplanes, building boats and water skiing.

"He was a very social person, " said his son. "People were drawn to him. He never tried to be the center of attention, but he was someone that everybody gathered around to share stories and have a good time."
